| My mistake, this is a 1990 bike. The guy just ordered his 1991 TREK.
He said the selling price new was $600. I looked up the computer
in a catalog, it only costs $30.

| $600 is the right price for a 1990 Trek 1200.
Why is he selling ? You should check for signs of a crash and/or
a bent frame (which can't be straightened sice it's aluminum).

| I bought an 88 1200 for $500 new. An 89 for $400, provided it hasn't been
abused, is a good deal, even sans computer. Since 88 they downgraded from
105 components, but they now now have hyperglide, and I've seen stock 89s
with clipless pedals and gel saddles now, both of which I had to pay to
upgrade. Mine has over 6k without any problems (at least that a cleaning
couldn't cure), it *is* easy to tear down and maintain, and it keeps up
with bikes costing a lot more. Should you need Trek support, there are
bike shops in Worcestor, Chelmsford, Belmont, and elsewhere that stock
spare parts. -kratz

| In January I was looking at the 1200s but I didn't notice if it was an
89 or 90 I assumed it was a 90. If it was (redish blue, like a purple
color) the demo bike was 450, or 465 with the jel seat.
The bike is a great bike, but you still have to ride and test it out.
It has to fit you and you have to be comfortable on it.
By the way this is New York, if that means anything.

| I got it on Saturday. It is a 1990 model with just over 100 miles
on it. The kid works in a bike shop as a mechanic and got it at
cost. Basically I picked it up for the same price he paid, $425
including a Vetta Innovator Cyclocomputer. There's not a scratch
on the bike.
It fits like a glove, I rode it twice this weekend - test ride
Saturday for 14 miles and 30 miles again on Sunday.
I'm real happy with it.......

| Suggestion (it'll cost about $200 if you don't have them already):
to get the most out of it, look into tossing on some clip on aero bars
and clipless pedals/Look-type shoes combo. But Christmas is coming.

| Well, my luck ran out... after almost 20,000 miles, my first semi
major problem with the 1200: the shift lever braze-ons "unbonded"
themselves from the aluminum downtube. Naturally, it happened with
a pretty good cadence and the cables and shifters proceeded to get
wrapped in the chain. Trek is supposed to send a new set of braze-on
clamps, the positioning bolt, and bonding goo. KB

This same thing happened to a friend of mine and he got
a new frame from Trek. I don't really think a field
repair will hold but if that is the option Trek gave
oh well.
BTW: He is trying to sell the Trek 1200, 60cm frame,
Shimano 600 setup with American Classic hubs.

mark.
