| Well, I commissioned the following for an Irish colleague who is
leaving:
Go neirigh an bothar leat a <insert name>
It means: May the road rise with you (Irish good luck type greeting),
and was provided by a Deccie in Galway.

| Hmmm. I looked for notes with title "Vale" but none were to be found.
Hadda take poor seconds with "Farewell."
I see from 396.* that Walter Oslansky's leaving us. Our loss! :-( and
best of luck in future incarnations, Walter -- we'll miss you!!!!!
Thanks for all your great notes, and for co-founding the Latin
notesfile too...

| No time for me to compose an adequate encomium to him -- I will try
later, but I want to let the JoyOfLex crowd know, so that they might
add their voices to this one before the plug's pulled on Jim's account
today.
I'll post some of my correspondence with him later, as my own tribute
and for the info of his local friends as to what his plans are.
Hail & Farewell to one of the Great Ones!
Sadly,

202.4 | )-: Well, p=.99, I'm out of here myself... :-( | RDVAX::KALIKOW | Supplely Chained | Thu Jun 10 1993 20:54 | 20 |
| A week or two before my group got the unexpected word we would be
unfunded in FY94, my wife & I committed to a trip to Italy to celebrate
our younger daughter's graduation from Harvard (Mandy, who graduated
_cum laude_ today, will be coming along as her graduation present!).
So I'll be offline soon (hate the caution that decrees "Never Tell The
Public When You'll Be Away From Home!"), and by the time I return
(unless I can get the Powers That Be to delay my conversion to
electronic UnPerson) I may not have access to JoyOfLex while I clean
out my office.
So -- I wanted to bid a fond farewell to the most erudite and amusing
group of people in all of DIGITAL CyberSpace, and to ask whether
there's any internet newsgroup that's anything like "us" here.
Thanks for all the fun and the sharing of the pleasures of language!
Dan Kalikow

Sorry to hear that. If she didn't graduate _cum laude_ then she'd be
eligible for a job under current global industrial standards, and then
she'd have some hope of helping you out for a while....
At least, enjoy Italy and be glad that your wife can accompany you
(not denied a visa) and can accompany you back to the U.S. too (not
denied a visa).
Also too bad you didn't get laid by Digital when the economy was
stronger so that you might get a new job yourself while also getting
a nice fat (earned) severance payment. But what else is new.

Didn't see a smiley-face. Is that what you intended to say? If so,
"screwed" is the correct term.

| There is no typo in .8. And a smiley-face would have been inaccurate.
"Screwed" would have omitted the pun, though there would be no change to
the punishment. Sigh.

202.12 | My own reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated | RDVAX::KALIKOW | Partially sage, & rarely on time | Thu Jul 08 1993 20:14 | 20 |
| 'Twould seem that I was harder to get rid of than I had expected. As
promised, my Manager gave me the package last Tuesday, after my Italian
idyll. However, through lots of initiative -- and a lot of help from
my friends -- I managed to get several leads this week, one of which
just resulted (this PM) in a nifty offer to join IM&T in MSO2.
The fun part (aside from the extremely creative folks with whom I'll be
working) is that I wouldn't have been able to land this job had we not
decided to take our long-planned European vacation with younger
daughter Mandy. As we were flying back last week, the REQ that I
filled today was just getting signed. So _that_ was one for the
books... You just never know.
I'm still saddened by the difficulties facing the Corporation and by
the many colleagues we've lost and will continue to lose :-( but at
least I "live to fight another day." And to try to help.
See you online!

inquiring as to his health. If he responds offline, I'll post a status

his untimely demise or injury were greatly exaggerated. I trust that

However, if Digital had a sales office in Kobe, we can
probably wish farewell to them. I'm told that Internet

| The sister of an ex-colleague here in Valbonne works in Kobe. She
was permitted into her appartment block to collect personal belongings,
and while there she called her brother here to say she was alive and
well, so some phone connections work. Other appartment blocks on the
same street were either unsafe to enter or didn't exist any more.
