1392.2 | First Century In Texas | DPDMAI::SMITH | The Solitary Cyclist | Tue Jan 02 1990 09:01 | 9 |
| Twenty-two intrepid souls started out on the First Century of the
Decade from the court house in Denton, Tx, about 30 miles north of
Dallas. The ride out was very fast, averaging 19.7 mph to the
courthouse in Montague. The return was less than spectacular; the wind
was now out of the South and those hills we hardly noticed on the way
out now loomed larger than life on the way back. Still it was an
interesting 109 miles. Sure beats being a sofa spud.

1392.3 | Wimps from California! | DRFUSO::SHROYER | | Tue Jan 02 1990 11:12 | 6 |
| "Bat", wldwst::pollard, Steve McClarey and I got out for a hilly forty
miles or so. Lots of sprints and complaining. We had to cut the ride a
little short as the temperature dropped to the low 50s and light rain. I
guess that classifies us as wimps?
By the way, Pollard got in the first crash of the year.

1392.4 | You have low standards... | WLDWST::POLLARD | | Tue Jan 02 1990 12:23 | 1 |
| That hardly counts as a crash.

| I thought the decade didn't start until next year. Maybe the title
of the base note should be "First Century of the 90s".

1392.6 | yup, did one too. | SQLRUS::FISHER | Pat Pending | Wed Jan 03 1990 14:49 | 11 |
| Work is the curse of the Biking Class, ...
But, yes, just to be on record, I did get in a C on Monday.
Now, let's see, I've never done more than 53 in one season before
so maybe I will this year.
(Of course, SOME (JLE) folks down south and out west do that
many doubles.)

admit that I haven't been on the bike for a while... color me wimpy.

1392.8 | Tarheels New Year/Solstice century | SHALOT::ELLIS | John Lee Ellis - assembly required | Thu Jan 03 1991 11:45 | 19 |
|
The final century of the Tarheels 1990 Solstice Century Series was
the traditional New Year's century out of Davidson NC, with the
club's Polar Bear Metric embedded within it.
A front had blown through the day before, and so we had nippy weather
of 30's to maybe 50, sun to light overcast. There were one or two
dozen racer types for the Metric, plus 6-10 more laid back cyclists.
For our Full Century, we had the 4 regulars (who have done the *whole*
series - Charlie Gable, Patricia Heller, and Woody Graham, and myself),
plus a father and son from Lexington NC. The regulars had just done
Century #4 in drizzle on Saturday the 29th, and so we were limber.
We warmed up with 28 miles at 8:15am, meeting the Metrics back in
Davidson at 10:00am, and went out on the traditional hilly course
in a brisk breeze for 64 miles, then finishing up with a final 8-mile
cool-down ride. Everybody survived, and went home to eat.

One down, 364 to go :*) . I had only planned on doing about 50 miles
but felt so good I decided to do the whole 100. I parked the van at
the bottom of Sugarloaf Mt. in Sunderland Mass. and headed out. I
joined up with the Franklin Hampshire Freewheelers who were out on a
30 mile club ride. When I got back to the van I felt good enough to
do the 1 mile climb of Mt. Sugarloaf.

I finished my first century, but unlike Mr. Ellis, it took me
six days to complete it :) !

1392.11 | | ALLVAX::JROTH | Saturday alley up to Sunday street | Mon Jan 07 1991 18:58 | 12 |
| I'm really embarassed at how little miles I'm riding lately - the last
100 miler was the warm rainy Sunday before newyears.
It's been somewhat cold and I've been busy. Interestingly, I have
been wearing this thing, I don't know what you call it, but it's
like a turtleneck you pull onto your head over your ears, and my
helmet fits over it, like a really wide headband. They say if your
feet are cold put on a hat - it's really weird, but my feet haven't
been as cold on some sub-30 days lately. This headband works better
than a knit thing I used to use, which let in too much wind.
