| The latest VeloNews contains an article about Paul Solon
setting an outdoor track record for 24-hours. I thought
that was pretty interesting. The next article in the mag
was even more interesting and, I must say, a little hard
to believe (even for me, the April Fool fool 8-)> ).
Seana Hogan rode from San Francisco to Los Angeles. In so
doing, she broke every existing record for the ride. She
broke the following records:
Male solo
Female solo
Men's tandem
Mixed tandem
2-Man team
As I said, this is a little hard to believe. Anyway, Ms. Hogan
is supposed to ride RAAM this year and has asked John Marino
if she can start with the men.
John Lee, can you confirm or deny this ride by Ms. Hogan. I'd
like to know if she had a BIG tail wind or what.

Hi Scott,
Interesting indeed! I can't give any further confirmation - I think
the account I read was someone in CYCLE_RACING.NOTE quoting the
VeloNews article. It seems incredible to me. Maybe conditions
were more favorable for Seana Hogan than for Paul Solon (I'm sure
we'll find out - I'll try to get some details from the UMCA guys)
but it would be a feat for anyone, male or female, to best someone
of Solon's level.
Does S. Hogan want to compete in the RAAM Men's Division or just
start with them? (I presume the former.)

Solon had a mixture of light winds, no big headwinds, no big
tailwinds.

California Bicyclist reports that Paul Solon, RAAM record holder set a
new 24 hour record on May 10 in San Jose, CA. He rode 509.29 miles on the
Hellyer Park Velodrome's outdoor 333 yard track. The old mark was
502.3 by Jim Elliot--generally credited as the inventor of aero
bars--in 1984.
During most of the ride Solon was on pace to break Michael Secrest's
indoor record of 516.25 miles before fading. "There are no downhills,
no stop signs, no chance to change position. It's just an awful
record. Awful."
Solon remarked that during his ride he was haunted by the specter of
Shauna Hogan, who lives in San Jose and who just broke his S.F.-L.A.
record. "I kept worrying that she would ride out to the track and
start riding circles around me, saying things like 'Is that all the
faster you go?'".
Hogan, 32, is a single mother who works full time for IBM as a
programmer. On April 18 she blazed a 401 mile course from S.F.-L.A. in
19:59 breaking the old women's record 29:23, Paul's record 20:40, the
men's tamdem record, mixed tandem record and the two man drafting
record. In fact she broke all S.F.-L.A. records set on conventional
bicycles! Now her sights are set on RAAM.

| No idea on what Ms. Hogan's plans are. VeloNews didn't say.
This should add an interesting twist to this year's race
regardless.
