1432.0. "Ideas for Race Sponsor?" by WECARE::PAMMER () Mon Feb 26 1990 12:44

A friend of mine is trying to organize and promote another 3 day
stage race (other than Killington) in Vermont in August.

The problem, as with getting most events started, is sponsorship.
Currently he has a sponsor that will match $5,000 with a co-sponsor.

Any ideas which we can give him will be appreciated.

    Jim,

Howabout going after Gillette for some sponsorship?

I've never seen an ad for razors (to shave legs) in all of the cycling
magazines that I've read. Why not? There are tens of thusands of racers
who shave legs! They could capture a good portion of the cycling market
with some good advertising. Exposure at a stage race might help!

I've recently used the new Gillette Sensor on my legs - shaving
through hair that hadn't been touched since last October. The Sensor
is the razor that gillette is spending $100 million on to advertise
(they advertised during the superbowl for example). I honestly found
that it was by far the best razor I have ever used on my legs.
It was easier on my legs (no nicks ... did it really "sense" my
legs?), didn't clog up much at all (BIC's clog a lot), and I was able
to shave both legs with one cartrige (I used to use 4 BIC's to do
my legs at the start of the season ... they dulled so fast & clogged
    so easily).

I was thinking of writing to them to ask for sponsorship for the
USCF club I'm in ... though I was just thinking of some free razors &
refills. Perhaps Gillette would be interested in some larger scale
advertising such as your friend's stage race, and suggestions to
advertise in BICYCLING, VELO NEWS, etc. to penetrate the cycling
    market.

PS - Keep us informed on the progress of this stage race.

I think there is probably still enough of a stigma in the general
public about men shaving their legs (for whatever reason) that
Gillette would decline to advertise the benefit for fear of
    losing the Bud-swilling crowd.
