| The first book definitely is; in my opinion, it's one of the three best sf
novels ever written. Most folks would quibble on the rest. Myself, I rather
liked DUNE MESSIAH, though admittedly, after reading DUNE, anything would
seem to be not up to snuff. CHILDREN OF DUNE was ok. I haven't read the
last two, though I've heard nothing but positive response to the latest,
HERETICS OF DUNE.

| I think it is just people who don't know enough to use the DELETE command.
It happens a lot. Best thing to do is to send the person mail asking him or
her to delete the entry. When you reply (as I am doing...) it makes the
offending reply undeletable unless everyone can get coordinated enough to
delete their entries working back.

| Some times the blank replies mean "NO COMMENT" with heavy sarcasm.
I used to think that Herbert got tired of DUNE and took a short cut in
using the bombs to blow away the barrier at the end of DUNE. Recently, I have
come to realize that Paul was not the hero the people thought he was and
betrayed the ecology of DUNE to his own pursuit of power.
(The spelling checker in recent versions of NOTES$EDIT is a great
help.)

| RE: -.1
I am not sure I can agree with your comment about Paul. I think
there are many passages in the book that show Paul was not in complete
control of the destiny of Arrakis. Many times he sensed events rushing
up on him, and couldn't do anything about it. I believe there is a
valid question about whether or not Paul really knew what he was doing,
at least in terms of the ecology of Arrakis, but I really can't believe
that he was consciously seeking power to the exclusion of all else.

The blank replies exist when someone begins to make a reply, but then
the net crashes before they finish. This leaves an empty reply, and
there's no way to get to the node to do a delete afterward.
I'm not so sure heavy sarcasm is implied.

134.18 | Swap: paperback for hard cover | AMULET::FARRINGTON | statistically anomalous | Thu Jun 18 1987 16:57 | 15 |
| So this particular note is pushing 3 years old. Didn't seem worth
starting a new note.
I have just finished reading CHAPTERHOUSE:DUNE; a hard cover version
that I was able to pick up for $2.98. While that was a great price,
and it was nice to be able to handle a hard cover, this size book
just does not fit my library of SF (2 or 3 boxes under the bed).
Anybody care to swap a reasonably unmutilated paperback version
for the read_once_only_with_no_drools hard back copy ?
Send me an E-mail message or phone; I'll delete this note when swapped
or, if I can't do that, post it gone.

| Last time I looked, CHAPTERHOUSE:DUNE was just coming out in a trade
paperback edition (still larger than you probably want), and was
not yet out in mass market paperback. You may have to wait a while
before you can make that trade. Further, I'll bet the paperback
version will run at least $4.95, and so will sell for more than
$2.98 used. Good luck in finding a trade.

| I did not realize a paperback version had not been released.
And yes, I had considered the price differential; one of the reasons
I purchased the hard cover book was that the price would probably
be lower than the paperback (that I thought was available).
My offer to swap was directed to those potential Dune fans who would
perhaps like to flesh out that hard cover Dune library, but did
not wish to pay those typical prices. Not looking for any deals,
it's just that I was hoping to obtain a smaller version for long
term storage...
Oh well, maybe a quick donation to the public library and wait for
the mass market paperback.

134.23 | Mea culpa | TALLIS::SIGEL | | Mon Jun 22 1987 09:55 | 12 |
| My apologies for claiming it would be months before the
mass market paperback would be out. My only excuse is that
they usually take over a year between trade paperback and
mass market, and the trade paperback has only been out
since last October. I guess they wanted to start out the
"new" Ace sf paperback line with a bang (I say "new" because
it now combines the Ace and Berkley lines (no more new Berkley
sf, folks) into one), and the last Dune novel is about as big
a bang as you can make these days.

Has any one noticed that, if you open the paperbacks and lay them

make one picture, except for Chapter house!
