1.1 | Digital Policy on Commenting on Businesses in Notes files | ZAYIUS::BROUILLETTE | Think powder... | Mon Oct 22 1990 13:39 | 48 |
| **DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY **
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Message from Ron Glover Corporate Personnel OCT 1990
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the last several months Digital has been contacted by a number
of individuals and business entities that were angry about negative
comments made about them in our Notesfiles and Conferences. As the
Personnel Policy Manager for Digital I have been the recipient of
many of those notes. I thought I should take the time to post this
note to inform employees that it is not appropriate for them to make
negative comments or references about any person or business entity
in any of Digital's employee interest notesfile or conferences.
There are several reasons why we are establishing this rule. The
first has to do with fundamental fairness. It is simply not fair for
an employee to make a negative comment about a business when we
don't provide those businesses an opportunity to respond and defend
themselves. This is particularly true given the fact that we have no
way of determining whether the comment is honest, fair or accurate.
Clearly Digital has no intention, or desire, to open up its
notesfiles to third-party businesses so that they can engage in a
debate about whether they provide quality services. The only logical
solution then is to ask our employees to refrain from using the
Notesfiles to air grievances they have with individuals, vendors, or
organizations.
In addition to out concerns about fairness, we are concerned about
the potential damage that these kinds of comments may cause to
third-party businesses. In that regard, employees should understand
that they may be personally liable if the statements they make cause
harm to any person or business. Moreover, there is some possibility
Digital may be held liable for such comments as well. Stated more
simply, comments made in a Notesfile or conference are in no way
privileged or immune from claims of liable, slander or defamation.
We are asking all of the users of Notesfiles to exercise discretion
and judgement in the comments that they make in the system. We are
also asking moderators to go back and review the notesfiles they
moderate and to remove any notes that include derogatory references
to third-party businesses.
Please feel free to contact your moderator if you have any questions
on this subject.

| does this mean the accusations of halitosis and other derogatory
comments about certain public figures in the sport is now banned?
or does the special case provision for public figures in libel and
slander cases apply here too? (I hope so!)

Does that mean we cannot cast opinions on whether the McLaren is a
better chassis than Ferrari, Goodyear better than Pirelli? I suppose
since most of these type of companies are not marketing partners for
Digital that they are fair game.

pretty dull. Could we perhaps get the F1 stuff from CARSUK
copied over here on a daily basis?

| Or better yet, you could all pitch in to help me build up my motor, and
sponsor me for a full season or rallying next year! In return, I would
paint all your names on the sides of the car (location determined by
size of donation :-), and promise to write (hopefully) entertaining
articles about my experiences!
Kidding aside for the moment, I do think it would be fair to say I am
driving one of the highest-placing American rally cars in the US and
Canada today, unless you count Eagle Talons. Of course, we are becoming
a rare breed.
Enough boasting, back to our regularly scheduled silence :-)

P.S. I re-read last reply, I meant to say "highest-finishing American-make
(ie. Dodge) rally car".

After my accident at Lime Rock two years ago, a photographer sent me
pictures of my car on The Hook. My wife liked one so much she took it
to work.
Since I didn't have my car number or sponsorship on the bottom, he sent
me a picture of someone elses car on the hook too. They all look pretty
similar from the bottom, to an amateur ;-).
I've painted the bottom white since then!

| It is with very mixed feelings that I must announce the need to end my
tenure as moderator of this conference.
I am forced to do so because of the imminent end of my employment
tenure with Digital. Yes, I have been caught in the current TFSO
round.
I have no regrets, the handwriting on the wall was clear for long
enough and I did nothing to forestall it. I view the future as
presenting an array of interesting opportunities, I'm only sorry that
my success and Digital's will no longer lie along the same path. Well,
actually there is one regret: I'm sorry that my termination package is
not lucrative enough to support my transition to full-time professional
racing driver... :-)
In addition to saying "goodbye" to my friends here, I want to suggest
that anyone interested in signing up to help with moderating the
conference should volunteer to Mike Brouillette. Mike has been the
other moderator of RACERS for awhile now, and I'm leaving it up to him
to decide about replacing me - but I'm sure knowing anyone that may be
interested will be helpful to him in considering that issue. Send mail
to Mike at NHASAD:: Brouillette if you're interested...
Goodbye, and thanks!

today. If I manage to find a time when no one is accessing the file I
will swap in a temporary conf in its place and convert the real file.
This shouldn't cause too much confusion.

962.0 has been moved to 931.90 and answered
962.1 has been appended to new topic 963 (which I may renumber back to
962) with a new topic title.

| The system this conf is on (OASS) will be going away in a month or so. I
plan to clean up the conf (renumber the notes because there are lots of
open gaps between notes) and move it to VMSNET. I'll announce the move
before I do it, hopefully within a week or so.

1.20 | Reshuffling has been completed | AIMTEC::BURDEN_D | A bear in his natural habitat | Thu Sep 22 1994 13:49 | 20 |
| The cleanup is basically done. The new layout looks something like this:
Notes Desc
1-8 Misc, conf notices
9-19 Rallying (2 empty)
20-29 Formula 1 (4 empty)
30-38 NASCAR (5 empty - should we remove these??)
39-50 Indy/CART (2 empty)
51-69 (empty, aimed at Indy/Cart expansion)
70-98 Racing personalities, Obits (5 empty)
99 Racing on TV (hopefully an easy number to remember)
100-199 Other series schedules and results (77 empty)
200-up Everything else
We now have 335 topics, but about 100 are blank.
I'm not going to enforce placing new topics in the 'proper' place, but
will probably move them when I get around to it.

| Okay, the NASCAR stuff is gone and I've consolidated the pointers to other
conferences, internet mailing lists and WWW sites into a new note 6.
I would rather keep the older notes around. One of the previous mods did a
wholesale deletion of older notes and and that caused all the big gaps.
Besides, the disk space is cheap.

1.29 | We're back on line! | AIMTEC::BURDEN_D | A bear in his natural habitat | Tue Aug 08 1995 12:26 | 10 |
| About 1.5 weeks ago RACERS was moved from one disk to another when OASS was
downsized from a cluster to a single node. Somehow the file got corrupted and
notes could not be written to it. I've used PAN to recreate the file and
hopefully this version should work.
I think some of the newer notes have been lost, but I don't have the time to
track them down. The old file will probably hang around as RACERS_V1.NOTE for a
few weeks in case you want to peruse it.
