I heard ST8 involves time travel (puke!), so that could explain the "first
contact" subtitle.

| Spoiler, I guess:
The time travel and "first contact" thing probably has some connection
with the rumor I'd heard that one of the main characters in the film
(other than the usual TNG crew appropriately dressed in colorless
uniforms) is none other than Zefram Cochrane, who "discovered the
space warp" if I recall the exact terminology from the old episode
"Metamorphosis". They did not get the original actor (Glenn Corbett,
I think) to play Cochrane.
In addition, there's also a new Enterprise (because ILM gleefully ditched
the despised Enterprise-D in the previous film), and something called
a "Borg Queen" (your guess is as good or better than mine).
Apparently Jonathan Frakes (Riker, aka Number One) is directing. This
may be lucky for the audience if his directing duties manage to keep
him off the screen most of the time.

In the trailer there appeared to be two Borg ships, one the familiar
square shape one, and a 2nd GIANT sized ship shapped much differently.
Maybe this 2nd ship is the Queen ship?

Unless he directs as bad as Shatner :-)

His directing is excellent! He directed some of the best TNG episodes
for example the episode "Frame of mind" where he is on an alien
world in prison but can't differentiate between what is a real
or in his mind.

| Frakes really isn't a bad director. He's done some pretty good
episodes and seems to know his way behind a camera. Can't say the same
for other TNG alums who have tried (yes, Burton, I'm talking about
you).
I'm kind of anxious to see what he can do with a mega-budget and plenty
of time.

| re: mega-budget
Somewhere I'd read that the budget for ST:FC was around $40 million.
I haven't been keeping up with movie budgets lately; is that considered
about average, or somewhat above or below average, for this kind of
film (presumably with lots of effects footage, etc.)?

I interprested the comment about the mega-budget to be relative
(in comparision to) the per-episode budget for the ST:TNG TV series.
BTW, is principle shooting already complete for ST:FC?

-1 is right, I meant the mega-budget comment relative to the
per-episode budget of television.
