Has anyone been or is planning to go soon?

I've thought about going for years and hopefully will make it up this year.
We're thinking about this weekend as a possibility, since most other weekends
are busy through May. We're more interested in the hiking than the skiing, at
least this time.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,
-Jeff

RE: .66

Jeff,

The Tuckerman Ravine trail is closed above the lunch rocks in the
bowl at this time of the year. If your goal is to hike into the
ravine to watch the skiers then this is the time of year. It gets
more dangerous as the days get warmer with avalanches, falling rocks
and ice, as well as man made objects like runaway skis and
snowboards.

There is an active note in the skiing conference(BGSDEV::SKIING)
about Tuckerman's and the conditions there. Look there for current
conditions.

	Roger

I'll be headed up a couple of times in the next month or two, with
next weekend being the first. Reports on the net have been pretty
    good.

It was spectacular on Sunday. The trail was snow covered the entire way, which
made it difficult in the steep sections. Coming down those sections was tricky
(and slushier). Ski poles and waterproof boots would be a great idea, even if
just hiking. I didn't bring poles and my Merrill's are not exactly waterproof,
but the hike was fun nonetheless. I brought 3 pairs of socks and two T-shirts.
Those were good ideas, since all were used. Sunsreen was also essential, altough
I didn't use any on my arms/legs and got a bit of a burn.

Lots of people there, many hiking, lots skiing and riding. There was falling ice
warnings in the ravine and we got to see some ice boulders fall not two minutes
after arriving. There was a loud crack, which sounded like thunder then about 3
boulders fell into the "lunch rocks". I never heard of any injuries, but it was
pretty scary to watch (luckily from a distance).

The hike took about 1.5 hours up to HoJo's, where we hung out for a while
(beautiful views and warm temps). It took a little more than a half hour to get
from there to the ravine. We ended up sitting on one of the rocks at the right
of the entrance. A couple of times I ended up sinking over two feet into the
snow while getting to the rocks, which was a little chilly in shorts.

Once in the bowl, I wished that I had my skis, but not so much that I was sorry
I hadn't just lugged them up for 2 hours. It would've been great to be able to
ski down the ski trail, though. I bet that was easier and drier than hiking down.

I must've taken 30 pictures, but I doubt they will do it justice. The white
snow, blue ice, black rocks, green trees and blue sky make for a 360 degree
postcard.

-Jeff
