THE SPORT OF CYCLING
Is your bicycle more than a mode of transportation?
Maybe you like to go out for a Sunday afternoon ride, alone or with friends.
Maybe you want to be another Greg Lemond or Jeannie Longo. If you fit
somewhere within this range, chances are you've recognized that bicycle riding
is a sport -- a multiple-level one with offerings for almost everyone.
More than ever before, you'll find an abundance of sources of information and
organization that are practically on your doorstep. All you have to do is
know who to talk to, so the Wellness Center is offering a series of three
seminars on "The Sport of Cycling" to either help you get started or to add to
the knowledge you already have.
The lecture series consists of:
1. Introduction to Cycling as a Sport (Wednesday May 23, 12-1, Galileo ZK3-3)
In exploring cycling as a sport, employees engaged in these activities
will share information and experiences on the following:
o Alternatives to Racing with Ed Fisher (Granite State Wheelmen)
o Cycling Marathons with Kevin Klasman
o Road Racing with Justin Crocker
o Triathlon with Jim Pammer, ZKO Wellness Center Coordinator
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Common Cycling Injuries and Bicycle Position
(Wednesday May 30, 12-1, Whitehead CR, ZK1-1)
It was once calculated that a human on a bicycle could generate roughly
three horsepower. That makes the bicycle the most efficient commonly used
machine operated by human muscle. To ride with the most horsepower AND
with the greatest comfort, you need a good riding position, and there's a
lot more to position than just buying a bike that's the right size for you.
Scott Biron, Portsmouth Sports Medicine, will be presenting a device called the
"Fit-Kit", used to correctly adjust a rider to their bicycle. He will
also be covering common injuries (and treatment) that can occur from cycling
and incorrect cycling position.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Basic Bike Mechanics (Tuesday June 5, 12-1, Whitehead CF, ZK3-1)
A bicycle is a much simpler machine than a car -- so why not provide some
or all of the service yourself?
Guy Blancette, from Ultrasport in Manchester, NH will be discussing the basics
of bicycle repair. He will demonstrate some easy-to-do repairs that will keep
your bike safe and efficient.

Well, guess what? I went to the first lecture.
I didn't go the the second lecture.
I went to the third lecture. Uh, let me rephrase that; I
went to what I thought was to be the third lecture. I
see a cyclist in the ZK3 parking lot, mention the lecture,
and hear from him "It's been rescheduled."
I'm back now (obviously). Any, funny thing, I don't see any
mention of the rescheduling. I guess we just have to drive
to ZK3 and read the piece of paper scotch-taped to the wall.

| 1536.3 | ditto for me | RVNDEL::MCCARTHY | Tue Jun 05 1990 16:03 | 16 | |
I can relate!!! I talked 2 guys from here in Salem to take the trip (and give up their lunch) to go over to ZK and... I read the paper. They did use a nice color pink for the note though. It wasn't a total loss however, neither of the other 2 guys had ever been to ZK so they got to see (got spoiled actually) with how nice the facility is. FYI- Salem is a manufacturing site Alas, the rescheduled meeting conflicts with another meeting ( how dare they schedule work when a bike seminar is taking place) Kevin | |||||
| 1536.4 | It tough being one person | WECARE::PAMMER | Tue Jun 05 1990 17:03 | 37 | |
Sorry Guys....
The person had to cancell the morning of the seminar. Not much
I could do about it. He called at 10:00 and I didn't have much
time to get notices out everywhere.
I apologize, but I have a hard time doing 7 things at once.
The good news is that we have a larger conference room.

Jim,
I don't doubt you're a busy person.
What torqued me was that the lecture series was announced here,
and yet no announcement was made here about the rescheduling.
Anyone outside ZK has to look here for the status. This forum
is also more efficient that you having to answer 15 Mail messages
asking about status.

Scott,
Once again, I apologize. Now, I would like to know if I can pull
out the knife or would you like to give it one last twist ;-)
See you on the 12th,
Jim
