2089.0. "The Fender squeeze..." by CSSE32::SMITH (Reality, just a visible imagination?) Mon Sep 23 1991 21:04

I've been trying to find some fenders to fit my Puch Laser 12sp I ride
to work with little luck. I've looked at the Zefel and they are to
wide. I bought a set of SG's for a road bike but they lacked enough
clearance when mounted and the top of the tires rubbed at the brake
    mount.

I suspect my bike doesn't have enough clearance to mount any fender
known to mortal man. It seems between the small shimano brakes and the
narrow fork clearances fenders are not an option. Can anyone set me
straight here. What fenders do you have?

Here in the land of perpetual sunshine, we are astonished you need such a thing,
(I assume you really mean mudguards - ;%) the others are used to knock cars out
of the way, but then suit yourself....)

But I digress, in the mags here they advertise some disgusting looking things
which are about 20 mm wide and designed to fit all close clearance veloes, they
look to be as much use as a chocolate teapot but I'll look out the name and the
supplier.....
2089.2These are narrow.NOVA::FISHERRdb/VMS DinosaurTue Sep 24 1991 08:275
There's a really narrow, ahh, mudguard used by the randonneurs. It
really only stops the rooster tails so they can draft and pretend to be
gentlemen. Adventure Cylce in Raleigh, NC, is a US distributor.

Of course in snow you don't need `splash protection'....

The model to which Ed refers is French, so may be what Robin
scoffingly has seen. They do serve a purpose when riding on
wet roads with others. They are brushed alumin(i)um and look ok.

2089.5Yes, but what?IDEFIX::HEMMINGSLanterne RougeTue Sep 24 1991 12:018
Undoubtedly they do serve a purpose..

1. something to hang a reflector on?
2. something to atomise the water so that everyone gets a fair share?
3. something else to rattle and drive you crazy?
4. something to keep the water off? Oh no, you must be joking!

This was on wreck.bicycles last year (a rare instance of useful info among
the noise and flaming - one wonders if those people have any time to ride
their bikes, most of them have an opinion on everything.)

Also, I have Zefel narrow fenders on my Holdsworth. They would require some
trimming (with sheet metal snips) to fit my Vitus but probably could be
adapted. I've seen people who have done that so it must work.

What a great time to bring up the subject of fenders. I am doing a
ride next year that reequires fenders... and I plan to do it on my 46
cm vitus. Hmmm, now the rpoblem is to find fenders that will go on a
vitus. Fortunately, when in Framce a few years ago I noticed lots of
these really skinny fenders on vituses (viti). Anyway, a friend of
mine has started importing these *stealth* fenders in from France that
will fit on bikes without a lot of clearance. It took me quite a while
to mount them an adjust them properly but 500 miles later they are
working fine.

If you are interested (or are doing Paris-Brest-Paris next year) give
him a call at 919-834-RIDE (7433). His name is Gilbert Anderson and
the company is called Adventure Cycles. He actually carries lots of
other imported gadgets that are difficult or impossible to get here.
Be sure and use my name when you call so I can get a discount on my
next purchase.

I've gotten some interesting comments about the setup of my bike
recently - because it has fenders, but they look so sharp!
