Went to SPAG's again today, and they have boxes of CLASSIC
The Minors in a Major League Way for $18. First time I've seen
these, and the price seemed a bit high, so I didn't buy any.
They had quite a few of these, so, if someone can verify that
this is a good buy, please let us know, and maybe I'll buy a box
next time I go there. For those who are not familiar with this
area, SPAG's is in Rte. 9, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, in the good
old U. S. of A.

Yes, that's exactly what they are. I didn't say CLASSIC's Best
because I didn't think it was important.

Scoreboard ALSO provides JC Penney, Jordan Marsh, and the like,
with their autographed memorabilia.
Obviously at near-retail prices, since the retail stores prices
are incrementally worse than ScoreBoard. Either that, or those
retail stores are some might greedy suckers ...

310.6 | Who's behind this Company? | IAMOK::GASPARONI | | Fri Sep 13 1991 13:56 | 12 |
| There must be some heavy hitters behind this Scoreboard company. Does
anyone know who ownes them. A lot of players will only sign for
Scoreboard, like Reggie J., Schmitt, etc., so this place must be well
connected to the players to have the sort of inventory built up to
supply the Cable networks, department stores, etc. I know they are
out of NJ., think Mr. Mint maybe one of the principles behind this
bigger than life company. They have to be big if they own Classic
card co. I also see that Rotmans has a Football set they are putting
out. There another company that is bigger than they appear. It's very
interesting once you start putting the pieces together of these
companies. I also think Rotmans is supplying Spags with some stuff,
which is very likely.

310.7 | More on Scoreboard | CHIPS::CHOY | | Fri Sep 13 1991 14:32 | 18 |
| Have you seen the ESPN special titled "Outside the Lines"? It was
run sometime before the season started and replayed around the All-Star
game. The documentary, which may have won some award, focused on the
autograph game - players being hounded, dealers selling autos, fake
autos, Home shopping club, interviews and the Scoreboard. The cameras
showed one ex-player signing for Scoreboard. It also showed their
inventory of signed bats and a bunch of kids sorting cards. The
owner's name may be Phil Spector (something like the recording honcho)
but I could be wrong.
While Scoreboard's prices are admittedly high, they say they provide
"peace of mind" via authentic, guaranteed, genuine autographs. You
realize the big bucks involved if you saw the video.
BTW, at the end of the video, they showed an autograph hound getting
signatures of some of the Celtics at when they were checking into the
Embasssy Suite by Storrow Drive. I think I've seen discussion
elsewhere in the notesfile of this video and person.

310.9 | More on Autos | CHIPS::CHOY | | Fri Sep 13 1991 15:58 | 24 |
| True, that is the best way. However, not everyone has access to the
players. Not all players may visit a city reasonably close to your
hometown. I imagine that some of the people that buy from HSC, Penneys,
etc. live far from a major city/sports collecting area or don't really
follow sports memorabilia closely and pay for convenience and peace of
mind. Some may also not know about shows or want to deal with the
hassle.
I would rather get it in person if possible. Didn't mean to get off
the topic - this should probably be in the autograph topic. I'm
learning more about autos and the pitfalls. Because I'd like to get some
single-signed balls of players I like. They're easier to display than
card sets.
BTW, beware of 89 Topps team cards signed by Bo Jackson. They look
totally fake. I don't know Bo's signature well, but the dealer that
had them was selling them for $7 or $10. When I asked where he got
them, he said at a private signing session. Yeah, right. The guy flew
to LA to get some Topps cards to sell for $7. I'm sure Bo doesn't sign
for that low. He only seems to sign for guys like Scoreboard. He
hates to sign otherwise, as evidenced by the "No autographs" plaque
on the front of his house. It could've been legit, but watch out for
this stuff.

Here are a few goodies I found today during my travels
(all prices are rounded to the nearest dollar, I don't go for
that xx.98 xx.99 crap. Do you think that 1 or 2 pennies less
is going to make any difference ?. Not unless you buy hundreds
or thousands of units. They're not fooling me.)
At Roman's (Worcester, MA)
--------------------------
91-92 Skybox (just in) $25
91 Upper Deck Football 33
91-92 NBA Hoops 13
91-92 Fleer Basketball 13
Nightmare on Elm st. 25
(factory set with the
Holograms)
Star Trek 25th Anniv. 17
At BJ's (Westboro, MA)
----------------------
91 Pro Set Football 14
(Series II)
And ... FLASH !!! FLASH !!! FLASH !!!
I left the best one for last. This is not a misprint, folks, but
there is a catch. The catch is that there is a limit of one per
customer.
91 Upper Deck Football $ 19 !!!!!! (compare that with the lowest
price you have seen at the
card shows. Fantastic ....)

