2361.0. "Audi's ABS faulty....any ideas?" by MKTING::WILSON () Thu Jan 12 1995 09:32

CAR: Audi Coupe Quattro

I know the easy answer is to put it into a garage but.......

ABS off light in dash coming on periodically/randomly; can often be rectified
by resetting the manual on/off switch inside the car.

At low speeds the brakes appear to judder, and the pedal moves slightly up and
down while the brakes make a strange sound. At normal/high speed the brakes
appear to be fine.....I've braked heavily from 60MPH and everything works as
it should do.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance......John

I had a similar problem on my Mazda 626, the ABS 'fault' light would
illuminate every day or two. The dealer could find no fault so after
a couple of visits they decided to remove-clean-replace every
earthing connection they could find on the car - since they did that
I have only noticed the light coming on a couple of times in over 18
months!!!

Thanks for the input. I suspect however that when the ABS light comes on the
ABS is in fact not operating....I need to test the brakes when this happens
again. If I get a lock-up with the light on then the circuit is working ok, and
a problem lies with the ABS braking system.

I've got a feeling this could be an expensive problem to solve.

Re: -.1, -.2

I should have made it clearer. When the light came on the ABS stopped
working, i.e. I could lock the wheels, I got no characteristic ABS
pedal kick-back.

2361.4Belts need Tightening ?FORTY2::BRIDPORTBlimey, that's good.Thu Jan 12 1995 16:206
	Don't know what sort of ABS system your car is fitted with but
	if it is belt driven and the problem is intermittent, sounds like
	the belts just need tightening up a bit.

The Mazda ABS is driven by a very beefy electric motor that is fed by
a 60 Amp fuse, there are no belts! The lights dim quite nicely for a
couple of seconds just after you start the engine, as it pressurizes
the system :-)

    I had a very similar problem with the ABS on my Toyota Celica (before I
    got a Vauxhall like everyone else).

    Upon taking it to the local Toyota garage I was told that the problem
    was to do with the onboard computer which controls the ABS and that the
    entire system would need replacing.

    Total cost to Digital/Hertz was 1300.00 pounds but it certainly fixed
    the problem !!

2361.7Any flashing codes....AYOP93::hickmanWed Jan 18 1995 10:367
John,

If its flashing at you, it might be telling you whats wrong. On my toyota the fault
lights flash codes to tell you where the problem is. Next time see if its doing this,
(then bye a very expensive Audi workshop manual to get the codes...).

To close this off,

Wheel sensors were removed by ex-Audi mechanic and checked/cleaned and now the
system works great!

He told me that ABS system repairs by main dealers are expensive. Audi wanted
150 quid/per wheel sensor! plus 40 pounds for the diagnostic check to be done.

The mechanics time was 15 minutes and he charged me nothing.

If you ever get ABS problems then have the wheel sensors cleaned at once. It may
save you lots of dosh!
