| Don't be so modest, John, you deserve your own farewell note. Although I'm
sure all bike noters will agree when I say that I wish it weren't necessary.
This is sad news.

I hate this phrase, but it's true... This conference won't be the
same...
If you manage to find a job on the net, then you'll need to create a
RAAM distribution list to keep us all informed on your progress. Our
support will still be there...
Still at least you won't have moaning Scotsmen grumbling about the
weather and the price of toe straps...
Good luck, John,
Graham.

| We're going to miss your experience and advice, and *humor* in here!
If you're ever in the area, be sure to let someone (Ed?) know, and
maybe we can all have a "John Lee Ellis Goober Ride" (i.e., it'll
likely be a Goober ride for you, but not for us mere humans).
And thanks for taking the time in the bitter cold of February to check
out my position on my bike: the new stem has helped immensely.
You'll be missed,
Sue

This place won't be the same without you.
May the wind be at your back and the sun always shine up you.

BTW, Chris' note was 1748. But, in keeping with long standing
Bike notes tradition, there is no reason why you should not have
your own goodbye note.

Hope you find a job that allows the kind of freedom to ride
that you've become accustomed to.
Take care and keep in touch and let me know if you plan on
doing RAAM '93.

it's not difficult to get to know something about a person through
the past dialogue in here.
All the best and much luck to you...

| This is pretty sad, for a couple of reasons. If he doesn't find
another job inside then Digital has lost one fine engineer. We
lose his expertise. We also lose a fairly immediate means of
communicating with him. Oh, sure, I have his phone number and
address in Charlotte, but the net sure makes things better.
As John said, maybe he'll be on the Internet.
I "met" John through this notesfile. Since he lives in Charlotte,
NC, and my brother-in-law lived in Charlotte, I made arrangements
back in 1990 to meet (and possibly ride) with John. An extended
vacation to Japan caused us to miss each other. In retrospect,
that was not all bad. I would have met him sooner, but I would
have probably tried to ride with him. Too strenuous for me and
too boring for him.
The timing worked out well, though, as he was planning and
preparing for RAAM '91. I became part of the crew and got to
spend some "quality" time with him.
We've exchanged hundreds of mail messages, and have eaten together
a couple of times.
John is one of the nicest and most pleasant people I've ever met.
I guess I'll have to join UMCA to keep up on his whereabouts.

Sorry to hear that you're leaving, John. We'll all miss your
unfailingly knowledgeable and entertaining contributions to this file.
The first time I met John was back in ~1985/6 in Reading, when we both
worked on ALL-IN-1. John had come over from Charlotte with his bike,
and the airline had partially wrecked it in transit. In talking about
this amongst ourselves, someone was surprised that John was so upset,
as it was "only a bike".
If only we'd known...

Best of luck. Even though we never met or even noted directly, I feel
that I've gained a great deal of knowledge from you by reading your
notes. I'll miss the great contribution that you've made to this
conference.

Thanks, all. Re: Nigel & Ken - All these years, the UK and New England
seemed so close - now they're suddenly much farther away. But old habits
don't die so easily. I may yet make my way round to NH and England (and,
suitably fortified, even to Scotland :-)) as circumstances permit.
I'll let you know. Nigel, you should get some crazies to do the
Lambourn-Hungerford Century!

Let me add my voice to those already here. I am very sorry we won't get a
chance to see you again. Of course, you never know. Let me also add that I too
am out of this company as of the end of September. The joys of the new Digital.
So, John, farewell for now. Who knows where we will meet again?

Thank you for giving us a glimpse of a world that many of us will
never experience. At the same time, you've helped debunk the myth that
is found in many sports, i.e those that populate the extremes of the
sport envelope, are some sort of militant, fanatics.
The best to you and everyone in your group,