First, and foremost. The FOR-SALE policy has nothing to do with
the rest of this notesfile. People abused, other people complained,
and I was a'feared sooner or later someone would run to personnel.
Secondly, DEC has a policy against solicitation. If I were an
employee of Rig Rob's Card wholesalers, and continually posted
notes in here that were nothing more than solicitations for business,
then THAT would be a problem.
If I were an employee of Rig Rob's, and I posted a note stating that
you can pre-order from Rig Rob's, the new wild-child exorcism cards,
that would be solicitation, and THAT would be a problem.
Juan is not an employee of BJ's (although, he goes there often enuff,
he should get a constant-visitor discount! 8^), and what he did by
passing along those prices, was inform the people in this notesfile
of some information he came across in his travels.
This is no different than someone in ::CD posting a note saying that
Lechmere's is having a 25% sale off ALL CD's this week. Or someone
in ::AUDIO saying that Radio Snack is having a sale on solder this
week.
There is no ulterior motive here. There is no desire to create profit
utilizing Digital resources, for someone other than Digital. There is
no solicitation here. It is strictly FYI only.
If people are going to be bitter because one or two bad apples spoiled
the FOR-SALE note, they're going to miss out on a lot in this
notesfile. Don't be bitter at the people who try and pass along news
of good deals to their fellow noters. Be bitter at those noters who
bought some at decent prices, and turned around trying to sell it at
an obscene profit level.
I've had more than one response telling me I'm a jerk over this.
I've had people telling me that a FOR-SALE note can't work w/out
prices listed. What can I say? This notesfile is open to ALL DEC
Employees. A few of them chose to spoil it for the rest. Don't
blame me, and don't get an attitude over it. Live with it. Maybe
in the future, we'll give a wide-open FOR-SALE note another go, but
pointing fingers and sniping isn't going to win any points towards
it.

Mr. Moderator,
Would it be considered acceptable to start a note for persons who wish
to be included in any off line mailing lists which might evolve as a
result of the change/enforcement of the FOR SALE note policy?
I would envision that persons could simply enter either their VAXmail
address as replies thereby signifying an invitation to send them any
sales notices .
What do you think?

| Personally, I'm glad if someone who happens across a good price let's me
know about it. It saves me alot of running around and maybe some bucks too!
The rule about no personal businesses is a good one. I remember the days
when there were some people who worked at DEC as a hobby and their real
business was somewhere else, and all they did was advertise in all types
of conferences.
There are a few people in this conference that we all know have side
businesses dealing in memorabilia but no one has gotten out of hand as far as
I've noticed, but, if they do, the moderators would be within their rights to
put a stop to it!
Just My Opinion,

Informing the noting community about cards that are available in
the retail market is an entirely seperate issue from the FOR-SALE
note here in this notesfile.
This notesfile is Digital resources. The system it's on, and the
disk space it's stored on are Digital resources. We as employees
are all Digital resources, and we all agreed to abide by Digital's
policies and procedures when we came to work here.
Abusing the FOR-SALE note is in direct conflict with my interpreation
of DEC's policy against using DEC resources for personal gain. I have
had people complain to me, and I do not wish it to elevate beyond the
complaints coming to me. I do not want this reaching personnel.
In the past, when personnel has been confronted with people complaining
about the content of a notesfile, you know what they've done? They've
shut the notesfile down, and put STRICT restrictions on the re-opening
of it.
I have not outlawed FOR-SALE notes. I have asked that you refrain
from posting your prices. If there is no price listed, I do not have
to try and determine if you are using Digital resources for a profit.
If people contact you OFF-LINE, OUTSIDE OF DIGITAL, then they have NO
leg to stand on should they complain to Personnel.
Why, oh why, do you people find it so difficult to believe that a note
along these lines:
"FOR SALE: Classic Kindgerten Sets. Contact me at
1-408-467-7236 if interested".
Will work? You people don't like the policy, don't use the note, or
try and come up with an alternative solution for me. Don't nitpick
other people's notes, and turn into a bunch of finger-pointing,
back-stabbing babies.

RJK,
RE: .17
WHat I meant here regarding mailing lists was intended for use by
people who are engaged in card sales in major way. They could send out
mailing lists with prices included without abusing the for sale note
policy.
However, per your .20, if they did choose to not price their list of
offerings , it would solve your problem also.
I have no problem abiding by the rules, I just think there are those
among us that would be interested in their offerings and preferably
with prices provided and that this would be a way of doing it.
Regards,
R.M.F.

Juan,
That's because there was NO limit on UD Football boxes on Friday. I
saw more than one dealer there, each carrying several boxes. They sold
out by 1:30pm on Friday.
Just an fyi, I heard from a BJ employee that they limit new items to
one box per customer ON THE FIRST DAY they display them. After that,
there's usually no limit (if there's any left)...

