| I think sexy things get us all confuddled because they override our
outer circuits, our hardwiring, our logic, our rational thought, and
our common sense by heading right into our soft spots. And "sexy"
things vary from person to person and aren't always rational. That's
kind of why "sexy" things give us weak spots - we can't defend them -
we can't explain them - they're sexy because...well....because we think
they're sexy. We just respond. In fact, it's sometimes uncomfortable
because we can't HELP but respond.
Yikes! We're human!

| > But what do we mean by sexy.
We mean tending to arouse prurient interest.
> Why are sexy "things" sexy.
They are sexy because they evoke a sexual response. They cause a
semivoluntary sexual response ranging from perked up interest to out
and out arousal/sexual tension.
> WHY do sexy things get us all confuddled?
Well, sex is hardwired into our brains since it is necessary to the
survival of the species. We are subject to hormones etc which are able
to affect our feelings and behaviors. There are many times when our
sexual instincts tell us to do things which we know are not culturally,
socially, or morally acceptable. When we arrive at a situation where
our body tells us to do one thing but our mind tells us to do something
else, we are confused, frustrated, "confuddled."
Fighting instinctual feelings is a major cause of stress. We may meet
someone who we'd love to get into bed, but we know we cannot (for
whatever reason). Such a situation causes unresolved feelings- which
can be unhealthy when not properly addressed.
A key aspect of sexiness is that it is completely subjective. This is
helpful for propagation of the species. (It also helps keep those of us
who are imperfect from being alone our whole lives. :-) :-)

If I knew what prurient meant I'm sure I would agree.
Let's put it this way.
Why is the picture of Marilyn Monroe's white dress billowing around
her waist, in one of her films, so popular. Some men I know say

Why are strippers so popular, all they are doing is undressing!

something that I feel uncomfortable about, then if I explore it further I might
be able to resolve or change. Yes, I might look foolish to some along the way
(even in the end), but I'm willing to take the risk, and it might even help to
have reactions rather than none.
This month I noticed the Spiegel Catalogue had arrived and my wife hadn't yet
gotten to it. I figured I'd take a look, just to see if there was anything
interesting. It seems to be all women's clothing, but I was in for a surprise.
At least once ever 3 pages or so, there is a women posing with a steamy gaze,
or with her blouse buttons open or with her hand against her inner thigh. I
was rather surprised that it went as far as it did. I think these women are
being sexy, or maybe suggestive.
I find breathy voices sexy. Also women who stare up at the camera (panting,
with rosy cheeks) during the TV aerobic workout shows.

Well, for one thing, sexuality is mostly hinted at therein. While it
might be titillating to look at sexually explicit photographs for a
while, (I'm talking the ones with gynecological candor) seeing it all
laid out quickly becomes boring as it eliminates the need for
imagination. What is better is provocative enticements rather than
clinical explicitness.
re: .8
> -< what do men really want? >-
Yikes! That could be a very long subject in itself!!! :-)
>Why some things and not others?
Each of us is stimulated by a different subset of stimuli. Some of us
can be stimulated by all 5 senses, others only by one or two of them.
Another thing to remember is that not only are different people
stimulated by different things, but the same people are stimulated by
different things at different times, and the same people are stimulated
to different degrees by the same things at different times. It all goes
back to a stimulus that triggers a release of hormones. These stimuli
change in each person on both short and long term cycles.

I like women with French accents, I don't know why. When I 'phone

Women with big brown eyes are another weakness. If I ever manager

with their own sensuality, and unafraid of expressing it. They are
comfortable within themselves, as people. Pictures or images that
reflect that are sexy to me. There has to be a quality of a real,
spirited person there, a presence of some kind. The quality of
warmth is important, as well. (or of heat?%^)
By the way, I've met pretty women who seemed very unsexy, or sexless,

pretty who had a very sexy quality about them. It really is about

I watch my wife undress and it's great, but am I interpreting the

is, intimation, either deliberately(strippers) or not (well dressed ladies)
that something more enjoyable will follow.
It would explain why nudist camps don't illicit sexual responses,
everybody knows that nothing sexual will happen.
Would this theory work for ladies, I wonder? Is all we men have

