1266.0. ""Sliders" on FOX" by CSOA1::LENNIG (Dave (N8JCX), MIG, @CYO) Wed Mar 22 1995 08:34

Looks like FOX is doing yet another sci-fi program...
From the ads, premise seems to be parallel universes.

    2 hour premier is tonight.

Anybody seen anything interesting on the net about it?

1266.1Thanks, I'd forgotten about that...QUARRY::petertrigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertaintyWed Mar 22 1995 10:4313
Haven't looked just yet. But I do know that this has been in development
some time. First heard about it a few years ago on the net, and when I
saw the ad recently I thought, ah, they finally got the go ahead on
this one. Yep, parallel universes (sliding between, get it? ;-)
Apparently someone's experiment goes a little awry and well, something
along those lines. I expect we'll see a lot of what if type of
worlds (what if the South had won the civil war, the Germans won WWII,
that type of thing).

oh yeah, looks like John Rhys Davies is one of the stars, so it should
provide some entertainment. Maybe.

Premier wasn't too bad; Some interesting plot twists...

I thought the ending was kind of spooky; I mean how will they really
*know* if they ever get back "home". BTW, I couldn't help but wonder
where their analogs from that last universe were...

I rather enjoyed the premier, actually; unlike VR:5, which I
just couldn't get into, Sliders was, well, fun. I wouldn't be
    surprised if it catches on...

Did anyone in the MRO complex [complex?? Geez, there's only 2
buildings here now!! 8^)] tape this?

I play pool Wednesdays, and was going to tape it but I forgot.

    	Thanks!!

    	At first,
I was skeptical of this show especially when they
arrived in the soviet U.S.A. My first reflex was OH..
NO THIS is a ripoff on "Voyagers" the old tv show
that had the time-traveler with his orphaned kid
side-kick bouncing from one piece of Mis-history
to another, setting things right along the way.
The male lead was the guy who killed himself
accidently with a stunt pistol by putting it
to his temple and the concussion from the blank
    	cartridge shattered his temple.
But I really enjoyed it after that, Rhy-Davis
will be a big plus for this show and the Cryin
Man might be a sleeper character.
I also like the fact they weren't afraid to kill
    	off a main character's alter-self i.e. Wade the
leader of the second American revolution.
The bit with the cab driver was cool too,
and leads to other plot twists with alter-character
differences from one parallel to the next.

I really enjoyed this. I thought it was very entertaining, and that last bit
was pretty chilling. Ditto on VR:5, I just can't get into that one.

cheap rip off of Quantum Leap.

As long as they changed demensions/worlds quickly the show was
interesting, but I think a 1 hour show dedicated to each slide will be
    rather boring.

At least with QL you were seeing a bit of history. With sliders there
isn't even this to redeem it.

Notice in the world where a green light means stop that the tail lights
on the vehicle were still red.

    Short run predicted by me...

1266.8ROCK::HUBERFrom Seneca to Cuyahoga FallsFri Mar 24 1995 09:487

Actually, it did remind me a bit of QL, too, though I condier
that to Sliders' benefit... I certainly wouldn't characterize
it as a "cheap rip off", more a similar concept, but a different
    execution...

1266.9White Castle as a Sponsor?ACIHUB::ROGERW::MONAGHANMy logic was not in error, however I was in error.Fri Mar 24 1995 10:489

I noticed the QL similarities also but the main
difference is that Sam was settting right the
wrong turns in individuals lifes not changing
the course of history gone astray. Voyagers
was more in this line, but I guess we will
have to see how much influence the "Sliders"
will exert on the various parallel universes
    	yet to come.

Did I miss something, or was there really no continuity between the
    premier and last nights episode?

ie What happenned after his "dad" walked into the dining room??

    Dave
1266.11NETRIX::thomasThe Code WarriorThu Mar 30 1995 09:501
I never expected continuity. They've jumped a few times between episodes.
1266.12Continuity? We don't need no steenking continuity!!!QUARRY::petertrigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertaintyThu Mar 30 1995 10:507
I think the general idea of the show basically speaks against continuity.
The only thing I'd expect is for the relationship between the main
characters to perhaps change, but I wouldn't bet on that. Once they
find they are not in the right universe, it's back to the drawing
board (or slide tube).

    	re. continuity
Too bad, I wanted to see how lunch with the cannibals
went. That ending scene was hilarous with Cryin Man
comparing himself as a "Chicken McNugget" to Rhy-Davis's
"Quarter Pounder"!! Also the scene with Wade recovering
and then the Prof. asking Quinn, if he told her about
the cannibals yet, was almost vintage "Young Indiana Jones-type"
    	stuff......very neat twist.

Finally there's something that hour before Law&Order comes on...
1266.15ROCK::HUBERFrom Seneca to Cuyahoga FallsThu Mar 30 1995 11:5915

    Hmmm...

On one hand, the second episode was even more Quantum Leap-like than
    the first.

OTOH, it was still good TV, and I liked Quantum Leap.

The lack of continuity, while I didn't expect it, didn't bother me.

In sum, I'm hooked. I'm glad it's on at 9, rather than 8, though I'd
really like something better on from 8-9, and wish Grace Under Fire
hadn't been put up against it...

    	Re. Continuity..again

I think there was an implied connection between the
end of show #1 and the start of show #2. They were
walking in the park and everyone is striking it
rich with oilwells. Then a friend congratulates
Quinn on the oilstrike in his backyard and Quinn
looks disturbed, not happy as his friend expected him
    	to be.
I believe the disturbed look was due to Quinn
thinking about his father being alive in this
universe which he is about to leave behind. I believe
the basis for this universe is one were only
"good" things happen to people..i.e. Dad doesn't
die, everyone is rich, so on, so on, so on. ......

1266.19Hey, Beavis, we've got an atom bomb, heh, heh, hehQUARRY::petertrigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertaintyThu Apr 06 1995 15:1710
Heck, that was one sloooowwww asteroid! By the time it would be throwing off
sparks, be visible like that, it would have to be in the atmosphere, and
it would be touching down in seconds. And don't try, well, it was close to
the sun so it would have been throwing off volatiles like any normal comet.
They made the point that this was AN ASTEROID and NOT A COMET. So was that
Beavis or Butthead in charge of nuclear power now? ;-)

Not to nitpick on the science or anything...

If that atomic bomb blew up the asteroid that Visible and close to
earth, I kept thinking, wouldn't these people be radioactive
very shortly....I've watched Sliders since its come on but
this is one of the worst shows (except for the actors John Ryes-Davies
and the guy in the cadilac) The girl and the main character?
    are a w f u l...actors c'mon guys this was made for 2 cents...

1266.21SLIDERS making a come back tonightRUSURE::MELVINTen Zero, Eleven Zero Zero by Zero 2Fri Mar 01 1996 11:288

It would appear that SLIDERS is coming back to FOX tonight (01_Mar_1996).
The add claimed all new episodes etc. Just thought I would mention it in
case anyone was interested (actually, I am not :-)).