Some fairly intense competition and lack of a large crowd had
some prices plunging at the BG show on saturday. Some examples:
PLunge of the show award: Pacific football which by the end of the
show you could get factory sets for $20, 3 for $50! Wax boxes were
$15, $20 for cellos, but you almost certainly could have gotten it
for less.
Runner up plunge award: Dominos pizza sets: $10! No sooner did I see
one dealer selling them for $15, when the guy down the row has a bunch
for $10.
Fleer Pro Visions basketball 6 card set: $3, 91 star pics set $9.
Fleer cellos: (msp) $48/box, studio at $50/box, wildcard at $50/box.
Courtside basketball set $10, pro set french series I $17/box. Score
football factory sets for $16, skybox $22-$25/box, saw a box of
hoops go for $10 with a accompanying $10 courtside set purchase.

It continues to amaze me the amount of stuff for sale. Not only the

signature, etc., but most seemed satisfied to have gotten the
auto they came for.
- Stadium hockey $95 (early sold out) to $115/box.
- Stadium football $59-$60/box and not moving.
- Upper Deck hockey $30 (early sold out), mass quantities at
$33-$35, moving but not too swiftly.
- ProSet platinum series I and II football and series I hockey $29.
- Rookie sensations $25/set.
No great bargains even though it was a large show with several of the
larger dealers in attendance. Prices stayed up I think because there
was a large crowd there and some were buying, plus the dealers had to
cover a rather steep $110/table cost (evidently it costs quite a bit
to get roger to come out and sign). The promoter of the show the
grinning from ear to ear considering attendence was big at $3 a pop
and he took in 20K-25K minimum in autograph sales, plus $110 each for
80-100 tables.

look for hockey stuff...).
Also had 91 Topps Hockey blister paks...40 cards/pack for $1.29 (the pak had

the exception).

o ProSet FB II - $15/Sunday
o ProSet French Hockey - $16-18
o Upper Deck Hockey - $25-27
o Upper Deck Football - $25
o Pacific FB Hi Numbers - $29/Saturday; $25/Sunday $15/Factory
Lo Numbers - $11/box
o TSC FB - $55-65/box
o TSC HK - $55-70/box
o Bowman Football - $9/box
o Topps Archives - $65/box
o Fleer Rookie Sensations - $14-30
o David Robinson Starting Lineup ("rookie") - Sat/$30-40, Sun/$25-30
o UD Basketball - $44-50
o Donruss DK's - Sat/$2-10; Sun/$4-18
o UD HK AW5, 6, and 7 are out ($2-5)

92 Donruss boxes, you all know they had them before and were

they still had about 1.5 cases left, and even though the sign
says there is a limit of 1 per customer, I saw a card show dealer
there who said: "I'm going to take a chance and see if I get away
with it". He took 2 boxes and went thru the register fine, the
clerk didn't object to him buying 2 boxes, so it looks like the
sign is just to scare people.

- Cheerleader boxes - $30, sets $6-7. (A box obviously must yield
quite a few sets).
- Parkhurst seen. $1.50 pack.

Thomas; $15-18
Justice; $10

UD basketball was $32/box this weekend in southern nh and alot of it
was around, it didn't seem to be moving to well.
TSC football took a jump to $60-$70/box, probably because it is playoff
time. although a dealer also related that the price on "the net" had
jumped up in the last day or two.
Saw several DKs for $4, Thomas for $8 and $10, personally i think this
is way too high for these, but what do i know.
TSC hockey was $75, UD hockey $28-$29, UD high number football
$1.50/pack, pacific plus II (loaded) $1.00/pack, $30/box, $15/set.
Topps 92 baseball was selling well, $24 rack box, forget what the
regular wax boxes were.

o Parkhurst Hockey - $35. One dealer (who had his at $45, was
berating the first dealer to mark his at $35, telling him
it was too low for this early, and if he didn't raise his
price, they'd all have to lower theirs. He didn't raise,
everyone else except him lowered, and no one was buying.
o UD Hi number (Football). $29-32/box. $33-35 for a factory
set (1-700) -- didn't see any factory sets of just the high
numbers, although they're supposed to be produced.
o UD Basketball $35/box, still not much movement in terms of
lowering the price or sales.
o Fleer Ultra FB Update sets - $16.
o SkyBox 1991-92, $15/box.
o Diamond Kings ...
- didn't see any thomas
- Bagwell/Justice - $5-10
- everyone else $1-3
- checklist $2-9 (yes, two to nine dollars, talk about range)
o UD Basketball jumbos (these contain the rookie standout cards
that were supposed to be "only in locker box series"). $3.75
for packs, $65/boxes.
o UD/McDonald's -- $3/pack, $2/hologram. Aren't these available
with an 89 soda? So even if they're not getting them out
the back door, the MOST they're paying for these packs is
89 CANADIEN, right? About the dealers had these.
Some dealers were absolutely refusing to budge on prices, but three
other dealers had big signs up that said "make an offer, i likely
will accept" (or something similar) -- and they were!
I've noticed something else. Whenever you make an offer below what
a dealer has listed lately, you're as likely as not to be told
"that's what I paid for it". It was amazing how often today dealers
paid EXACTLY what I offered. Amazing ... and dealers are paying
such high prices, I should offer to sell my cards to them!

if you went there and found Football, then that's what it was,
because I went there yesterday, and they still had plenty left.

