3028.0. "Secret Service MTB" by WMOIS::WEIER (Keep those wings spinning!) Tue Oct 10 1995 09:40

WASHINGTON (AP) - Secret Service Sgt. Doug Tuxbury patrols his
White House beat from the seat of a sleek mountian bike.
In a silver helmet, black combat gear and comfortable shoes,
Tuxbury spends his shift atop a $2,400 TREK two-wheeler cruising the
three block radius of the White House compound.
The Secret Service launched its latest beat Saturday. By the end
of the day, Tuxbury said, he was hoarse from talking to so many
    people about the bike.
The space age white bike with black wheels has 24 gears, a Secret
Service seal inthe middle of the frame, a black handlebag with the
tools of the trade inside - which he refused to discuss - and a
mid-frame shock absorber for off-road pursuits.
The bike officers trained for a week, learning how to shoot and
tackle from the bike. They also went on a 40-mile, fast paced trip in
    stormy conditions.
The kids who know bikes - who live in bike shops - stop and say,
"Hey, thats the new wide-frame!' " Tuxbury told a reporter.
And while Columbus Day brought hundreds of tourists, bikers and
in-line skaters flocking to the avenue on a sunny afternoon, Tuxbury
said he knows a cold winter lies ahead.
"We'll ride in rain and cold, but not in sleet." he said. We're
    not the post office.

$2400 MTB ! Our taxpayer dollars at play. The secret service will
probably spend most of their time guarding their expensive and
desirable 2 wheeled toys. Maybe they should slap HUFFY labels on
    the frame.
3028.2WMOIS::GIROUARD_CTue Oct 10 1995 12:499
I'm sure they're talking about the "Y" frame, not the "wide-frame."

Only $2400.00? That's retail! I'm surprised that TREK didn't add on
another $3k-$5k just because it was the gov't.

I don't know what these guys will be doing, but that's an awful lot of
bike to be riding on grass and jumping curbs...

The Nashua, NH police are "getting by" on $1000 Treks. I guess
the terrain around Nashua isn't as rugged as the grounds around the
    White house! :)

hey, maybe carbon fiber is more bullet-proof than chromoly! :-)

Shoot and tackle from the bike!?! Sounds like a new event for the Mt. Wachusett
rides!

Hey, does anyone know if radar picks up carbon fiber? :-)

Radar doesn't even pick up aluminum. I actually asked a cop once when I flew
through his speed trap on the bike. He said it would never register me.

That's funny the cop said that, it should register your body moving
by. A couple of years ago, we had a day at the mountain skiing, and
they had a gun there and registered our speed. It worked... so it
should work if there is a person on the bike too.

I regularly get my speed called out to me by Bolton cops set up
in a speed trap on Forbush Mill Rd on both the aluminum and carbon
Trek road bikes. They're pretty accurate too; exactly what my
    Avocet 50 says.

And you wondered how they calibrated those radar guns... ;-)

Aluminum shouldn't be a problem for any radar system given the majority
of WWII planes were largely constructed of it and were getting picked up
    by some very rudimentary equipment.
