2493.0. "Driver Price to Purchase" by CHEFS::ABBOTT_K () Mon Feb 26 1996 16:36

Has anyone had any quotes for the purchase of their company car,
    recently?

I have just been quoted 6693.75p to purchase my 1993 (K Reg) Astra
1.7TD GLS Est, 46700 miles on the clock.

Any comments on this, I think that it is rather high for a lease car, I
have seen them on a forecourt for about the same and would expect to
get a discount for cash plus a warranty if I bought from a dealer.

Considering that there is no warranty, tyres won't last much longer, ex
lease, etc I would of thought 5500 nearer the mark. What do PHH do with
their cars, I can't see them getting the above from any auction.

Prices used to be good, I've bought two cars in the past, but it now
seems that the lease companies are trying to get forecourt prices for
    them. Any comments?

    Keith.

On my Golf GTI (5-door, metallic paint) Reg in Feb 1993 with 57K miles I was
asked for 8268.75 !!!

I looked in Top Gear magazine, and they reckoned that with only 30K miles a
private sale should be 8750

I'd be surprised if PHH get more than 6000 at auction.

    >Considering that there is no warranty

You may want to check this out but I believe ex-lease cars do come with
a warranty these days. This may explain the higher price. If you play
it right at the end of a three year lease you could get a new MoT and
    a years road tax.

I'll be getting a price for my 30 month old Cav LS 1.7 TD (60000 miles)
shortly. I'm expecting it to be between 5 and 6k. It may well be
higher judging by recent prices I have heard about. I'll post a reply
    here to let you know.

Royston,

>> Barrie, what sort of warranty did you get ? Was it 3 years old with
>> new MoT and year's road tax ?

The car was at end of lease ( 3 years old ) I had it MOT'd and Taxed before I
initiated the purchase.

I dont know about warranty yet as I haven't recieved any comfirmation of the
sale from PHH yet ( though they recieved the money several weeks ago ). No
mention of warranty was made while I was arranging the purchase ( which was done
via electronic mail through Lease Plan ).

As I've made sure that the car has been kept in A1 condition since it was new
I consider that I've got a good deal on the purchase price. If there is a
warranty it will be a bonus. PHH have promised that they will send my
documentation today, if there is a warranty I'll let you know.

2493.7Excessive Savanna price from PHHCHEFS::ast060.edo.dec.com::geddesiIain Graham GeddesTue Feb 27 1996 14:4512
I had a quote from PHH to buy my Savanna 7 seater, which was over top book
price (7157 against 6450). I expected to pay nearer the auction price of
4775!

When I spoke to LeasePlan they agreed it seemed expensive and checked the
price with PHH. The reason given was that the 7 seaters produce a higher
price in auction - but I defy them to get over 6.5k at auction!

I get the impression that they are increasing the price because Digital have
gone to Leaseplan, but then maybe I'm paranoid???

I have always wondered why the lease companies don't virtually give the
cars away to us at end of lease as it would save them so much
administrative hassle of collecting the vehicle, storing it, taking it
    to auction etc.

The best idea would be to find out when and where the car is being
auctioned, and to go and buy it! That should be easy enough to
    organise.

PHH wanted #8190 (yes, eight thousand one hundred and ninety
pounds) for my MAZDA 626 Estate (seven seater) last September -
K reg, 34,000 miles, good condition, alloys, air, roofracks, towbar,
taxed, MOT'ed. I got a friend to check it out as it went through ADT
at Blackbush a couple of days later, it went for around #6K (can't
remember the actual figure) - and they hadn't even bothered to get
it cleaned/valeted!!!

The PHH mark-up on my previous car (Volvo 740 GLE Estate) was
similarly amusing.

Am I glad I passed on that one?

    >Well, they are in business to make money!

Thats why I thought they'd save themselves a load of expense by letting
us buy the cars at a reasonable cost.

