I only got to watch my tape of Motorweek Illustrated last night.
On it they reported that the NHRA Cajun Nats are being dropped
from next years calendar. Reasons given include; a deteriorating
facility, diminishing attendance and a lack of long term event
sponsorship.
I wonder if they will replace it or leave the calendar alone
at 18 (?) races?

Some results from the NHRA US Nats...
TF Amato (5.04) def. Hawley (5.3)
FC McCulloch def. Hoover
PS Eckman def. Morgan
Darrel Gwynn appeared on Speedweek last week. He looked well and
was interviewed at length. He will have surgery to remove more of
his left arm so that an articulated (hinged at the "elbow")
prosthesis can be fitted. This will take place after the big
fund raising softball game in a couple of weeks at Reading PA
between pro drag racers and Winston Cup drivers.
Darrel was at Indy where his team advanced to the finals before
they had an off-pace run in the finals. He wants very much to get
involved with the management of the team again. Frank Hawley will
continue to drive in the '91 season and Coors Extra Gold will sponsor.

100.14 | DOWN TO THE WIRE | COMET::TRIPLETT | | Wed Oct 10 1990 02:35 | 22 |
| IN TOP FUEL with a 394-point lead, JOE AMATO is in the driver's seat for
his third championship in the last six seasons. But because that figuree
represents less than two round-win, he could be hopelessly behind heading
into the WINSTON FINALS if he gose out earty at the CHIEF NATIONAL- a race
at which traditionally he dose not do well- and should ORMSBY the defending
champion, win again. For GARY ORMSBY, qualifying points at the last two
races will be crucial. Should he qualify behind AMATO by three positions
(or six points), he will fall more than 400 points behind the leader- which
means he will need to win three more rounds- a nearly impossible task in the
light of AMATO's season-long consistency (13 semifinal appearances in 17
races.)
IN FUNNY CAR JOHN FORCE has yet to clinch the championship he and McCULLOCH
have been trying for so many years to win. But after this race he could.
With a lead of more than 1,000 points going into TEXAS, he mathematically
cam slam the door on " THE ACE " with a victory. But even if he loses in
the first round nad McCULLOCH wins it all, FORCE will head to the last race
in first place, unless McCULLOCH sets a NATIONAL RECORD. A stunning second
round loss at TOPEEKA has clouded McCULLOCH immediate points future. Even
though he has advanced to more finals than FORCE has (8 to FORCE's 7),
McCULLOCH has won 4 times to FORCE 7 times this year. Of course, McCULLOCH
has always done well at the "PLEX", and if he dose again- and FORCE gose
down early- he will still be in it with one to go.

TF and FC are pretty exciting this year. But, I'm really psyched to
see the tight points race in Pro Stock! After years of domination
Glidden has had a bad year, by his standards, and that has opened the
door for an old-time rival and some upstarts. I have been thrilled to
see the Wayne County team run so well this year and *love* to see them
take the championship title. Alderman is hot right now and the car is
super quick. Whatever the outcome of the championship this is a super
situation in PS and I hope we see more of this tight competition in the
years to come!

100.16 | MORE DOWN TO THE WIRE | COMET::TRIPLETT | | Wed Oct 10 1990 17:19 | 29 |
| IN PRO STOCK
WARREN JOHNSON has been the quickest and the fastest almost all season,
but he's won just one race. He's lost at five straight races- all of
which he could have won- with unexpected starting-line blunders, yet
he's maintaind his slim lead. As W J heads to two tracks at which he
has allways run well, he's got all that any racer can ask for: His fate
is still in his own hands.
LARRY MORGAN dosen't have the edge he held over everyone at INDY, and
since his heartbreaking final-round loss there, the magic appears gone.
MORGAN's greatest asset is probably his coolness under fire. Nothing
seen to rattle him, and in the head to head showdowns with the other
four contenders that are sure to crop up, that means ths world.
DARRELL ALDERMAN in mid-season, after he'd failed to qualify at a pair
of National events while working the bugs out of a new Dodge, the other
contenders, aware of his car's seemingly unlimited power reserves. Less
than a round out of first place, the driver of the class' quickest car
should be rated the favorite.
JERRY ECKMAN has no trouble in the pressure-packed finals that have done
in so many points-conscious drivers this year: He's undefeated in four
1990 finals. It's been in the early rounds, against drivers he's been
heavily favored to beat, when things have gone wrong. If he can get
through those matches, he figures to hold his own against the other
hitters in the end.
If BOB GLIDDEN pulls this one out, they'll probably never beat him.
GLIDDEN has stumbled through his worst season since 1982- when he won
just one race- yet he's still in it. GLIDDEN is less than three rounds
out of first place, he knows every possible way to win, and, certainly
won't have his heart in his throat if he's still there when it's all
on the line.

