1821.0. "Reading area bike, bikers?" by SHALOT::ELLIS (John Lee Ellis - assembly required) Mon Jan 14 1991 16:30

I plan to be in Reading for about a week, 5-14 February, including
a weekend. Is there anyone who:

o has a 52cm road bike that I might borrow?

o would like to do some miles at lunch or at the weekend?

    Thanks,
    -john

John,

Just to confirm, which Reading is this? I understand that there is a town on the
western side of the Atlantic by that name as well. However, I assume you mean
our dearly beloved Reading, U.K. I realise that the 3,500 miles between them
may not mean much to you, but we non-ultran-marathoners find them hard;
especially across water!

Anyway, I do have a road bike, but it is about 60 cm and lives 45 miles away.
However, with those caveats, you're welcome to use it. I work in Digital Park,
DTN: 830-4526, if you want further inforation.

Cheers, as they say,
Tim

John, are you building up for RAAM by crossing small countries first?

Before you assume the :-)'s its worth pointing out that there *is* a
difference (to do with which side the brakes are on)

That's true, slowing down seems so counterproductive. :-)

I once bought a bike (in Munich) that was cabled the other way
for brakes, and it always threw me for a loop, so to speak.

RE: Which Reading: Berks. Thanks for the offers. The 60cm sounds
like a bit of a stretch, but I will contact you in a pinch.

Re .4: Don't mention that. I started a note about that in here a year
or so ago and got accused of raising the most obscure and least
important issue ever aired in an important file like this.

I'll do some miles with you John - assuming you make it in Feb cos I
haven't yet got the funding for your trip (you are coming to do
the Time Managment transition - right?). Can't help you with the bike
    though.

You are correct, Mike, it's the TM transition. Well, when the
funding gets worked out, I'll be ready. And thanks for the offer
to ride - that will be fun.

    John,

Can't help directly with a bike but it *may* be possible to hire one,
although Reading is not noted for its cycle touring industry (or much
else, come to that). I will make a few inquiries and let you know.

Hi john,

I have an old faithful 501 that sits in the bike stands in DEC Park.
You are more than welcome to borrow it lunch times (as long as you're back
by the time I wanna go home!). I think its a 52cm frame (I've a 32" leg and it
fits me perfectly).

Nigel.

Nigel, that sounds perfect. And at this time of year, lunch
is about the only workday chance for a ride.

Of course Ed is right: 52cm's are rare enough, it's hard to pry me
loose. Ask my friend Pat, proud owner of a 52cm Allez. :-)

    Thanks,

This is sort of related. I'm unexpectedly spending this weekend (16,17
Feb) in Nashua. If the weather is any good (fat chance) I'd like to do
some miles. Can a local point me to a bike shop which would do a hire
just in case the weather is good. I'm in Spitbrook, Its the first time
I've been in the area so simple instructions would help.

    Hi Rod,

Hope you read this before the weekend. I doubt that
any shops in the area rent bikes, especially at this time
of year. You might want to send a mail message to Ed
Fisher (NOVA::??) since he lives close to ZKO and he has
a stable full of bicycles in various shapes and sizes
and it's been rumored that he's very generous with his
toys :) Hope you get some miles in.....I'll be skiing.

If you'll be back in town next week, I should be arriving in Reading

Forcast for this week, sun, darkness, sun, darkness, sun,.....you get
the point. Highs around 70, lows down to about 40. Bring your own
water with you though.