| I think sexy is ..... sensually perceived potential.
Not only do you perceive (see, hear, whatever) something, but you link
that something to its potential to bring you more.
The curve of a person's back......invites touch
The purr of a person's voice......makes you wonder what it
would sound like if.....
The movement of a breathing chest makes you wonder what it
would look like if.....
The flash of fire in the eyes makes you wonder what's going
on in their mind......
Sexy things sometimes seem "naughty" - fishnets, spiked heels, bright
red lingerie, an open invitation, the slow - seductive - removal of
every single piece of clothing - the motion of dancing that's lead with
the hips and shoulders......and "naughty" things are enticing in and of
themselves, and people who tend to do "naughty" things may want to do
more "naughty" things (of course, they may not - but the perception is
often there that they might)....

Certainly can, and have. But there are certain clothes that

| Hm, interesting, Kath.
I often feel my sexiest in a sweater, baggy jeans, work boots, and a
layer of sweat from yard work. I feel strong then, competent, close
to the earth -- and more like sex. I tend not to feel sexy in traditionally
sexy clothing, like stockings and clinging skirts, because I feel out of
place in them. I feel like I'm playing a role that isn't a good one for
me.
But as Dave pointed out in .28, the main thing that makes me feel sexy
is having a man (preferably my own man) looking at me with desire.
Getting sweaty together -- working together, a long bike ride -- then
climbing into a nice warm soapy shower together and scrubbing each other --
and then adjourning to the bedroom -- now that's sexy. (And hard to do
with the kids around. Sigh.)

| Gappy teeth and a sort of vague "just what is going on here?"
expression are very sexy. As are wit, naturally pale or naturally dark
skin, lust, hair that isn't paid much attention to, height, leather,
curiosity, sweatshirts and black jeans, brown eyes, dancing, short
nails, alto voices, I'd better stop...
Why are they sexy? Geez, isn't it obvious? (: >,)
Actually, some of these cues reveal that I went through adolescence in
the mid-'70s. In those halcyon days of '60s-afterglow (or hangover),
"sexy" meant "convenient for sex". So a carefully arranged hairdo was
not sexy, and loose easily sheddable clothing was. Yeah, I know, we
had no sense of style.
As already seen, you won't get a consensus on this topic. The
swimsuit-issue and Playboy airbrushed plucked freezing models leave me
unmoved, and so does "tasteful" makeup. Stranger still, for some
reason that I don't understand, Tuesday Weld is not the highest paid

Some of the other comments in this topic remind me of my favorite

confusion which we know exists".

| Let's see if I understand all this:
1. The subjects (!) of the term sexy vary enormously.
2. It's not necessary for someone else to be around for a person
to feel sexy.
Experiencing something "sexy" makes me feel really good, and then I
start to analyze the reaction. If I'm looking at a picture, I tell
myself it's a 2 dimensional object that I'm leering at and that kills
and sexy feelings. I just laugh at myself then. Tha same reaction with
films. What I'd like to know is what my senses are telling my brain
when I see a sexy lady ( who is Tuesday Weld anyway ?)
For the record, I like the "fire in the eyes" or as Bob Seger put
it ,"the fire down below". Yep, has to be the eyes. Even pictures
of them , dammit, why is my pulse rate rising. I'm only thinking
about a long dead lady, Marilyn Monroe.
I do not define as sexy women who:
- wear dirty clothes
- don't wash
- don't wear perfume even a little deoderant helps
- confuse manners with sexual discrimination
- self centred
But, a lady glistening is seductive. Don't matter what she's wearing,
I'm just as confused as ever, this'll do for now.

Some time back we were talking about strippers being sexy, tight
jeans, loose jeans, smiles, hair, etc.
For me 'sexy' means something that triggers an image/response in
me. The *something* is also not deliberate on the part of the person
who is sexy. My sexy might not be your sexy.
'Erotic' is the deliberate attempt to trigger an image or response.
Therefore, strippers are trying to be erotic. Even porn movies are
erotic in that they are attempting to elicit a specific response.
I personally think long hair (Crystal Gale turns me to putty), a
woman in a skirt who can walk with that special swing, some voices,
my wife when she is undressing (because she is not deliberately
trying to be sexy....sometimes when she has tried to strip it has
been funnier than erotic, but the laughing was sexy) are particularly
sexy.
So sexy is very personal. I like what I like.