310.105 | Holos at rock bottom prices... | STUDIO::GUTIERREZ | Peace be with you all year round | Mon Feb 03 1992 14:25 | 35 |
|
Break... break... I've got to take a break,
I'm working too hard.
The following news is going to blow away all the dealers that
are charging high $$$$$ for Holograms...
In the SCD, there is a dealer in the West Coast that is selling
all kinds of Holograms at rock bottom prices. Here's an example:
Disney Holos (set of 2) $30/set
Star Trek Holos (H1 thru H4) 15 each
Ninja Turtles (set of 4) 5/set
Arena Holos (1 thru 4) 2 each
T2 (yes, there is one, 15 each
(it's an Arnold Holo, rare)
When I first saw this, I thought about a scam, or about deffective
Holos, but yesterday, at a card show, I was talking to a guy who
already bought them from the same company, and he said they are
is nothing wrong with them.
In case anyone is interested, here is the info
American Liquidations
929 Commercial St.
San Jose, CA 95112
(408) 441-7719
They take Credit cards, and also send C.O.D.'s,
shipping extra via UPS.
I am not connected with the above mentioned company in any way,
and I'm writing this on my break.

Just visited the Rt. 9 Wholesale Clubs.
BJ's is back carrying Topps @ 13.98 + tax/box.
Sam's had the Conlon's cards for either 23.xx or 26.xx/box.
It seems to me that Sam's was more expensive on all their boxes of
cards. Their Topps were 14. 78, their DonRuss was 26.xx compared with
BJ's, where I think I paid 23.xx.
Has anyone else noticed this about Sam's?

Denny

cases) -- $50/box.

I boxes.
Also at the Fisk show this past weekend:
- Pro-Set Platinum Football, series I for $12/box
series II for $13/box (same one's
BJ's is charging $24/box)
- Fleer Ultra FB (black box) - $12/box

These were all from one dealer who had cases of stuff. He's out of

Fleer All-Stars - ranged from $1 for ones listed as 'commons' in latest

Donruss series II $27/box
UD high football sets $13
Williams heroes - $1.50 each, covers were being hawked for a
RIDICULOUS $12 to $18. personally I think $5 shuld be about
the top price for these covers, althoug I admit to forking out
nearly twice that for a nameth cover in a weak moment...
Donruss series I $28/box
Stadium Club football $79-$90/box (this has been going up every

Stadium Hockey - $60/box, $2/pack

Well, I went to BJ's last night and bought a box of U.D. basketball for
$18.95. The limit was 1 per customer per day. To obtain a box you have
to fill out a small slip with your name and id # of the UD basketball,
you must then bring this slip up to the front desk. They then check
through the names of all the people in which bought a box during the
duration of the day. If your name is not allready on this list you may
obtain a box, if by any chance your name "is" on the list and you allready
bought a box they will not sell you another one. A friend of mine wen't to
BJ's today hoping to obtain a box for himself. Today when he arrived they
said they had put them on the shelf with no limit and 1 guy bought them
"ALL".

Yesterday I had an appointment after work and I decided to cut through
Dracut on my way home and I stopped at this litte card place. I went in
and was looking around and I had picked out a few cards then...
I noticed that he had the U.D. Hockey high numbers boxes on the shelf
and I asked him how much he wanted for a box ?
He said "well, those are only for my regular customers, I don't recall
you in here before so I really can't sell them to you"
I dropped the cards I had picked out back on the counter and said he
wouldn't see me in there again either..
Some people amaze me, #1. he shouldn't have had them sitting on the shelf
if they are reserved for specific people. #2 (more importantly) you should
not piss off new customers with stupid responses like his. Some people
really shouldn't be in business... Instead of selling off about $40.
worth of merchandise he sold nothing anf drove away new business.. It's
unfortunate that I notice this gorilla like mentality with many dealers.
Is getting a G.E.D. really that difficult ?

