Subject: NEW SERIES Battlestar GALACTICA?
Date: 5 Apr 93 18:39:43 GMT
Sender: [email protected]
Organization: Brunel University, Uxbridge, UK

     ***********************************************
     Battlestar GALACTICA Lives...Again...Hopefully.
     ***********************************************

Apparently due to the popularity of ST:TNG and the release of new SF
shows like DeepSpace 9 and Babylon 5, Universal Studios is seriously
considering producing a *** NEW *** series of BG with Members of the
*** ORIGINAL *** cast.

Both RICHARD HATCH and DIRK BENEDICT have expressed an interest, and
the project is currently at the planning stage.

An international campaign is currently under way to persuade Universal
that THEY REALLY WANT TO DO THIS.

Please help by writing NOW to anyone who may have an influence; your
local or national TV company, SKY, other satellite and cable
companies; in the US the Sci-fi Channel, but most importantly please
write to the following two people:

Mr Thomas Thayer Ms Barbara Fisher
100 Universal City Plaza 100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City Universal City
CA 91608 CA 91608
USA USA

(Mr Thayer heads Universal Studio's Syndication division, while Ms
Fisher heads the cable division.)

Please write a short, polite letter explaining that you've heard that
there may be a new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA project in the pipeline and
how you'd love to see BG back on the air with original cast members.
Please make it look like an independent letter, and not one that just
a standard letter obviously from an international campaign.

For further info contact the unofficial BG UK fan club (The Thirteenth
Tribe) at: 19 Woodlands Road, Stanton, Burton-on-Trent, Staffs, DE15
9TH, United Kingdom.

- [email protected] ([email protected]).

P.S. If you can think of any other site, or other way of getting this
information out to those people who ought to know, please feel free. I
only ask that you retain the message completely intact and inform me
of where the information has been posted so I can keep others in the
campaign informed. 02/04/93.

Is it okay if I write a short, polite letter that says that this is a
monumentally BAD idea? The original show was dreck; a revival would
be worse than dreck, it would be dreck with old fogies in the lead
    roles.

    Oh man . . . a Battlestar Galactica reunion . . . oh man . . .

This is such a completely weird idea. I think a series would be as
abyssimal as the original - but I think a movie would be kinda fun . .

I still remember being 8 years old, watching the show and thinking
that the robots ( i forget the names ) with the ping-ponging little red
scanning light for eyes were the dumbest things. Is that where
Knightrider got the idea? Same quality of show, I think . . .

         Hi all,

Well.... The original was pretty campy compared to today's
standards, but I think if they did it right this time
it wouldn't be all that bad...

The basic premise was very much a rehash of a common plot
device, but it all depends on how well it is written,
how good the actors are, how good the effects are, how
well the physical universe holds with ours...

If they did it right it would be good...

                                                             Bye,
                                                              Mike.

P.S. The were called cylons... At the time I thought they looked
pretty cool, dumb as a rock, but cool looking none the less.

P.P.S I still have the Viper and the Cylon fighter, with firing
               missles no less!!! :^)

Some time ago, I came across a script posted in the Star Trek Notes
conference (I think; maybe it was on a bulletin board) which
described how the fleeing BG fleet meets up with the ST:TNG
Enterprise. Pretty fair treatment of both series, I'd say; plenty of
opportunity for special effects!

Now THAT I'd love to see!.

1136.10There was a BG sequelVERGA::KLAESLife, the Universe, and EverythingFri Apr 09 1993 12:569
BG did have a sequel: GALACTICA 1980, when the starship crew
finds Earth in guess which year? It was even campier and less
scientific than the original series. Starbuck made a guest appearance
in the last episode. Mercifully G1980 lasted but one season.

I know there's a '70s revival going on, but this is ridiculous!

What next? Gil Gerard reprising his role as Buck Rogers, with that
annoying little robot thing with the horrible voice?

Buck Rogers, found floating adrift in a cryogenic state, is picked
up by James T. Kirk in the Starship Enterprise. They then encounter a
huge half-destroyed artificial satellite called, quaintly, the 'Death
Star'. An immense explosion catapults the Enterprise through space-time
where they end up at the other end of the Deep Space 9 worm hole.
After docking, and meeting with the Jean-Luc and the new Enterprise,
the whole station is attacked by the fleeing Battlestar Galactica crew,
believe it a new enemy station. After their differences are resolved,
a lone tie-fighter comes through the worm hole carrying Luke S. and
R2-D2 ( they were caught in the tail end of the explosion at the Death
Star ). Just when all the ships are docked at the station, a visting
ship's officer named Ripley reports an outbreak of a paticular virulent
type of alien predator. Ripley leads an assault team through the station
with the help of Odo and Starbuck. Just then, a huge mining ship,
named Red Dwarf appears from the wormhole, wildly out of control, and
wipes out the entire station. End of story.

1136.29The public wants comprehensible spectacleTLE::JBISHOPMon Apr 26 1993 12:0114
Remember, there are two genres: SF, which has a small audience
and requires a love of consistency and some knowledge of science,
and Sci Fi, which uses stock figures and situations to give color
    to hackneyed action-adventure plots.

