-< STAR TREK >- ================================================================================ Note 382.49 STAR TREK VI Rumors 49 of 93 AKOCOA::HILL 114 lines 20-NOV-1990 00:22 -< It's official ! " Star Trek VI " is on the way ! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, you've been earing rumors about it for months now, but official word just came off of the Paramount lot. " Star Trek VI " is on the way ! The following article appeared in the November 19, 1990 edition of " Variety " magazine ( The weekly, NOT the daily edition ) on page 4. It is reprinted here without permission : FINAL ' STAR TREK ' TO ROLL IN SPRING Love finds Spock, says writer-director of 'VI' By Will Tusher HOLLYWOOD -- Paramount is wheeling " Star Trek VI, " avowedly the last in the theatrical series, onto the launching pad as the capper of the 1991 celebration of " Star Trek's " 25th anniversary. Nicholas Meyer, who just finished directing MGM's tentatively titled " Dinosaurs, " with Gene Hackman and Mkhail Baryshnikov in London, will write and direct the film. Meyer has turned in his first draft. He directed " Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan, " released in 1982, and co-wrote 1986's " Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home." Reached in London, Meyer offered only a clue to the storyline of the sixth feature : Spock falls in love. Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, George Takei and other cast regulars have been asked to stand by for a possible February start, but Meyer said shooting now is not likely to begin before April. Ralph Winter, who produced " Star Trek V : The Final Frontier, " is expected to reprise on the new one. " I have every intention of being involved, " Nimoy said. " I will not be directing, but I will be there to act ... I think it will be a wonderful way to finish our films with a flourish because 1991 is the 25th anniversary of the tv show. The intention is to really do a grand-exit movie for the original group. " Harve Bennett, the executive producer and sometimes writer of the theatrical series, no longer is on the Paramount lot because of creative differences over the best way for " Star Trek " to say its cinematic goodbyes. His concept was embodied in a David Loughery screenplay that would have been a prequel, revealing how the Enterprise crew came together -- with younger actors playing the now familiar roles, intercut with flash forwards to other films in the series. While Sid Ganis was co-president in charge of production, Paramount flirted for a year with the Bennett / Loughery scenario ( titled " Star Trek VI : The First Adventure " ), but decided against it. Bennett then left the project. ----------------------------- 30 -------------------------------------- Okay, that's the official word. If you doubt what you've read here, pick up a copy of this week's " Variety " and see for yourself. However, there is additional un-official word leaking off the Paramount lot regarding the script under consideration : * Yes, the lady that Spock has lost his heart to is someone we've seen before. We met her first in " Star Trek II " and last saw her on the plains of Vulcan along with Spock's mom in " Star Trek IV. " That's right, it's everybody's favorite vulcan / romulan, Lieutenant Savvik. No word yet as to who'll play this pointy eared beauty, but rumor has it that Meyer wants Kristie Alley to play the part again ! ( Robin Curtis is going to be pissed ! ) * On the other hand, " Star Trek - The Next Generation " fans will be pleased to hear that there will be a wedding at the end of the film and a certain young lieutenant with a receding hairline will be making a cameo appearance. That's right, just like they said in last season's " Sarek " episode, a very young Jean Luc Picard will attend the wedding. And -- in the current version of the script -- there is a short bit of significant interaction between Kirk and Picard. Let's hope this scene makes it into the final cut of the film. And -- finally -- don't buy into this " avowedly the last of the theatrical series " nonsense Paramount's spewing. It's well known around Hollywood that the studio has the members of the original cast under contract for * TWO * more films. This means that -- should " Star Trek VI " soar at the box office -- " Star Trek VII : The Absolutely final, we-really-mean-it-this-time Voyage " will not be too far behind. And directly behind that will be the first " Star Trek : The Next Generation " feature film. So there's still plenty of cinematic " Trek " on the way. The anticipated release date right now is somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas 1991. Should this one succeed, you can expect " Star Trek VII " to appear in the summer of 1993. And -- after the syndicated " Star Trek : The Next Generation " tv series ends production in the spring of 1994 ( The entire cast -- including Wil Wheaton -- are contractually obligated to appear in six seasons worth of shows, which would mean the series would have to wrap up in 1993. However, Paramount has the option of extending these contracts for one additional year if they choose to. And -- right now -- given the tremendous profits they're reaping from " Star Trek : The Next Generation, " the studio fully intends to exercise that option and is already negotiating with members of the cast regarding the additional year of production. So we should expect fresh " Trek " on TV through the spring of 1994 ), the current tv cast is expected to begin making " Star Trek : The Next Generation " theatrical films. If all goes well, we might see the first one of those around Christmas 1995. Any comments ? Hope this news makes all you DEC " Trek " fans happy. Robespierre

From: [email protected] (James V. Tedeschi) Newsgroups: rec.arts.startrek.info Subject: Latest Information about Star Trek VI Summary: It's a GO! Date: 19 Feb 91 19:09:15 GMT Sender: [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] (James V. Tedeschi) Organization: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY Approved: [email protected] Latest information from Richard Arnold at the Creation Con over the weekend (2/16 - 2/17) in New York City about the fate of Star Trek VI: (Richard Arnold is the Star Trek Info Handler for Paramount.) Not much has happened in the last few weeks, script revisions had been going slow, and the fate of the movie was in serious doubt. As of Friday, 5pm from California,, the fate of the movie is, IT'S a GO! All doubt is over, the movie WILL be made, a budget has been approved and filming will begin in the early weeks of April for a 9 month production schedule. The release dat of Thanksgiving is gone, at the earliest would be Christmas '91,but early February is much more likely. As for cast assignments and contracts, be ready for a slew of rumors about so and so not signing and may not appear in the film, but Richard stated that these rumors appeared for all the films, and Paramount has never failed to get the cast signed aboard... so don't take any too seriously. Richard also said what we already know, Nicholas Meyers is directing, producing and writing the script, etc... And now a minor spoiler about one of the characters outcomes in STVI: Sulu finally gets command of his own ship. (Hurray.) I hope this information has been of some use to you all, send email for flames, questions, etc to Jamie Tedeschi [email protected] Standard disclaimers apply. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: [email protected] (Michael Rosen) Newsgroups: rec.arts.startrek.info Subject: Star Trek VI and Michael Dorn Keywords: Creation Con, Worf's father Date: 19 Feb 91 19:44:24 GMT Sender: [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] I went to a Star Trek convention last weekend, believe me, it was the last one too. It was a Creation convention, which I've heard aren't that good. I wasn't happy that I paid money to be let into a room with all these people hawking their wares, trying to get me to spend more money. Some of the presentations were ok, seeing some previews and hearing about upcoming TNG episodes was worth it, but I won't be going to another one too soon. The following bit of information was quite interesting though: They are negotiating with Michael Dorn to play Worf's real father in Star Trek VI. That should be really interesting. Otherwise, there really wasn't much new information on the movie. James Doohan just told us that they were playing the old game, where the actors hold out and wait for the right offer from Paramount, etc. I think I read (was it here?) that ILM will be doing the FX this time... Approved: [email protected] According to Shatner at last weekend's Creation Con in NYC, STVI is definitely going to happen, and it will almost definitely be the last one because "some of the cast can't find the set anymore." He also said that no one gets killed off, and that when he read the story, the ending made him cry.