Today I found that competition is yeilding good news around here.
We have just recently had a CostCo open here in nashua, nh and also
recently a Sam's Club just across the river in Hudson, nh. Sam's
opened first and their prices were a few bucks more than CostCo's
for the same stuff. However, today when I went to Sam's they had
changed their prices to all be a few cents under Costco's prices
(this is on stuff like fleer wax, donruss series II, etc.)
Can't wait until the Bj's opens up the road from CostCo and a stone's

2 shows y'day (Radisson in Marlboro, Mass; Musial Show in Sturbridge)
- Pinnacle Hockey is out, in plentitude. Boxes could be found for
$32-38, and dealers were willing to bargain.
No idea yet on the official set size, or if there are definitely
inserts -- can anyone conform? The highest number my BIL got was
#420, and he got NO inserts, so ...
- UD Baseball Jumbos (HR Heroes) -- $48-55/box, $2.75-$3.50/pack.
- UD Baseball $25-30/box
- UD Hockey Jumbos ("E" cards) -- $43-60/box
- Fleer Ultra Baseball -- $65/box -- and it was *flying*. This is
a gorgeous card, much like TSC as others have stated, but the
front design is much better (whereas the backs are weak on both
IMO).
- UD Williams Cover cards - $10-15, sets $20-30. Incredible. And
people are scoffing up the title cards as soon as they hit the
dealers tables!
- Mickey Mantle will be in Norwalk CT in September. If you want
details, send me mail.
- Fleer Basketball updates - $15-17/box, $35-40/cello box. Mutumbo
inserts $3-5/each, Wilkins inserts $2-4/each. Johnson - $3-5,
Mutombo - $3-5, Owens - $3-5. Last year's update sets seem to
be comnig out of hoarding, uh excuse me, I mean hiding, and were
readily available at $13-17 each.

Went to a show in Fitchburg last night.
Talk about ludicrous prices ...
o UD Basketball HI -- $2/pack, $25/hand-collated set (different
dealers).
West cover card -- $20
"You only get one per case. This card's gonna be $30 before you
know it."
I think I'll wait.
West singles - $4
o Two different dealers had the UD HH2 (Williams Holo) -- one wanted
$18, one wanted $20. Puh-lease.
o UD 92 Baseball holograms -- ranging from .15 to $3 (depending upon
the dealer).
o UD HK hi sets -- $15 (saw them this weekend for as low as $12).
o Score "Franchise" Players; $15-25 singles, $75-set.
Amazing ... it never ends ...

Two shows in Warwick RI this weekend; one in West Warwick (small
show - 45 tables), the other a larger show at CCRI in Warwick
(Mike Belisle -- how often do they have this show -- once a month?).
Some prices seen this weekend:
o '92 Score Franchise cards: $15-35 each, $75-150/set (yes, the
prices vary THAT widely).
o '91-92 UD Basketball HI; $50-60/box, $20-25/hand collated set.
Holos (AW7:AW9) selling for $2-3 each (Coleman, Hakeem, Rodman
-- ROY, ?Blocked Shots?, Defensive POY). Now for the bad news:
West Cover Cards -- $20 each. FIRM. 3 different dealers.
West HOB sets -- $50-60!
West singles -- $4 each. FIRM.
o Fleer Baseball Rookie Sensations set; $150
(For those interested, Shaws in Leominster Mass has these cellos
for $1.99 each -- they also have basketball HI cellos for the
same price).
o Fleer Basketball Mutombo/Wilkins inserts; $3-5, and $2-3
respectively.
o Hoops "Gold USA Olympic" Insert card ("CC2" - HI Numbers)
$12-15
o SkyBox "CC1" -- $25+
o Williams cover cards - $15. Sets - $18. Go figure.

Show yesterday in Burlington (Bill Hedin -- 90 tbls -- run approx.
1/month -- pretty good show).
Yesterday was one of those days that makes it worth haunting all the
gyms and dingy motels. Lots of stuff found for my collection, and
dealers very willing to haggle on the price. Good deals found, etc.
Some of the notables:
o UD/BK HI/Wax - $32-34/box
HI/Lockers - $8-10/box
RSensations $1 (no names) to $6.50 (Billy Owens). At
those prices, buy the locker boxes.
Despite Brill's contentions, I didn't see ANY basketball header
cards y'day. And I've seen a lot more (relatively speaking)
of cards 1-9 than I have of the header.
o UD/BB
Williams Cover Cards - $9-15
Only saw on HOB/Special Card -- Brock $20
These started out around $25-30 each last year too, and now can
be found (although not easily) for $15 each, $45-50/set. So
don't buy in at these high early prices.
Williams (HH2) hologram - $7-20.
o Original "6" Hockey cards - $19/set, $20/box. With some luck
or buying a few commons, 3 sets is not unreasonable to build
from one box, so ...
o 1991-92 Score Hockey "HOT" cards -- $20/set.
o 1992 Classic 4-Sport LP8 (Rocket/Hockey). One dealer had it
for $15, and sold it to my BIL for $12, and the other had it
for $20 and wouldn't budge.
o Babe Ruth promo "hologram" - $25. Nice hologram, but $$$$
o Fleer Ultra Boxes - $75-85, nice set, but ????
o Fleer BK inserts; Mutombo - $3-5, Wilkins - $1-2.