For me, most women that I've seen wearing stockings wear them by

A woman must have pride in herself, shyness or confidence doesn't
matter. Some overweight(NOT fat) women can be sexy. Being too thin
is a no-no. Quiet self-confidence, a good dress sense, a mature
attitude(which can happen in an 18 year old or 80 year old as physical
age is immaterial to maturity, IMHO) all help. It also means wearing
make up as and when necessary, but it is not mandatory.
Other points, the walk must be mmmmmmm, the eyes must beguile.

Okay, but I don't know how it is going to help the opposite sex. ;-)
Good luck with the consensus. Sometimes voting comes in handy.
Nonphysical things that are sexy to me:
======================================
A cowboy hat; a bomber jacket; a smirk; uniforms; cowboy boots; a
swagger; a peasant shirt; boxer shorts; an arm band around the bicep;
tank tops; a barely visible, sleeveless tee shirt under a dress shirt
and tie.
Physical things that are sexy to me:
===================================
Mustaches, dark hair (combined with blue eyes!), hairy chests, big
hairy forearms, the little triangle of hair at the base of a man's
back, a square jaw, a line of hair running up the stomach to the
chest, a deep voice, and height combined with beefy weight.
Sexiest commercial (to me):
==========================
That Miller Genuine Draft TV commercial that shows the cowboy boots of
the guy walking into the diner on a hot day. The jukebox starts up
without anyone turning it on, playing, "Put a Spell on You." The
waitress, sweating, asks what he wants. The camera shows only his

| OK, Ger ok .
I guess this whole thing could dry up without a resolution.
IMHO:
1. Too many confuse erotic with sexy.
2. People consider something is sexy if they percieve it as bringing
them another step closer to an orgasm.

> 1. Too many confuse erotic with sexy.
I did this for my own knowledge. These definitions are from the
American Heritage Dictionary:
Erotic 1) Of, concerning, or tending to arouse sexual desire;
2) Dominated by sexual desire.
Sexy Arousing or intending to arouse sexual desire or interest.
They sound like near synonyms to me. I suppose if you take
connotation into consideration (instead of strict dictionary
definitions), the connotation of erotic is "sexy +", a very high level
of sexiness, getting to a point of excitement that is much closer
toward "having sex."
If people "confuse" erotic with sexy, I think that's very
understandable. It's just a difference of a few degrees of heat.

I've read this whole conference, and I can't believe no one has
mentioned the sexiest man alive!!! MEL GIBSON...
WHY!? he's got the look! 'LETHAL' definately lethal!!!
his face is so masculine, strong jaw line (I LOVE that), serious, sexy
eyes, nice full hair, that breath taking Austrailan accent. Coy
playfull smile, beautiful teeth, PERFECT, he's just perfect!!
His body isn't 'overbuilt', he looks great in jeans, and a tee shirt
with a red flannel over it.. I love the "lumberjack outdoors look"..
work boots and not TOO much hair on the chest. Oh, and lets not
forget to meniton those 'back pockets' on his Levis'!!!! *(SIGH)*

I don't feel it's necessarily how a man looks (his
physical appearance) that projects sexiness.
To me it's something that comes from the inside...
maybe it's a sense of *I'm okay, you're okay*, or
maybe just that he feels secure about himself...it's
a special light in his eyes, a certain kind of walk
and the way he carries himself....that projects
sexy to me.

I agree that physical appearance is not always a determining factor,
though. For example, Ted Danson is good looking, but not sexy,
to me, while Keith Richards, while not being goodlooking (and some
say homely as hell), is to me, a very sexy man. Part of what makes
a person appear sexy is what the combination of their appearance,
personality and actions, inspire you to imagine about them.
I also agree with .43, when it comes to real relationships my lists
go out the window.
Some things I find sexy about men: broad shoulders, a body with
no fat but not too skinny, nice smile, nice well-kept, long hair, beards and
moustaches, casual dress especially tight jeans, an earring, long
eye lashes, British accents, wit, left-wing political views, being
a musician (except for the beard I think I just described the

I added the 'y' at the end of sex, because I agree with that
statement...I don't agree when the work "sex" is used,
though.
I have this black dress. It's long, almost to my ankles.
full skirt, high neck, long sleeves. Nothing "revealing"
about it. And I've had to quit wearing it to work because of
the comments I get about it and about how "sexy" I look.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being sexy, but not at work...I
like being a professional at work.
I wear black most all the time...and, yes, it's what I would

