323.0. "Liquid ounces vs. dry ounces" by MSDOA1::MCMULLIN () Wed Jul 13 1988 13:26

    I'm a little confused about ounces as far as dry and liquid are
    concerned.  Are dry ounces the same as liquid ounces?  The reason
    this has even entered my mind is because I've got this glass (about
    the same size as a McDonald's Super Size cup) that I've been drinking
    my water out of.  One day I decided to measure (with a measuring
    cup) to see how many ounces this cup holds.  I couldn't quite get
    four 8 oz. cups of water into my glass.  Therefore, I assumed this
    glass probably holds about 24 oz (can't fill it to the rim or I
    can't carry it back to my desk) but I noticed today while I was
    washing it that it says 32 oz. on the bottom.  I've also wondered
    if maybe it holds 32 oz. if filled to the rim and they were able
    to sell it as "A Full 32 oz. soft drink!!"  Any comments??

	8 liquid ounces is one cup of liquid. It's a volume measurement, not a weight measurement. This kind of thing confuses me all the time too. Susan

	Just to add more confusion to the issue: A gallon of fresh water weighs close to 8 lbs., therefore 1 qt weighs 2 lbs 1 pt weighs 1 lb = 16 oz 1cup weighs 8 oz 1 oz weighs 1 oz see it all works out the same... Where the rub comes is that this equation only works for FRESH WATER. Al

	For my two cents worth - You shouldn't even try to equate the two!! Weight differs due to density ie, oil is more dense than water therefore it weighs more (same could be said for rock). There is no easy way that I know of to equate the two. So if it calls for XX ounces of "dry" whatever - weight it, "liquid" whatever - measure it in a measuring cup.