Some stuff that was out and about this weekend ...
- Upper Deck Basketball factory sets -- $33-35
(ed: Personally I think this set is much more worth the money
than the FB set. Johnson, Mutombo, Steve Smith, Billy
Owens, John Starks, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony are just
a few of the rookies in this set -- both in their "draft
day poses" and in action, whereas the FB set doesn't appear
to have anyone ready to carry the set)
- Upper Deck Hi-Number Jumbo BK Boxes $50-55
(Ed: Thought this was a little low for the first time sighting,
but trust me, I'm not complaining! 8^)
- Upper Deck Lo-Number Jumbo BK Boxes $49-53
- Upper Deck Locker Boxes; Lo: $9-12 Hi: $10-13
- West Singles -- $10 (bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)
- Harley Factory sets - $35-45 Hand-collated: $22-35

Suprisingly enough at Toys R Us, a decent price:
UD High number locker boxes - $9.99
They also had UD high number basketball packs although I'm not sure
what the price was. At the TRU here in nashua they keep the lockers
behind the customer service desk, you have to ask for them. They do
this to limit the number to any one customer, I picked up one locker
each for Dennis and I, the woman working the counter said the limit
was 5. She also said that they were expecting more Fleer Ultra
(although they weren't expecting it to last very long, even if limited

|
I have cross-posted this in the COMICS notesfile.
The Marvel Series III cards are out. And....Marvel has done
it again. Marketing...marketing....marketing.
For those of you buying boxes...don't expect to get even one
full set out the box. I got 3 boxes. The first box was missing
26 cards of making a full set. The second box was missing 7
cards from making a full set. I was able to use extras from
set 1 to fill in 6 of the 7. From set 2, I was able to fill in
8 missing in set 1. At this point, I'm missing 1 from set 2 and
18 from set 1.
The third box yielded a set short 12 cards. But...I was able to
fill in from sets 1 & 2 extras to complete it. I was also able
to finish set 2 with the one card from set 3. Yet...set 1 is
still short 6 cards after filling in from set 3.
The ones that seem real hard to get and fill in are the 150's.
Any or all of these cards are hard to get and don't expect extras
of these.
As for the holograms...I got one Wolverine, 2 Hulk, 2 Venom,
3 Ghost Rider, and 4 Thing. The Wolverine is blue, the Hulk is
green, the Venom is silver, the Ghost Rider is pink, and the
Thing is orange. And the holograms are not as good as before,
except for the Venom, which is the same old silver and shows up
well. Good average of 4 per box.
Looks like I'll either have to buy another box or start picking
individual packs of cards to finish the third set. My son gets
one of these sets, I get one of these sets and the third gets
put away for future sale. I have done this with previous sets.
Marvel is sure gonna get alot of people's money on this one...even
to get just one set. And at $27-$30 a box...this is the most
expensive set of cards out to date. At least one gets one full
set and usually two sets in the Batman Stadium box for the big
bucks. Heavy sigh...oh...well.

Show today in bedford, nh:
Leaf series I boxes - $50, sets were $33 from one guy and $60 from
another! The same guy with the $60 sets wanted incredible prices
for his Gold Edition cards, like $10 for Ryan, $15 for plantier,
most folks were laughing in his face. His only comment was "show
me the book and I'll adjust my prices".
92 Fleer football - $24/box, no one had broken any so I saw no inserts
for sale.
92 Fleer Ultra - $62-$70/box, one guy had sets for $29, others as high
as $45. Alot of dealers had various award winners, but most were
asking too much for them, watch these drop once series II comes out
and people start chases those inserts instead.
West covers were pretty much $25, but more than a few had them, full
West hero sets were $55+. Still too high IMHO. It's interesting that
after 9-12 months all of the sudden tons of the various heroes sets
show up on the market (and the price drops). So I'm waiting and
waiting on the Wests and I hope they will do the same. I fully
expect American Liquidators to have the sets with cover a year from
now for $30 or less.
Pinnacle was $50/box, keep it.

BJ's in Nashua is open for their preview member's day today, grand
opening is officially tomorrow. They had Pinnacle for $46.99 and
Parkhurst 2 for $29.99, one box limit during their grand opening.
(and no 5% sales tax, thank you ;-)
The woman at the desk told me they would only limit to one box
for the first day of certain cards, then throw it open, but in all
cases you have to fill out pick-up slips to get the cards.
They weren't doing anything to write down your number so it would
seem you could probably go back again the same day, is $29 a good
price for Parkhurst 2?

BJ's (Westboro, MA) is selling Leaf Gold 92 Baseball Series I
boxes for $38, there is a limit of 1 per person, but they're
on the shelf, so you know what that means.
They also have 92 Fleer Football boxes for $25, no limit.
Some might call the above combo:
The good and the bad, or...
The Beauty and the Beast.

