622.0. "The number of calories needed for maintenance?" by CSS::BENZ () Mon Nov 19 1990 15:29

I believe there's some kind of calculation which tells
you how many calories you need to maintain a given weight -
and I've forgotton how it goes..

    Does anyone know?

    Thanks in advance -

10 times your desired weight if you are inactive, 12 x your desired weight
    if you do a lot of exercise. i.e., 10 x 140 = 1400 cal. per day.

That's for women, right? Isn't it more for men?

Their is at least one other variable that needs to be incorporated into
your formula. Men (in general) have a greater percentage of muscle (in
relation to body composition and otherwise) then woman. It takes more
calories to support this extra lean muscle tissue, therefore a man
(generally) needs to consume more calories to support the same amount
of body weight (compared to a woman).
