348.0. "Desperate for Help!" by FSTVAX::CARLSON (I didn't quit I surrendered DTN 249-4306) Fri Aug 19 1988 12:14

I have a story not unlike many of you. I have tried every diet
known to man, with either no results or results lasting in short
time periods. I have been overweight my entire life, I mean
my entrie life starting at birth at 14 pounds. Just once, just
once in my life I want to know what it is like to be at "goal"
weight, (my goal, not what insurance adjuster deem acceptable).
    	I can't do it!

I have now decided it is time to investigate stronger measures
than fad diets, ect. I need information on where in the greater
New England area is the best place to go for medical help.
I am looking for a hospital or medical group who specializes
in weight disorders, and offers surgical or medical help.

Please don't try to encourge me with Weight Watchers, Diet Clinic,
Overeaters Anonymous, success stories, believe me I've been
there. I have spent thousands of dollars, hours, and tears
trying. I now need experts in the medical field to help, and
I want to know where to find them. I have reach the end of
my rope. CAN ANY ONE HELP ME!!!!

Please don't hesitate to send mail if you have information
regarding my request and don't want to share it with the notes
        file in general.   FSTVAX::CARLSON

    	Thanks in advance

I know I get information from Emerson Hospital - it gets sent to
my home in Merrimack NH. There are programs they have regarding
weightloss. My suggestion is to call the hospitals in your area
and ask about their weightloss programs. Make sure you state up
front that you are not interested in WW, OA etc.

Also, have you talked to your doctor about going on a medically-
    supervised weightloss program?

I don't know of any programs in your area, but wanted to let you
know that my duaghter's first daycare mom had gastric bypass last
year and is THRILLED with the results! Her mom also had one.

I think we get pretty hung up on how we SHOULD do this weight
loss stuff, like it has to be something "normal", not surgical
or medical. Bull, do what is going to work for YOU!

Let us know what you decide and keep us posted about the results!!

348.3Medical supervision!BPOV02::ALANGO RED SOXWed Sep 07 1988 12:0711
Recently my Cousin-in-Law went through a supervised program at Rhode
Island hospital. I don't know the details of the program but I do
know that he lost 140 lbs. in just a few months without surgery
of any kind. He also felt good throughout the program. I think it
would make sense for you to investigate medically supervised programs.
It can only benefit you to be supervised properly. He (C-I-L) looks
tremendous and feels great. He apparently has learned to eat
"correctly" which is important for the long term. Why don't you
call the hospitals in your area and see what they have to offer.
You've got nothing to lose (but lbs.)! Good luck!!

Recently my neighbore went to the ST. Joseph Hospital Annex here
in Merrimack for the weight loss program. It is monitored by nurses
and doctors. Then do blood work, EKG, etc. You literally don't
eat any food, your cost includes packets you delute with water that's
all you eat until you hit your goal. Then they start you back on
food slowly, you can substitute meals with the packet as long as
    you want.

He lost 75 lbs (in six weeks) his sister inlaw lost 120lbs (in 4
months) I believe the cost was $1,000. The only problem with these
diets like any other is what you do after. Lossing the wait is
a lot easier than keeping it off. I know up until 18 yrs ago I
never had to diet, and now my life is one big diet.

let us know how you make out
