668.0. "Qs Without Us" by SHALOT::ANDERSON (Give me a U, give me a T...) Thu May 18 1989 23:31

This came up in JOKUR::GRAMMAR, but seemed more appropriate
here ... How many words are there that have q's but not u's
in them? Here's what the SCRABBLE dictionary has:

	o Qoph -- Hebrew letter

	o Qaid -- Muslim leader

o Qintar (qindar) -- Albanian coin

	o Qiviut -- musk-ox wool

I am not making these up.

I'm particularly interested in any words where the u-less q
	is not word-initial. Thanks,

There's "Iraq" but you can't use that in SCRABBLE (tm).

There are many Arabic words that are transliterated with U-less
Qs -- Qatar comes to mind immediately.

Are there any common - or uncommon - English words like this? No.

Here are some "words" with u-less q's (if they would be
acceptable for Scrabble depends on how freely alcohol was
    previously consumed):

Aqaba, Gulf of, but, of course, that can't be used in that game either.

Re .3

>qwerty

First, I'm not sure it's a word. Second, I'm not sure that the double-u
doesn't count as a 'u' plus another 'u'.

Totally random thoughts (from totally random minds)
-----------------------

This topic made me think of a lyric fragment from a parody version of
a song popular in the sixties:

        If an X or a Q, dear,
        Should fall into my hand,
I'd concede the game to you, dear,
        It'd be all over, and

I could search the whole board over
        Until the game is through
But I know I'll never find
        Another U.

Another U.? Is that near Wassamatta U.?

And let's have no shepherd jokes concerning not finding another ewe.

Had to send my dart shirt back 3 times before they finally left

QUANTAS is not allowed as it's an acronym standing for:

Queensland and Northern Territories Aerial Service (I think) but
    as you probably didn't know...

    LUFTHANSA stands for:
