| Jim,
I watched and waited to see Paris-roubaix - but for the coverage
they did ; they wasted my time and to me; falsely advertised-
they show'd the mass start ; fignon bouncing over the cobble-stones
and then the sprint finish(woopee !)
last a few minutes..

1505.2 | Was that great coverage, or what? | TPWEST::SHROYER | | Mon Apr 23 1990 12:31 | 8 |
| I was out Saturday afternoon, so I taped the big race coverage. I
couldn't wait to get home and catch the thrilling action. Surely with an
American riding for 7 eleven doing so well, the coverage would be good. I
knew I'd have to watch some horse racing, boxing, bowling, lots of commercials
and maybe an interview or two, but over 90 minutes of Wide World of Sports
there had to be at least 45 minutes of bike racing.....ooppss, make that 45
seconds....but it was a GREAT 45 seconds! And besides, we had two minutes of
introduction for the new ABC commentator. What a bunch of bull $#!+....

Better be carefull Gary. You obviously don't know many Canadians. Even Bauer
grew up a stones throw from the US boarder he's not an American. Canadians
really hate it when when you call them Americans.
I for one don't see the big deal, after all doesn't everyone what to be an
American? But every English speaking Canadian I've ever met whould rather be
associated with American then with their French speaking countrymen. Better
cut this short before I get the whole country pissed off at me.
And yes the coverage was a joke. I too had my tape deck ready and got all
three minutes of it.

As a Brit who chose Canada over the US, I'd be interested to see
the response if you said this in the (KAOSWS::) Canada notesfile.

| Right, better not get started in here. But let me try to get my foot out first.
Saying everyone wants to be an American was kind of a joke. It's also not an
insult for an American to call someone an American (not a very good insult).
American cycling fans will, or already have, embraced Steve Bauer as one of our
own. We all know he's one of the best and I'm damn glad he joined 7-Eleven.
I'n not a Canadian but my grandparents own property in Onterio and I spent many
a summer there. My neighbors are Canadians from BC. It may be an embarrassing
fact, but few of the folks I've met had much nice to say about their brothers
from Quebec.
But you must admit that most Canadians bristle when Americans say that they are
American, or that Canada is just like America, or even that it's part of
America.

| A large number of the people in Qubec have little nice to say about
their fellow Qubecois. But that's another rathole.
BTW the US/Canada free trade agreement was just a political ploy
to join the two nations into one ...
under the Maple Leaf!
8-)

| Well, I just returned from vacation last night. Time to watch
the Paris-Roubaix. What a disgrace! I couldn't believe it.
And, after going to Charlotte to see my brother-in-law, I
find out that John Ellis isn't going to be back in time
for me to meet him.
What a bummer. Only good thing was that I got to take the
new TREK to North Carolina and ride in some decent weather.
Bike (and me, to some degree) performed well.
