135.0. "SF or F: the debate" by ERIE::ASANKAR () Tue Sep 11 1984 18:43

		Is this file for Sf only? Not really is what I say.
	But what should this file contain? Obviously, many SF fans
	have other interests, like westerns, classics, and a lot of
	fantasy. I just replied to a note that reccomended Jungle
	Book. Sure it's good, but can/should we talk about it. There
	is a Books file somewhere around, is that where we should go?

				I dunno

Well, as far as I am concerned, this notefile is for sf/fantasy/horror/etc.
only (what is often referred to in general as "Fantastic Literature"). There
is a BOOKS.NOT that can be used for other genres of fiction.
	Occasionally, though, there is some discussion of books/movies/what-
ever that are only marginally sf (or non-sf, as far as some people are con-
cerned). THE JUNGLE BOOK is a perfect example. It certainly has elements of
fantasy in it, but a lot of people would never think of it as fantasy.
It all depends on your point of view. Some people think that the Tarzan
novels aren't fantasy, some do. Some don't think that the Indiana Jones
movies are fantasy, some do. Because most people draw their own lines about
what is and what isn't sf/fantasy, there are bound to be arguments of this
type.
	As long as a book or a movie has *some* fantastic element in it, *I*
consider it fantasy, and feel that a discussion of it has a place in this
notesfile. Otherwise, it might as well go in BOOKS.NOT (or MOVIES.NOT, TV.NOT,
or whatever).

Just for the record:

	ASYLUM""::SYS$NOTES:BOOKS
	BISON""::USER$:[PRIBORSKY.PUBLIC]MOVIES
	BISON""::USER$:[PRIBORSKY.PUBLIC]TV

I also have set up a Doctor Who notes file:

	NACHO""::SYS$USERSET:[LYNCH.DRWHO]DRWHO

I'm sure any literary discussions would be welcome in BOOKS. The action has
been a little light there.

Yeah, MOVIES and TV are a bit sparse, too, which is why I tend to
discuss sf movies or tv shows in those files rather than SF (at
least, I'll start discussions there; if someone else starts a
discussion here, I will respond). It doesn't seem quite right to
discuss sf books in BOOKS, though, otherwise there'd be nothing
left for this file.

Another point: The SF or F to someone not yet reading the note would
omply to one in the genre you are asking "Science Fiction or Fantasy?"
rather than "Science Fiction or Fiction."
