941.0. "MPOA Partyline, and Multiprotocol ?" by BERN02::DEY (Walter Dey, Berne Switzerland) Mon May 12 1997 09:48

    MPOA

q1) Our partyline please ! I tried the official path, but got no
    answer.

q2) Can someone shed some light on MPOA V1. What is the meaning of
"Multiprotocol" in the word. I thought that NHRP, MARS are all IP only.
So "Multiprotocol" means actually all the goodies for IP, and the rest
    is LANE V2.0 ????

Without having read MPOA V1.0 (which I couldn't find at the ATMF's ftp
site) my interpretation of "Multiprotocol" in MPOA is DECnet, IPX, etc.
in an all-ATM environment as opposed to LANE which is a mixed
environment (ie, ATM and some other(s) technology(ies)).

There is a short explanation of MPOA and its plus and minuses on the
ATM FAQ document found at URL

    www.networks.digital.com/dr/gigaatm/tips/

I think it is a very well written document. It may be old (June 95)
but I think it has good info

The ATM FAQ (of June 96) is certainly an excellent document. However to
be most effective it needs to be updated on a regular basis (6 months?)

Back to MPOA v1, we definitely need

    - an official position (standard stuff: "DIGITAL will support MPAO in
the 6 months following the official release of a stable, implementable
      specification ....")
    - some educational stuff so that we all be brought to a "level" of
technical understanding (very much like what was done for LANE: PPT
presentation, videotape sent to ATM Wizards/SE's)

With the imminent release of V1 we hear a number of companies talk on
MPOA. In certain cases it appears to be a lock-out.

Telling customers that Cisco have bailed out of MPOA long ago (and even
more, are criticizing MPOA in their Tag Switching RFCs), that NEWBRIGE
VIVID implement a proprietary MPOA, etc ... is useless. Especially when
    competing with NEWBRIDGE VIVID ...
