244.0. "Noisy motorcycles?" by QUIP::MCMURRAY () Fri Aug 24 1990 16:18

I'm curious. Has anyone noticed the motorcycles constantly cruising
the streets of Maynard lately? Is anybody bothered by the noise
    they make?

Yes, we have noticed the increase in and constant noise of motorcycles
lately. And yes, we are bothered by the noise. I live on Summerhill
Rd. which runs parallel to Main St with the Assabet River as a valley.
The sound of the 2 cylinder cycles echoes through the valley.

    That's because it is summer.
244.3I notice the noise, too...SKETCH::HORRIGANWed Sep 05 1990 13:4332
yes - we have a problem with motorcycles.

I'm glad someone else has noticed this, since the people at my house
have felt like we are the only ones bothered by them.

The new "superbikes" seem to be the problem. they are as loud and more
annoying than the largest of the Harley-davidsons. Now don't get me
wrong, I like bikes and I had a dirt bike myself a while ago, and I
like the feel of the wind and the freedom that comes with a bike.

But this summer inoticed that there are two or three guys that have the
new superbikes (japanese) and they tend to show off their speed around
town. They've woken up my 2 year old from a nap or from a sound sleep
at night more than once, and it's tough to try and get a kid back to
sleep that just got scared out of a sound sleep bny the sound of one of
    the bikes going by.

I don't mind the bikes speeding up once in a while, hey, I used to do
it and it felt real good. But they don't have to try to break speed and
sound barriers every time they move -

sorry to sound off so, but I was afraid that I was the only one that
noticed - but I have heard a few other people around town have
complained about them. I don't think the police care about it either,
since I saw one of the bikes doing a short wheelie at about 40 MPH down
main street, with a cop in a cruiser not less than 50 yards behind him.

How come regular people can get pulled over and get a ticket for a
defective muffler that isn't as loud as some of these bikes?

    edh.

244.4I find lawn mowers more annoying -- you can depend on them starting up each weekend...PRAGMA::GRIFFINDave GriffinThu Sep 06 1990 18:1011
I live down the street from Chris, and the sound does echo over the river
every once in awhile. While annoyed, it has never been persistant enough
for me to complain. Admittedly I'm not always at home, but the number of
days when these free spirits bothered me was only a handful, and they'll
be putting away their toys soon.

If they actually went down my street, I suppose I would have a different
opinion.

I live on Mill st, the end down by the river, and I just hate
the way people use this long straight stretch as a drag strip.
Motorcycles and cars.

I live on Ethelyn Cir., and I can hear those guys
when they go down Powdermill Rd. I don't mind, though.
    :-)
I think that article in the paper is just going to egg
those guys on. I know who they are, they don't purposely
annoy residents, they just like their bikes to be loud.
Inconsiderate, I guess. If they knew people were complaining,
then they'd do it for kicks. The police know exactly who
they are, too. Why they don't do anything....I don't know.

Just be glad you don't live in California, where the
weather is perfect for riding motorcycles *YEAR ROUND*. :-)

                        -Jennifer

    P.S. I have a "Jap" bike, myself, but I can't afford those
    pipes. ;-)
244.7A growing problemGTIGUY::CLOSETue Sep 11 1990 16:3923
I notice this, and I think it's become a problem. Certainly on my
street, Lincoln St., it's a problem. The noise is obnoxious, but
short-lived. It's just your standard motorheads revving up their
bikes. I wish they wouldn't make such a racket, but it's not as
    sustained as a lawnmower.

What does bother me, though, is their speeding. Three of these geeks
either live at or visit a house on the corner of Charles and Lincoln
Streets. They have fairly large Japanese "super bikes" (perhaps
to compensate for some other, fairly small item ;-) couldn't
resist!) These guys really tear down Lincoln St in formation. I
have a three year old son, and I'm nervous about the obvious problem
    that can develop here.

Jennifer -- you say you know who it is. If these three guys are
the ones, tell them to knock it off. I can never catch them as they
fly by. I don't begrudge them their fun on the bikes; that's their
right. But there are some neighbors, more hotheaded than I am, who've
made some observations about what they'd like to do with these guys.
I don't want that kind of stuff to develop in what's a very nice
neighborhood. These riders should just take it easy on small,
residential streets. That's only common sense. Let it rip on
Rt. 2 or other big roads.
244.8Almost over....ICS::BELMORETue Sep 11 1990 17:0517

.7- I often worry about those guys speeding as well.
Among the bunch of them (about 10 of us total) half are
obnoxious; of those 5, two are pretty much brainless, and
I would *NEVER* a) Get on the back of their bikes. b) Be
seen with them...guilt by association, you know. I will
say something to them. When riding my motorcycle, I am
always watching for possible accidents, some of my friends
aren't so considerate. You can't tell them enough. Y'know?
Brainless maniacs. I understand your point. The season
is almost over....and no major accidents..knock on wood.

244.9DROPIT::BENHAMWed Sep 12 1990 07:577
.8 - No major accidents? What about the accident on Florida Road
August 29th when a speeding motocyclist hit Chris Warren (I believe
Chris is about 17 - a senior in high school) who was walking home
after work and go hit while crossing the street? Chris had to have
pins and a plate put in his ankle because it was crushed so badly.
Chances are that even with theraphy he will never walk with out a
    limp.

9.- Oops, forgot about that. I know Chris, I
don't know the man who hit him. When I said "No
major accidents", I was referring to the crazy group
of my friends. I am surprised that they haven't killed
    themselves screwing around.

Maynard is a strange place.....more so every
    day.....

The one who got caught DWI is one of the brainless,
(OBVIOUSLY). This is his second time this year for that.
He has NO right to be on a bike. I plan to chew him out
when I see him. I can't understand how someone can do that.

244.19noting policiesTOOK::DITMARSPeteTue Oct 02 1990 12:0017
Please attempt to adhere to DEC's corporate policies when noting.

See note 1.2 for a statement on DEC's noting policy, note 1.1 for a
statement on MAYNARD conference policy, and note 225 for a discussion of
those policies.

I have contacted the folks who have entered replies to this note that I consider
potentially legally troublesome to DEC.

I am not, however, a lawyer, nor is it my full time job to moderate this
conference, so I appreciate everyone's cooperation in attempting to note in a
manner that makes good business sense for DEC.

Happy noting.

To clean up my act here, I am simply going to say that
no matter what town you are in, no matter who the officer is.
If you have not done anything wrong, don't stand for it.
Police officers work for YOU! Let them know that!

Though in principal I whole-heartedly agree with the sentiments expressed in
.20, all I can say is, "Good luck fighting the system."

I might add that I don't believe in "luck" -- good or bad -- and neither do I
have faith in the system. The police may work for us, but all too often the
system works against us.

It's my personal feelings that the basenote and subsequent replies do
not value the difference of motorcyclists. Funny how the conversation
quickly gained a "they all speed through town wrecklessly" flavor. I'm
very sorry if you do not like the sound of motorcycles. IMO, they're
not louder than the town of Maynard's DPW turcks. I, personally, do
not like the sound of the larger trucks, but I don't put notes in
    generalizing on truckers in general.