The public pays for Sci Fi movies. SF movies don't make as much
money, so movie makers don't like making them.

Movies are short fiction--more like short stories than novels.
They don't have time to get into complicated background details.
SF is largely based on such details. Sci Fi uses already-known
    details (Empires, spaceships, robots, etc.).

Doctor Who was made into at least one movie. I have this murky
recollection of something like "Daleks Invasion of Earth". It was set
in the "near future" - 1975? Production values about the same as the
TV series(es). I think there might have been one about Cybermen as
well, but I'm not at all sure.

The BBC also edited together blocks of episodes into hour-long specials
(maybe longer), but I don't think any of those saw cinema release...8*)

    Re .31

There were two Doctor Who movies made in the sixties, starring Peter
Cushing. Both were based on stories from the first season. One was 'Dr
Who and the Daleks', and the other was 'Invasion of Earth'?, also with
the Daleks, set in 2025 I think. Production values were a lot higher
than those of the TV series at the time, e.g. they were in colour. The
TV series versions were better overall, though. The first Dalek story
is one of the best SF TV shows I have ever seen, even though I didn't
see it till many years later. The second was a lot weaker though, it
relied on the shock of seeing the 'monsters' in familar places (London)
    and that doesn't work anymore.

The BBC must have kept some rights to the films - they used to show them
    everytime Wimbledon was rained off.

Actually, Frank Herbert noted in the introduction to his
short story collection _EYE_ that there were about 12 hours of
raw footage that was edited down to the movie version of DUNE,
and that this footage _could_ be reedited and filled out to make
a miniseries. If I recall right, there was much more background
(so the voiceover wouldn't be needed) and a lot more on the
minor characters. Might be almost tolerable.

(How about Bruce Willis and Arnie Schartzeneger costaring in a

Amber, my all time favs. I wouldn't want to see a movie done unless it
was done right. Gor is another favorite, but the movies BLEW!!!! :')

Actually, I had in mind a miniseries, sort of along the lines
of Masterpiece Theatre. 'Course, each episode would have to begin
with about a half hour of plot exposition, "...but Bleys thought
that Fionna knew that Random had really told Corwin that Dworkin
and the Unicorn who was really their grandfather could have..."

(_GOR_ as a movie? The mind REELS!)

isn't that afterall how the book went ? 8-)

What were the movies and which books were they based on ?

Also are you refering to the Gor novels by John Norman ?
I would think if they are it would be X-rated.

re: Amber

You could do a movie just based on "Guns of Avalon" which would
have enough blood & guts for Hollywood.

1136.52*VERY* loosely based on the 1st book.KDX200::ROBRPhantasmagorical!!! - (Daffy)Thu May 06 1993 18:4245

I am referring to John Norman's Gor (actually this is the wrong note
    for this topic line, but...)

The first movie is just called:

    GOR

    starring:
    Urbano Barberini
    Rebecca Ferratti
    Jack Palance
    Paul L. Smith and
    Oliver Reed

Students at a tiny New Hampshire college aren't the only ones who think
eternity is the few minutes just before vacation (in the books he was a
professor in Bristol, England). Professor Tarl Cabot already has his
bags packed, his girlfriend waiting and a great gone-fishing
destination in mind. But a vacation isn't what other-worldly forces
have in mind for Tarl. They know he's one of the chosen few, a man who
will be hurled across time and space into the wartorn strife of the
primitive counter-earth called Gor - and into the adventure of a
    thousand lifetimes.

The sword-and-sorcery sci-fi world of novelist John Norman now comes to
the screen in this fast-paced adaption directed by Fritz Kiercsh
(Children of the Corn) and filmed in stark, sand-swept locales that
recreate the parched planet's forbidding terrain.

Urbano Barberini, a star in Franco Zeffirelli's classic operatic film
Otello, plunges into the action film world as Tarl, the bookish
professor-turned-sword-wielding liberator. Fighting alongside Tarl is
the passionate woman warrior Talena, played by former Playboy playmate
Rebecca Ferratti. And Oliver Reed (Oliver!, The Three Musketeers) as
the brutish enslaver Sarm and Jack Palance (Shane) as the cunning
Priest King are the kind of hiss-inspiring villians audiences love to
    hate.

Join Tarl's incredible adventure. Leave the everyday behind and
journey to the far-off land where heroes are made and legends are born:
    Gor.

FWIW, I don't recall the name of the second movie (it was sitting on
the shelf when I bought this one, but I figured I'd see how good the
first one was - it didn't inspire me to run out any buy the sequel :')
    - I THINK it was either Outlaw of Gor or Priest-Kings of Gor).

you don't actually think priest-kings are ants in this adaptation of
the novel, do you??? (then again, if you recall, we don't find that
out until PKofG anyway. Men represented false PK's).

Not really. I just rather liked the notion of him clopping around in a
    Doctor Who-surplus man-sized ant costume...

    - update:

I read an interview with Richard Hatch (Apollo) - apparently they are
doing a remake for the Science fiction network. Don't know if it's
going to be a movie or a series though.
I for one enjoyed the show. I just got the movies from the
Video club ( the original pilot and Mission Galactica:Ceylon Attack ).