I don't know how much it costs to transport a car to auction and pay
the auction fees but I would at least a few hundred quid so why do they
    bother ?

Apparently at Digital in Canada the company cars have a 4 year lease
and the cars are offered to the employee at the end of lease, and I
swear I'm not making this up, for *one dollar*. The lease company writes
them off but a token amount has to be paid for some tax reason.

I have been quoted 6650 for a Jan 94 Astra 1.7td GLS Estate extras being
alloy wheels and ABS , I checked that it does come with a 3 month warranty
from HERTZ and the car has done 60,000 miles and has 10 months road tax.

This still seems a bit high a price compared to that on the garage forecourt.

I bought my car at end of lease last April
A 2.0 GLI Cavalier - not quite 22,000 miles (really)
Price 6270.00, which I was extremely pleased with - forecourt prices
at the time were approx 7.5K for similar.
Nice surprise a week later was confirmation of 3 months AA Warranty
    This was via HERTZ.

It's called 'greed', they think they may get something for nothing.
They have nothing to loose, the depreciation has already been
factored into the lease charges they have been taking for the past
three years.

    I was quoted 12,495 for my 60,000 mile 1993 (L Reg) Toyota MR2 from
Hertz. I asked a Toyota dealer how much he thought it would be worth,
he said considering the high mileage he would be willing to pay only
10,000 for it (although I guess he would sell it on for around 11K).

I'm just waiting for a price on MY Mazda 626 Estate! I was hoping for
something about 4-5K!. My Montego Estate was offered to me 3 years ago
for 3.8K This was truly a bargain. The point about the Mazda Estate is
it is obsolete and was even so when I got it three years ago as the new
bodyshell had been introduced (but not in estate form).

I'll let you know what Leasplan (or is it PHH) quote.

2493.17CHEFS::ABBOTT_KWed Feb 28 1996 15:4119
The difference in prices quoted here is amazing. Barrie's Renault
definitely looks a good deal. I spoke to Leaseplan re .0 and all they
would say is "sorry - no negotiation".

I don't hold out any hope, but I have written to PHH directly and made
them an offer, they can take it or leave it. If you don't ask you don't
get.......not that I expect to "get".....

I don't think I'll follow it to auction, Grimshaws will be delivering
my new car to Poole and taking the old one back with them....unless
    they hear otherwise before hand.

In years gone by, I have actually bought two cars from PHH, both at
excellent prices, so they have obviously changed their policy on how
    much they ask for them.

Just a pity that I really wanted this one for myself.

If anyone is interested in buying my 2.0i 16v Citroen ZX, it has done
54,000, just had new tyres, only its second set (I don't thrash my cars
anymore). It is due for a service, however my new one arrives next
Wednesday.

It is however on its second engine and it has spent more time in the garage
with a fuel injection problem than it has on the road!

I will get you a price if you want. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 3k
but I bet they want at least 8k.

Mike, please endeavour to put your notes in the correct place. If you can't
be bothered, that generally means that someone else has to go to the trouble
of tidying up the conference. Anyone who persistantly can't be bothered will
have their notes deleted, neither myself nor the other moderators have the
time to chase around after people who won't make the effort.

This was around my decision point, but given that I've seen one with

I cannot possibly see what is cheaper and easier to sell it to the

Selling it at auction includes collection, storage and auction fees.

Royston,

My view is based on the OTT prices they want for
the cars. Having been to Blackbushe
auction recently, and bought a car for my wife, I
know how much they are really going for - less!

I think they have an established channel (The
Trade) and it suits everyone (in The Trade) to
make sure the lucrative ex-Fleet car market is not
screwed up by staff getting in on the act.

I may be wrong....

One interesting thing is that most of the cars that have recently
come to end of lease are the old hertz and phh vehicles.

Maybe when the LP cars come to end of lease the prices may be more
    reasonable.

LP would not be able to comment on the prices wanted by 3rd party lease
