A colleague is to spend a month or so in Reading in the near future (he hopes) and wonders what kind of bikes one can rent in the Reading area ... or should he just bring his own. Answers here or directly to John ATLAST::Lawrence. Thanks, -john

If I thought you really wanted to "rend" a bicycle, I wouldn't let you near my collection. :-) ed, who is having a slow day.

As far as I remember, the best bike shop in Reading is Wilkins Cycles, about halfway between DEC park and Reading centre on the Basingstoke Road. They probably don't rent bikes, but they might have information. I found them helpful the few times I bought stuff there. John

I did a bit of phoning around just now and conluded that bike rental is not a well-developed part of cycle retail here. I found one shop that does bike rental, Stow's of Slough (phone 0753 20528), but I don't think their bikes are anything more than basic models. I asked what they had for hire and was told, "Three-speed ladies and gents, ten-speed ladies and gents, and a five-speed gents (drop handlebars)". Were they basic steel-rimmed models, I said? The answer was a slightly puzzled Yes. If he's intested, they're 20 per week, with a 45 deposit. If your colleague is a bike snob like the rest of us, he'd be better bringing his own bike. For a little bit more info about cycle shops in Reading, see SUBURB::READING note 133. Rod PS I wouldn't recommend Wilkins Cycles, Berkshire Cycles are much better.

They probably do not have either toe clips or aero seat posts. ed

Thanks. I'll forward this to John Lawrence (avid bikist colleague) and suggest he bring his own. Where is Berkshire Cycles? I didn't know about that one. -john RE: Aero seatpost... good point. That's the real kicker. The other compromises you could probably tolerate for a week or two... :-) |