Seriously, though. Black is quite often an attempt to break

Jody> honest question - do personality or brains count for anything - or only
Jody> if they're accompanied by looks?
Well, I don't normally consider someone "sexy" based on their
brain/personality.
That's a factor in attractiveness not sexiness (at least for
me).
If I see a guy walking down the street that I think is the
absolute sexiest man I've seen in a lifetime......how am I
supposed to know if he's got a great personality and is
intelligent?
I also might add that to me looks isn't the major contributor
to sexiness. Attitude/stance is. If he's got that "look" in
his eyes and if he's standing "just so", I'll melt.
And I would hazard a guess that some (het) men in here would
agree that a woman who is obviously uncomfortable in a mini
and heels.....and in a raunchy mood is probably not near as
sexy as a woman with a sure gait, her head held high and a
smile on her face wearing the same clothes the other woman
was wearing.
So, no...for me, brains have nothing to do with being sexy.
Personality....uhmmm.....maybe....

| Really what is sexy in a woman?
This could mean anything depending on the woman. Some women there eyes might
turn you on, some there shape, some there legs, some have a super personality,
and then some there intelligent. I think it would depend upon
me at the moment.
When I was young footloose and fancy free, any one of the above would turn me
on at any given time. Now that I married and not looking it would take a hell
of a woman to make me change my ways.
That does'nt mean we cant all look, and enjoy. But I stiil like a good set of
legs.

I know what you mean, but (and not talking YOU personally), that's
a shame. It sounds like one without an "attractive" (quotes are
because I suppose that definition varies) appearance might as resign
themselves to never being given a chance.
I'm not really goodlooking (I don't think so...), BUT I have the
fortunate incidence to encounter one of those "network" romances
.106 mentioned. Personality (and in this case, voice ;) won out
a lot -- I happened to have the good fortune that the gentlman on
the other end turned out to be an attractive gent (in my own not
very humble at all opinion) as well. OH, I do admit that I have
been known to look at attractive men and ogle a bit, and think,
"gee, I'd like to meet them". But, having learned from the other
end of the fence that to have that "opening of the door" based entirely
on looks isn't a pleasant thing, I know I would never do that to
another person. Looks is nice, but there has to be SOMETHING else
more substantial to make me crack the door open a bit.
Still, what I wish and what happens are two different things. Human
beings are very visual creatures - it makes sense that eye-pleasing
people are the ones who get the door opened, and the ones who aren't
as eye-pleasing, don't. Sad, but true.

In all honesty, I suppose I could say the same about me. However,
at least I know with some small comfort that at times, a man who
I did not think was initially attractive (we are not talking repulsive
here) over time, through manner and exposure (not like THAT!!!
;), has become attractive to me. I'm not sure that this is what
the basenote was looking for tho. I get the sense most people aren't
willing to "wait" on physical attractiveness.

| Well, it's been interesting reading all the comments but as was inferred
in the previous reply, it's not what I was hoping for.
Time to state the obvious, we all agree that different "things"
are perceived by different people as being sexy.
Now then, all the different subjects of the term "sexy" produce
basically the same emotional and physical reactions. The subject
can be lingerie, Tom Cruise, Kim Basinger, beards, glasses, long
hair etc etc and it is dependant on the observer.
What I'm looking for is an explanation of the reaction not a list
of the causes, because this reaction seems to be **almost** the
same in everyone.

| The question "Can someone who does not initially bring about a favorable sexual
response ever be sexy?" has been asked. And the answer for me is "yes."
It seems that in this age, most people prefer someone who immediately rings
the bell, rather than someone who can make interesting music with other
instruments. In doing so, many people miss out on some of the more interesting
textures and nuances in life.

Lorna, hey watch it!! I resemble that remark. And, furthermore,
I am not a poor devil, just a plain ole devil!! :^)
Yeah, I'm down-right UGLY and damn proud of it!!
I'd rather be ugly now, than worry that time will catch-up
with me as it does to all of us and ruin good looks!! I have
hopes that after being ugly this early that once I get old
it can only improve.....

Hey, it took me 43 years to get this way, I wasn't lucky