- At a show this weekend:
- Pinnacle Baseball; $49-55/box
"B" Cards -- $35-50 (and there seems to be a lot more of these
than the Hockey ones)
- Fleer Ultra II hand-collated sets; $45
Couldn't find boxes or insert cards
The "corrected" Ripken now seems to be out in abundance and
most dealers are charging the same price as the error card.
- Upper Deck Hockey; $20/24 (lo/hi). No factory sets yet -- I
don't think they're going to be out.
- 90-91 UD Hockey factory updates; $25 (that is not a type-o).
- Stadium Club Batman; $30-45/box
- Met a dealer who told me she's buying up every "B" card she
can at every show she works -- before the doors are opened.
You don't want to know what she's charging. Ay carumba.
- USA Basketball Sets; $20-25
- Fleer Football Sets (hand-collated) $25
RIP-en inserts - $3 (and scarce interest)
Cello Boxes $60, Wax Boxes $27
- Olivia Prism Sets; $60 (or $12 for singles)

310.201 | Directions | CARTUN::PAVLOCK | | Wed Jul 08 1992 16:42 | 22 |
| Directions to A/B Cards:
From Route 2 and Route 27:
South on Rt. 27 (towards Maynard). First set of lights (Rt. 111)
turn right. Less than a mile you'll see the village of W. Acton as
you come up a hill. There will be a building on your right that
looks like an old, reconverted church. At that corner (Spruce St.)
turn right. Mobil gas station is on your left. A/B Cards is less
than 50 yards on your right.
From Maynard:
North on Route 27 to Route 111. Turn left and follow instructions
above.
Call first (508-264-9980) and make sure they are still there at that price.
That price seemed low to me given this early in the release of that product.

- Pacific FB is out ... 75 a pack, $20 a box. Same design as last
year (backs are different), but they've got UD-insert-mania;
- A 9-card Steve Largent "Legends of the Game" insert set (what?
no title card from the ud-wanna-be?). According to Mike Cramer
of PT, you'll find 3-5 SL cards per box.
- An 8-card checklist insert set. Not numbered as part of the
330 card first series, but numbered "checklist 1 of 8, 2 of 8".
- An 25 card "Pacific Picks The Pros" set; gold in wax boxes
and silver in cello.
- A 30 card "Team Leaders" insert set (28 teams, 1 card for
AFC and NFC rushing leaders).
- The first series is 330 cards, the final 10 (321-330) being
assorted rookies from this year's draft.
- Everyone's busting Leaf for the gold cards and rookie cards.
Complete sets of the first series were available for $20. Boxes
were fairly cheap and plentiful too, around $40-45.
- Ditto Pinnacle. Sets are cheap, boxes are around $45-50.
- Fleer Ultra II was around $45/set, $60-65/box, and lots of dealers
had it.
- Mad complete sets (Lime Rock, hand-collated) $6!

Oh yeah, about the UD All-Star Heroes set.
A couple of dealers had this set this weekend, but wouldn't quote me
a price on a complete set. They had busted up sets and were selling
the singles for between $1 and $8-10 (Ripken, Williams, KG Jr., etc)
-- multiply that by 50 cards in the set, and you get an idea why I
think HSC's price for $14.75 was decent, if not really good.
Might be worth watching the HSC tonight ...

Sorry. My mistake. It's the one where "Brian" hosts the show.
I believe they call it their "play ball" special. They rarely have
guests on the show.
Whereas QVC has a lot of autograph guests, and is hosted by that
little squat guy who wears all the jewelry. (Side note: Whitey
was on a couple of weeks ago, and the host was talking about his
adventures at Yankees Fantasy Camp [Mickey/Whitey's actually],
and he stated that Whitey was nice enough to lend him one of his
uniforms. Whitey blurted out quickly "you didn't fit into one of
my uniforms!".)

the Fleer regular set All-Star sets were better looking than these.

CostCo in Nashua, nh has Topps Baseball factory sets for $22.99, you

If anyone is interested in either or SkyBox USA Basketball for $39

plenty of), let me know and I'd be glad to pick it up for you. Only
stipulation is you must arrange prompt pickup from me somewhere

| Anybody watch HSC last night??
Just flipping through the channels, HSC advertised for complete '89 - 90
Topps Hockey insert sets (21 or 22 cards) for $4.50 plus $2.79 shipping
and handling. I thought this was a pretty good deal so I called in.
Using Tootie, the system said they were now taking orders for the
'90-'91 Topps Hockey 22 card set. I then looked closer at the cards
on the screen and agreed, they were the leaders from '89-'90 so they
had to be '90-'91 cards. Ordered three sets so the shipping and
handling went down to about $1.75 per set.
This wasn't their regular card show with Brian and the other one
yapping what a great deal this was, just some summer bargathon...

