307.1 | my solution | ARGUS::CORWIN | I don't care if I AM a lemming | Wed Jun 15 1988 15:17 | 12 |
| re .0:
I have a similar problem in that I tend to "pick, pick, pick" all the time,
time, time if something is in front of me.
The solution I've been following all along is to make just what we are going
to eat. I pre-package our meats and thaw just what we need for dinner that
night, and make a pkg of veggies (or salad or both) and it doesn't matter
how much I eat of those.

Try stocking lots of low calorie ready-to-eat vegetables in
the house. Things like carrots, peppers, pickles (unsweetened),
and celery.
Then hit them first when the hunger starts. It may not taset
as good, but it may be enough for you to make it sleep w/o a binge.

307.3 | " Does he cook??" | TFH::LAPOINTE | | Thu Jun 16 1988 07:11 | 11 |

My SO cooks the meals that I know I will have trouble with.
He cooks it, serves it, and cleans up. It makes it easier to have
just what is put in front of me. He also puts the leftover in single
serving container and put them in the freezer. I can't even go
to the the frig and pick later. It works and I get out of all that
work as well....It's nice to be waited on from time to time.

307.4 | Another nighttime eater checking in | STAR::YANKOWSKAS | Strawberry cheesecake forever | Thu Jun 16 1988 07:34 | 14 |
| It may be helpful to try and adapt your weightloss program to your
lifestyle, rather than the other way around. If one is a nighttime
nibbler (as I also am), trying to force one's self into a regimen
of eating just three meals and no snacks isn't going to work.
On nights where I know I'm going to be home watching a ballgame or
something on TV, I'll plan my meals accordingly so I can have something
like a bowl of popcorn, some fruit, or some veggies (with low-cal
dressing as a "dip") while watching TV and still stay within program.
Seems to help me....

307.5 | thanx | MSDOA1::MCMULLIN | | Mon Jun 20 1988 11:56 | 17 |
| Thanks for all the suggestions!!! Sorry I took so long to respond,
but Q4 has been a killer!!! I'll probably be in read only mode
for a while!
re .3
What does SO stand for?? Unfortunately, the only thing my husband
can cook is pre-packaged stuff.
re .4
I'm not a nibbler; I just can't seem to take only the portion I'm
suppose to have and leave the rest of it alone. That's one of the
reason's I'm approx. 20 lbs overweight :-(

307.6 | SO = Significant Other | HPSCAD::WHITMAN | Acid rain burns my BASS | Tue Jun 21 1988 05:17 | 8 |
| re -.1
SO stands for Significant Other. It's a generic term for husband,wife
girl friend or boy friend...whoever/whatever is that special person in your
life....

307.7 | Much clearer, now!!! ;-) | MSDOA1::MCMULLIN | | Tue Jun 21 1988 08:18 | 5 |
| Al,
Thank you so much for clearing that up for me. I knew it had to
be something to that effect, but I wasn't sure what it was!!!

| This is my problem too!
Think Mike's suggestion in .2 will help. It may be pure imagination,
but raw carrots actually taste _sweet_ to me if I'm hungry enough!
(Is this why Americans seem so fond of carrot cake, I wonder?)

307.9 | The glycemic index and carrots. | 16BITS::AITEL | Every little breeze.... | Tue Jul 26 1988 17:13 | 18 |
| Brian, it's not your imagination. Carrots are fairly high on the
glycemic index - somewhere around 70. As a comparison, glucose
is the standard at 100, apples are around 40. The glycemic index
measures how fast something gets turned into glucose and burned
(at least that's my layman's recollection of the article I read
on it). Things like brown rice and whole wheat flour are lower
on the index than their processed white counterparts. If you're
hypoglycemic, your diet will be composed of things low on the
index, for health reasons. If you're not, you'll find that the
things lower on the index will keep you fuller for a longer time,
and the things higher up will provide quick energy but won't last.
As far as dieting goes, if you need a quick boost, carrots will
do it. If you want something to fill you up, try an apple or a
slice of wheat bread or some brown rice.

307.10 | Brush away the flavor... | EGYPT::SMITH | | Fri Sep 30 1988 17:58 | 6 |
| Try brushing your teeth when you want to avoid eating anything else
during the evening. I can't guarantee it will work, but it often
helps! It removes any food-taste that's still there AND it makes
you think twice -- unless you just love brushing your teeth again
before bed!

307.11 | Get away from it | COOKIE::WILCOX | Database Systems Engineering/West | Fri Sep 30 1988 18:28 | 8 |
| Something I've found helpful is to get out of the house and walk
a couple miles RIGHT after dinner. I usually put my 13.5 month old
in a backpack to carry, so the other thing I get out of this is
I'm putting on the amount of weight I've lost. I take my cup of
coffee with me.
Anyway, getting away from it immediately is a great help to me.
