2106.0. "Shimano XTR - new top-line ATB group" by RUTILE::MACFADYEN () Wed Oct 09 1991 04:50

Received some bumf from Freewheel the other day and among things it talks
about a new top-line ATB component group from Shimano. What it says is:

"Shimano XTR - the lightest Shimano off-road group, featuring the new 8-speed
cassette system, and improved shift performance from Rapidfire Plus double
finger shifting system.

"Special attention was given to the front gear change, leading to the concept
of a new concept of shift performance - SHD - Shimano Hyper Drive. The result
is a light, super smooth and fast gear change. With SHD, the crankset and
chainrings are redesigned and mounted onto a cartridge bottom bracket for
improved performance and durability.

"First deliveries are expected for November 91."

There you go. Some new toys to spend yer money on.

Suntour's Microdrive- supposed to be the lightest MTB drive train
    available.

The big '92 bike show just finished up in Cal a week or so ago.

Prepare yourself for the marketing onslaught...

The EUROBIKE 91 trade fair just finished (in Friedrichshafen,
Swiss/German border). All the major companies showed their '92 stuff.

Shimanos XTR with special hooks on the chainrings to provide faster and
smoother chain "lifting". The rear rings have holes (lighter!) and are
mounted on a alu "spider arm". I heard the XTR group is supposed to be
about twice the price of the XT.... nice toy....

Campa and Suntour go for the new small "Micro-Drive"/"Compact-Drive".
The Suntour XC Pro MD group is about 250 gramms lighter than the old XC
Pro: smaller chainrings - 20/32/42 at the front, 11-24 at the back,
shorter chain, very short rear derailleur cage...
Suntour has now a Hyperglide-like system called "Power-Flo". They also
    have a new underbar Y-shaped thumb/finger shifter.

The big EUROBIKE 91 trend for 92: Suspension bikes... from TREK,
SCOTT, MERLIN, SPECIALIZED, K2, Muddy Fox...

I heard bike prices in Europe will go up generally about 10% due to
high $ and Yen. But Cannondale will be about 10% cheaper: Now they
assemble their bikes in Europe which saves tax and freight costs.

    Felix.
    now in Europe as well.

I've been reading about the micro-drive stuff. If this is such
a good idea, why hasn't it been tried before? I'm not poo-pooing
the idea, but is there an engineer in the house that can describe
whether there are trade-offs to that idea ... e.g., more wear and
tear on smaller cogs? (I don't know, just guessing.)

Just as well, really. Their prices in the U.K. are already more than 10% higher
than most other bikes imported into the U.K.!

	e.g. Specialized Stumpjumper	$600	600
		Cannondale SM-700	$700	800

Can you guess which one I bought into the U.K. from the U.S.?

Still, the Cannondale idea sounds like a good one. Lots of car companies
started off doing the same sort of thing. Maybe we'll see bike companies
building factories around different parts of the world to get around import
restrictions? It sounds more like the world I want to live in.

One small pedal rotation for humankind.
