| For a while I got messages on my answering machine from a bunch of
teenaged girls. It was sometimes hard to understand what they were
saying with all of the giggling. They stopped leaving messages after I
turned them in for charging all of their calls from the beach to my
number.

| How could they charge the calls to your number unless you accepted a
collect call, or they had a calling card number? Or DID they have a
calling card number?
I have never received an obcense phone call from a woman, nor from a
man either.

| Up until a few years ago, all you had to do to charge calls to someone
else's phone was dial 0+the number and say "please bill to nnn nnn-nnnn".
Sometimes the operator would check, but not always.

| Hey Alfred, I think she's called every phone in our lab. A couple of
other guys had the same experience as you this week. Was this by any
chance an introduction to a 1-900 service? I've heard sometimes the
1-900 services market themselves with computer dialers; when someone
answers, the caller says, "Look, we're here if you need us, but here's
a sample for free 'cause you've got such a nice voice and I bet you're
handsome and..."
Back in the old days when I played bass for a living and was far less
ugly, I got one of "those" calls from a female fan from the now-
defunct Dixie's in Franklin, Mass. I never found out who she was.
Something just occurred to me... suppose we could have a dollar charged
to a caller's phone bill every time he/she rang us up, except for
predetermined numbers? Probably wipe out the entire telemarketing
industry, and we all could enjoy our evening dinners uninterrupted.

What was their general experiance? How'd they react? I'm not surprised.
Most of the 894 numbers wind up in NIO and if she was calling from
Salem at random I'd expect her to get quite a few numbers here.

sounded like a teen girl....she kept saying her name was such and such,
and left a number, saying she wanted me and some other miscellaneous
ramblings. I had no idea who she was, but I once called the number she
gave and someone answered. I think what was going on was that this girl
who was calling me had something against someone and was using her name
to protect her own identity as she made these calls to me. I never
really found out, but it was different, hearing the messages she left.
Now where did I leave those tapes...

What the heck, at least these calls are better than the ones from that
company that makes the stuff you dump into your septic tank.

| I've never received such a call (RATS) but I do have a woman friend
that received an obscene telephone call from another woman. She said
that the one thing that took her by surprise was that the caller called
her by name and seemed to know some personal things about her. My
friend admitted that she was facinated by the call and even talked
to the person for quite some time. Whoever called her never tried
to get in touch with her after the initial call and she would love
to know if it was someone she knows.

| A woman left a prank call on my answering machine. She rather breathlessly
thanked me for last night and said, "I hope you didn't tell [my wife's name]."
No great mystery, our phone book listing has both our names.

| I got one of those calls ... many years ago (very early '60's)
Turned out I knew the gal who called... she was in financial trouble
and was looking for a few bucks.
She was "well known" around the Navy base I was stationed at. It was
sort of pathetic.

i never do get an obscene phone call from a woman .
i wonder how i'll react if this happend.
i suspect i'll hang up right away like a good boy should do and
report it to the authorities right away.

| on this subject, i once saw in tv this program (a tapploid one) where
they interviewd this dude who said he worked in these 1-900 calls
sex hot lines, and he pretended he was a woman with his voice and
he like was charging those poor men 4.99 a minute for them to talk
to her (he) .
i wonder how the men who called would feel if they knew they were
talking dirty laundry with a man not a woman all this time . they'll
probably ask for a refund but i doudt very much they'll get it.
