1786.0. "Winter keep fit efforts...." by IDEFIX::HEMMINGS (Lanterne Rouge) Fri Nov 23 1990 08:48

As I write, the sky is blue, the temperature is 15 C and I can see the Med
shimmering round the bay to Nice.... What a pain it is to be in work on such
a day! Although the weather here is good all the winter, you can't win against
the Dark so...

I borrowed a velo d'appartement from a colleague. Those afficionadoes of
"Dallas" will recognise it as the actual machine used by Miss Ellie, - I don't
really know how she found time in between breakfasting in a gale on the terrace,
shooting JR and collecting her daughter-in-law from the local nick ("Swellen,
yo' drunk agin!").

It is OK, but BORING....... I am going through batteries on the Walkman so
well I expect to be offerred shares in Mallory - at least with old-fashioned
rollers you had to concentrate to avoid going off the side. 3 months of this
will send me off my head....

I have an aero seatpost, of course, and seeing it has feet itself you can get
away without the expense of an aero kickstand - just can't make up my mind about
a pair of Scott bars.........

I use videos of the Tour de France (40+ hours of live coverage) but
I'll need to get some headphones 'cos the TV has to be on *loud*

It is a shame to sit in the hottest spot in continental France
(except for the Kit Kat Klub in Frejus) with no chance to enjoy
    it during the week.

During my stay in Valbonne (Algo) in November & December '88,
I brought my bike to work, and at least some lunchtimes was
able to get in a strenuous hour's loop, more or less - you
can go clockwise up to Valbonne (Village), down to Biot, and
back up to Sophia Antipolis the back way. And with that route,
"only" an hour will give you all the exertion you want.

Plus which, you get the practice in banking around serpentines,
dodging potholes and Citroens, etc., that no trainer can give! :-)

1786.3Even with the showers next door....IDEFIX::HEMMINGSLanterne RougeMon Nov 26 1990 02:5012
Too right, I guess I am getting into the S of F paranoia where you stay indoors
when the sun goes in or the mercury goes below 10 C. Today it looks OK again
- (curses), and I have a busy work week in front of me.

We used to go out lunchtimes, and do the Valbonne - Biot loop or down to Grasse,
the trouble is that even with the showers I found it took until 3 pm to stop
steaming and leaking. I have just had to have the faithful velo re-enamelled
because the sweat had sent it rusty - I don't suppose Digital would do the same
for my workstation. Most people round here find jogging more convenient at
lunchtimes, it's only hour and requires less preparation.

" Work is the curse of the Cycling classes" (to plagiarise a bit...)
1786.42-3 hour lunch breaks of courseMOVIES::WIDDOWSONMon Nov 26 1990 04:159
When I was working in that region (admittedly for a French company) 2
hour lunch breaks were the norm and so you could manage 1 1/2 hours
with no problems and still be cooled down before being back in front
    of the W/S.

It was interesting tho' to come back into airconditioned chill
after 90 minutes of hard work in 90+(F) of heat....

If the only problem is darkness, you can put lights on your bike.
In the U.S. a good set of lights seem to run in the $100 to $200
range. The only part that would give you problems is the battery
charger, and I'm sure you can find a 6v battery charger.

See note 10.* on lights, get a better system than you think you
need, and keep commuting by bike.
