| OK. I reviewed notes 209, 266, 500, 569, and 878.
Now, let me restate my question: does anyone know what has happened to
Harlan Ellison? I haven't seen anything from him in years.

*WHERE* did you here that? I've seen nothing about that mentioned
anywhere. It would take a *lot* for Ellison to work in television
again.
As for Ellison, he's still around, plugging away, doing a short
story here, a article there. He's still got his semi-regular film
review column in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION.

| I was simply implying that you could have posted your question
in any of those Ellison Topics (particularly 878) and your question
still would have been read and answered. NEXT UNSEEN allows this
to happen.

Where? I cover the bookstores pretty thoroughly and I cannot remember
the last thing I saw by Ellison since "Jeffty is Five" (admittedly one
of the all-time great short stories).

| Since "Jeffty Is Five"??? That was published in F&SF back in 1977.
Since then, he's had at least two short story collections published
-- STALKING THE NIGHTMARE and ANGRY CANDY -- as well as at least two
books of essays -- HARLAN ELLISON'S WATCHING (a collection of his
F&SF film reviews) and another the title of which I can't think of
at the moment -- plus one collection of mixed fiction and essays,
THE ESSENTIAL ELLISON. This last was originally from a small press
publisher, but I just saw a huge trade paperback edition in Waldenbooks
the other day.
And he's published short fiction here and there, though mostly in the
small press magazines like ABORIGINAL SF and PULPHOUSE.

| I recall reading Asimov talking about Ellison, likely in one of his
editorials in IASFM, maybe a couple of years ago.
Asimov said that Ellison had written a number of film scripts (6 or
so), each for more and more money, and none had been turned into
movies.
Now, Asimov likes to goad other writers in fun (particularly Arthur C.
Clarke), and I think to some degree he was doing that. But the thrust
of the article was that this was a tragic waste of Ellison's formidable
talent, despite the profit.
If all this is true, does explain at least partly where Ellison has
been in recent years.

the conditions he sets for them to be produced? Does he insist on
total control of any changes? 'Artistic control'? Etc. The
producers may simply want to buy the scripts without ever hearing
from the writer again.

Are you implying that Harlan Ellison might not be the easiest person
with whom to strike an agreement? Heavens, what a thought.
Harlan, as we know, is Mr. Nice Guy, Mr. Steady-as-she-goes, a real
concensus sort of guy, always in the emotional middle ground...
What does the Kink's song say? "Doing the best things so
conservatively." Ah yes, that's him.

Harlan recovering from quadruple-bypass
Harlan suffered what his wife Susan thinks was a heart attack Friday
evening. He was rushed to Cedar-Sinai Hospital where a quadruple-bypass
operation was performed Sunday afternoon April 14th.
As of this afternoon HE was recovering well and was expected home
possibly as early as next Saturday.