Show today in bedford, nh
UD high baseball $29/box (not a great price but it was selling well)
Fleer Ultra Series 1 $80-85/box, series 2 $59/box (could be had for
a little less)
Fleer football Rypiens $1.50, team leaders $1.50, sensations beckett
high for the most part.
If rippin' packs and making sets onself weren't half the fun, you
can really save money letting other people do it. Hand collated sets
just don't move well at shows (or stores). When there are inserts
involved to boot, the set prices really get cheap, best examples
I saw today:
fleer ultra series 1 $20! Pinnacle series 1 $15! Ultra series 2 $25
or 2 sets for $45.
Leaf series 1 $15/set, $38/box. Leaf series 2 $20/set, $45/box.
Gold Leaf series 2 rookies $2-2.50/each. Gold edition thomas $15,
gold edition griffey $10 (no thanks). Good crowd there but many
dealers still suffering as most people weren't spending much money,
some decent bargains for the hard driving shopper.

No Ultra II at the Nashua BJ's, not sure what happened to it, maybe
an inside trade or something :-(
They do have Pinnacle 2 for $46.99, Score basaball factory sets
for $30.99 (i think that was the price). They had a small amount
of Leaf Series 2 left yesterday, $37.99/box.
Sam's in Hudson has wild card 1992 NFL football, around $31/box.
Also Pacific Football for $13 and change.
Costco's supply of ultra 2 was apparently snatched mostly by one
card store owner, who reportedly plunked down over $9,000 to walk
out with most all of the skid. He left around one case that was
gone by tuesday morning at around 11. Thanks Steve H for posting
the info tuesday morning, I had checked there monday but missed it
since I went in the morning and they put it out in the afternoon.
I did manage to get the last 3 boxes and only got those because I
was poking around looking for some and noticed these 3 someone had
tried to hide behind the marvel cards. I can't believe that this late
after series 2 has been out for quite a while, that a dealer would
really sink $9,000+ into it, probably to make $5/box. Does anyone know
a card store owner/dealer by the last name of McGlaughlin?

| Went to the '67 Red Sox Reunion Show tonight. Didn't stay long though
since it must've been 100 degrees inside. Anyway, there were some de-
cent bargains:
1992 TSC III 1st Draft Picks Insert Set 30$ for all 3 cards
1992 Upper Deck Heroes Highlights for 50$ (Roy couldn't get to the
table fast enough when I told him this)
1992 Fleer Basketball 24 Card Insert All-Star set 25$
1992 McDonalds Canadian MVP set (33 cards) 7$
1991 Upper Deck West Heroes set for 25$ with cover
Payton Heroes cards were 4$ or more. The Pro Bowl cards were 15$ or
more and one guy wanted 50$ !!! for the checklist card.
Seemed like a lot of the dealers there were from the Sturbridge shows.
Score represenatives were there and they had a display of cards called
"Select". I asked the rep about them and he said they're coming out in
December, 330 card set priced between regular Score and Pinnacle. I
asked him "only one series right ?". He laughed and said it was only
one series.

That's pretty unusual. Costco doesn't usually get drained so quickly.

Stadium Club Basketball Series II was going for 80$ and there was
lots of it. Topps Series II Basketball was going for 30$. I picked
up a series II set for 8$. 1993 Pinnacle Baseball was going for 50$
and there was a lot of that also. 1992 Stadium Dome Sets (Jack Mur-
phy Stadium) were going for 37$. Upper Deck High # Hockey was going
for 45$ a box. Not many dealers had them. These boxes also include
low #'s and the packs that Steve Hayes opened seemed to have 6 high
number cards per pack. The Gordie Howe Hockey Heroes are pretty
nice though.
I picked up a box of Pro Set Football 1992 Series I for 6$. There
were also some other wax box blowout prices. I also picked up 250
of those hard plastic top loaders for 10$. They usually come in the
packs of 25 for 2-3$.
Overall the show wasn't too bad, but not as good as Wilmington or
BG. Plus they didn't let anyone in until 5:25 so I froze my wax
packs off standing in line over an hour. People were getting pretty
upset about the show not opening on time.

Take this with a grain of salt because when they first opened they
told everyone they would never get any of the so called "limited"

proceeded to get all of these. Now apparently they won't get

| I witnessed dealers at their worst Friday. I stopped at Costco.
Dealers were coming out with cases of UpperDeck Series II Basketball.
One dealer I saw had 10 cases. Many had 4-6 cases each. Their were
dealers yelling at each other. Some had asked Costco to refund their
membership fee because they didn't get any of them. It was a zoo.
The manager again was saying he wasn't going to deal in cards anymore.
I did get a dealer to sell me 2 boxes for $40 each (heck he paid
$29.99, he made a quick $20). One dealer then asked the same guy if he
could buy the rest for $60 each box. The second dealer was quite upset
that I was able to get the 2 for such a "steal". The dealer I bought
from got in his car and drove away.
Oh well. I got 7 or 8 All-Rookie cards including a Shaq. I also got a
Bird header and 7 other Birds. I got 3 of each series II Shaq and
4 #1 Shaqs. Wish I could see the second dealer and tell him what I
got.
Unbelievable! Glad I witnessed it. It really opened my eyes to the
lower side of dealers.