It sounds like a wild weekend at the Texplex!
Oswald blew an engine in HALF, torched the funny car and his own body
and hit both guard rails in the process. He was released from the
hospital with 1st degree burns and was resting at his hotel, no other
injuries.
TF Amato went out in the second round, Ormsby in the semis.
Frank Hawley (5.08/277) def Eddie Hill (5.46)
FC Mike Dunn is making his presence felt again! Joe Pisano should
*never* have let him get away. Jim Dunn, Mike's dad is wrenching
the car, which is sponsored by Snickers candy bars. Mike described
their combination as a "match-race setup with money". Dunn defeated
McColloch in the 2nd round and Force in the semis.
Mike Dunn (5.45) def Jim White
This is their 2nd final-round appearance in as many races!
PS Standings are all shaken up now as...
Tony Christian (7.35/186) def Darrell Alderman (rats!)
Alderman's car jumped out of gear at midtrack in the final. But,
he does leave the Texplex with the PS points lead as I understand
it.
Pomona ought to be great! Wish I was goin'...

I don't know the story about $s for the Johns crew. At the beginning
of the season Amato and Ormsby were struggling to get their
combinations sorted out. This was a result of the new rules mostly.
The Johns crew apparently had it figured out early but then several
other teams caught up. Also, some observers expected the Johns team
to have trouble in the middle of the season when the racing took place
on real horsepower tracks, and indeed such appeared to be the case.
Lori is still in 4th place in the points though. Not bad.

going into the last race. In funny car McCulloch has a slim chance if
Force dosn't show up so it a good bet that Force will win the champion-
ship. In pro stock Eckman and Morgan would have to go three rounds more
that Alderman to bet him. If Alderman win the first round Glidden five
year reign at the top is over and so is W J shot for a first title. If
Alderman make to the semi's he's lock up the title, no matter what Eckman
and Morgan do. In top fuel Ormsby has to go a round further than Amato
and pick up low ET and outqualify Amato and we would have a tie. Which
Amato would win on the thrid tie-breaker or it could go all the way down
to both drivers in the final round with the winner taking home all the
marbles.

| Hi Guys,
This is a bit of a note from good 'ol England.
Well it has been a while since the motors have been turning on the
Drag racing trail in the USA and we here in England have been lacking the
news. It is one of the wonders of this world of ours that it takes
National Dragster 6 weeks to reach us. Have any of you Guys (or Gals)
have any info for us.
I must add to this reply that I for one have been most grateful for the
information that has been posted in this note since the start of the'90
season.
I also realise that some contributers have left DEC in that time, but I
hope that the flow of info will continue to flow......
Cheers and a Happy New Year to you all for '91

| Can't remember who was driving, or who the sponsor was, but on NHRA
Today a couple of weeks ago they said that the car was being parked.
There was no further news on when it would run again, if the team was
for sale or anything. This was the same week that Lori Johns whole crew
resigned.

Read in June 91 Super Stock magazine an article on Clark's
car. Mobil 1 is/was sponsor. Tom "Mongoose" McEwen is/was
driver. Crew is/was from Ormsby's 1990 team of Crew-chief
Mike Green, with Chuck Schifsky, and Don Loveless. I didn't
realize that they were going to park it!!!!
Re .132
Do you or anyone else know any more about Lori Johns crew?
I thought things were going pretty well for that team.
Sure wish I didn't let my National Dragster subscription run
out.

100.31 | Lori John's new crew | CHIRPA::MEREDITH | | Thu May 30 1991 12:46 | 17 |
| Re .133
On "NHRA Today", they interviewed Lori Johns at a recent NHRA event
and she was quite happy with her new crew and chief mechanic (I don't
remember his name but he was the chief mechanic for a funny car team
last year). At their first event together she ran a 5.01 and a 4.98?
She seemed very pleased.
Her mechanic said the biggest difference between funny car and top fuel
was the clutch adjustments, but so far he hadn't hit any stumbling
blocks.
I believe her old crew had alot of family members, including her
father, and are still on amicable terms with her, they had just gotten
tired of the fast pace of the NHRA circuit.

Didn't she win some big drag event recently? Presumably this was SINCE
her old team quit?
I don't know b*gger all about drag racing, but the sight of a glamorous
blonde in Motoring News (a British motorsport weekly) caught my
attention...

100.33 | Back to Jack Clark | SALEM::VINCENT | | Mon Jun 03 1991 16:35 | 4 |
| According to NHRA TODAY Larry Meyer, Lori Johns' ex crew chief has
signed on with Jack Clark's team nd the car will be back in action at
the Summernationals. I don't think they said who was driving, but the
sponsor continues to be Mobil 1.
