| I buy petrol exclusively from supermarket filling stations, and pay just about
50p per litre. Diesel is usually about the same price. If you buy from the
branded stations you can pay up to about 56p per litre.
These prices are generally true, as far as I know, for central southern England.
Prices will vary around the country, however.

with Diesel about the same.

PS I was around Bristol and Bath at the weekend and prices seemed to be
higher.

| True, I pay 48.8 for unleaded in Reading, and 50.8 in Bristol. However, many
of the garages in Bristol are more than that - more in the region of 52.8 or
53.8.
As far as I know....Cheapest in Reading - Safeway, Basingstoke Road.
Close 2nd are Tesco, Savacentre and Asda.

| I'll bet the more remote areas of the country are more expensive. It'll depend
where in Scotland you're going.
In any case, I would expect that you'll pay over 60p per litre if you shop
around a little bit.

| Mind you (I can only speak for S.W.Wales, here), I've noticed that many
far-flung places are near oil refineries, and the petrol tends to be relatively
cheap, as the transport costs are no higher (less, in fact) than for the
cities. Maybe this goes for bits of Scotland as well...

2395.8 | Costs more up North Mate.. | BRUMMY::HATTONM | I could fit in an unmod'ed Mclaren, at half the price | Tue Mar 28 1995 15:28 | 19 |

Scotland prices tend to be higher, I know 'cause I go there alot, so
being close to the oil fields/refineries dosn't matter !!
Typically, W-Mids area (at the moment) 48-50p Litre - if you go to the
Asda's, Tesco's, etc (but a new Sainsburys/Tesco? in Burton-on-Trent
was 44.9p !! last wednesday) Normal branded fuel about 50-56p litre.
Diesel is about the same price at the moment.
In Scotland, from the Tesco's etc again, it usually costs 2-3p litre
more. Maybe the petrol has to travel "down south" and then back up
north before they can sell it !!
Anyway, fuel generally costs more in remote areas as well as Scotland,
as previously mentioned. (no replys from irrate "Jocks" please, 'cause
I married one.....)

Up here in Cumbria the cheapest I`ve seen is at Safeways in Workington
(where I normally go) 51.9 Unleaded and 52.9 Diesel. The Shell garages
in Cockermouth (where I live) are 54.? up to 56.? for Unleaded and
Diesel.

Around Inverness its about 56-57/l unleaded and 54.9 at the supermarket
where I go.
If you go north to thurso/wick its about 58/60p/l and you can see one
of the oilfields offshore!!

| Re .14: That would be the Tesco's round the back of IKEA, right? I filled up
there about a month ago at about 10p per litre less than that! It's a good
place to stop if you're around that area.
(For those of you who've not been along the north circular for years, that part
of it is now much much much better than it was - dual-carriageway with
underpasses at the roundabouts. The only problem from this side is Hangar Lane!)

Nope, but that one was also 46.9, as was the Safeways and the *NEW*

minor point, super unleaded gets the increase next april, I believe. So I
wonder if we'll see an increase in mileage rates... will we hell! We'll just
get some contrived excuse along the lines of (for example) `well modern cars
are more fuel efficient, so we expect you to be able to travel more miles per
gallon.'

I thought the 4p on super unleaded in April was in addition to 3.5p
now, but I may have misunderstood...

I agree. I think the super green price increase is in addition to the
3.5p on all petrol and diesel.

| I've hunted through my old mail - but can't find it - can anyone tell
me what the rational is for 8p per mile? Is it something like the
average fuel consumption of the base car (Vectra?) set against some
sort of average fuel price (from the AA?).
Petrol seems to be around 56p a gallon (I know you can shop around -
but we don't all have time for that), so unless you are doing 30mpg all
the time, you are subsidising the Company - when on Business.
Perhaps a fair model, if you were in an ideal world, but I would think any car would struggle to
achieve these sorts of figures on urban cycles. I can't believe many of
our City based Engineers get any where near 30mpg - especially if
working in London.
