| `Handbook' is my least favourite. I've seen self-styled `handbooks'
that you'd need a fork-lift truck to move.
But that doesn't mean I want to see `reference' adopted in British
English with the meaning `source of reference material'. I'll happily
put the single word `reference' on the cover of a reference manual. But
to me the book will still be a reference manual (to which there may be
references).

You must be alluding to the famous Mexican peon, later a great leader
of organized labor in his country, Manual Trabajo.

| When I am watching golf on the telly I often think that Severiano
Ballesteros should be called Automatic Ballesteros, because of the
way his brother is oft referred to as Manual.

Etymologically, little difference; most English-speaking people
would know that `man-' and `hand' had a lot in common.
But things have come on quite a bit since some monk referred to a
handbook as a `liber manualis' [or whatever the adjective is], and
a `manual' nowadays (a book, that is) strikes me as being potentially
(and probably) weightier. I think that's how Corporate User
Publications see it too.
Re .5
Strange. I'd noticed that about Manual Ballesteros too - hadn't got
as far as thinking of el automtico though.

He assured the customer it would work even if the electricty failed
since it had a manual pedal.
