70.0. "Doctor Who Fan Club of America (DWFCA)" by NACHO::LYNCH () Thu May 10 1984 10:17
I just received my membership in the Doctor Who Fan Club of America.
Anyone else who is interested should send $5 for a one-year membership
to:
The Doctor Who Fan Club of America
P.O. Box 6024
Cherry Creek Station
Denver, CO
80206
For your money, you get copies of their quarterly newsletter, the "Whovian
Times", a cute DWFCA button, a chance to win a trip to England to visit
the Doctor Who filming, and the satisfaction of supporting this organization
which promotes the Doctor's cause in the U.S. There are also local Clubs
around the country (anyone know of one in New England?).
The DWFCA also assists PBS stations in using the Doctor to raise money
for the stations.
This issue of the "Times" has a very nice cover picture of the newest Doctor,
Colin Baker. He looks like a cross between Tom Baker and Peter Davison.
Producer John Nathan-Turner is quoted as saying, "...he will definitely be
a more eccentric Doctor than Peter Davison. A more vociferous character,
loud almost to the point of occasionally being vulgar, a sharp-edged wit.
His clothes will be tasteless -- tasteless in color, style, patterns, etc."
(The cover picture tends to bear this statement out!!).
Baker is quoted, "Get rid of the scarves, for I AM the Doctor".
I have put some trivia questions from this issue in the TRIVIA NOTES file.
If you want to see this issue, stop by my office (ZKO2-1 office 1M05) if you
can.
BTW, the DWFCA also sponsors Doctor Who conventions in the U.S. There is a
lot of info on the "Ultimate Celebration" held in Chicago a while back.

Another couple things...
The "Times" also has a lot of ads for Doctor Who garbage like T-shirts,
buttons, jewelry, stuffed K-9's, etc.
One of the good things advertised is the "Doctor Who Monthly" magazine
($25/year) and the BBC's "Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special Magazine"
($4.95 + $1.50 shipping). The "Special" is also available through some
book stores. I bought a copy while I was on vacation and promptly left it
behind at my Mother's house in Pennsylvania (sigh!).
Merchandise can be ordered through the same address as noted above.

Last thing (I hope!)...
One of the good things in the "20th Anniversary Special Magazine" is a
summary of the new year's episodes, including when the Doctor regenerates
(a first...in the next-to-last series of episodes, so that we here in
New Hampshire will see the new Doctor when Channel 11 shows Davison's
last season in the fall (YEAH!!)), when Tegan leaves (that'll make some
people happy), when Turlough leaves (and they promise to explain WHO he
is!), and a little bit about the new companion (she's an American, that's
a first also!).
If someone has a copy of that magazine, they should post the episode summary
(as I planned on doing if I hadn't left it behind).
