| I saw some lap times for the F1 and F3000 cars at Hockenheim. The slower F1
cars (Pacific) were in the 1:51-1:52 range, the fastest F3000 cars were around
1:55.

| .1cars (Pacific) were in the 1:51-1:52 range, the fastest F3000 cars were around
.11:55.
Yep, the Pacifics were betwen 7 and 8 seconds slower than the polemen.
The F3000's have 3 litre engines with a 9000rpm rev limiter, they can't
use carbon brakes, no fancy aerodynamics, etc ... The + side is that a
F3000 season costs only a little bit more than F3 yet they are much
faster.
There are currently (to my knowledge)
- 1 International F3000 championship (the one discussed here)
- 2 National F3000 championships (UK and Japan)
F3 is different. There are a number of highly competitive National F3
championships (UK, Germany, France, Italy, ... just to mention the most
competitive ones). They usually involve 30+ entrants, of which 2 to 4
are potential winners and potential F1 drivers. Some drivers make a
direct jump from F3 into F1 (Prost, Senna, ...) while others go through
F3000 (Streiff, Modena, Moreno, Panis, Comas, Hill, Coulthard, ...).
Over here, Eurosport have a couple of weekly magazines showing bits of
all these races (Motors and Speedworld). I like to watch those races
because it's relatively easy to spot the STARS of tomorrow.

2291.3 | Boullion and DAMS champions !!!! | LEMAN::CHEVAUX | Patrick Chevaux @GEO, DTN 821-4150 | Mon Oct 03 1994 18:09 | 35 |
| Yesterday was the last day for this year's International F3000
championship. After 7 races the championship was open to 4 potential
winners: De Ferran and Lagorce with 28 points, Boullion with 27 and
Sospiri with 22.
Magny-Cours saw Lagorce take pole position on the wet track with
Boullion on the 1st row. Other championship contenders De Ferran and
Sospiri were relatively far down the grid.
Sunday, the weather was fine, sunny and mild. Lagorce took off from
pole and led for the 1st quarter of the race followed by Boullion. De
Ferran (Paul Stewart Racing) stopped early with mechanical failure.
Boullion passed Lagorce and steadily built a gap growing up to 6-7
seconds. Sospiri moved his way up the field to finish 5th.
Magny-Cours Race results:
1. Boullion DAMS
2. Lagorce Apomatox
3. Gomez DAMS
....
5. Sospiri
....
Final 1994 Championship standings
1. Boullion DAMS 36
2. Lagorce Apomatox 34
3. De Ferran P Stewart 28
4. Sospiri ? 24
....
Of the 4 drivers above only Frank Lagorce has already signed a F1
contract: he is Ligier's test driver as of now.

Don't you find f3000 to appear to to be very slow on TV. I know they
aren't slow but the TV does something...... Maybe that's why Bernie
wants to ring the changes.

Mike, I find F1 and F3000 to appear 'slow' on TV. The Magny-Cours
coverage on Eurosport was particularly bad with too few cameras located
too far from the track (no zoom, no closeup) and a terrible TV director
who really enjoyed showing general views of the thing and just
forgetting to show the race.
In real terms, F3000 usually go around 10 secs slower than F1s on an
identical track when F1 lap around 1'20". The nice thing about F3000
compared to F1 is that the 10 fastest guys qualify within 1 second of
each other. They use almost identical chassis and engines, the proper
setup being the driver's differential. Other thing: like in Indycar
they can't use carbon brakes, meaning the braking distances are much
longer than in F1 (meaning more overtaking). Otherwise their top speed
is equal to F1's.

Actually de Ferran was punted off by de Simone at the hairpin on the
first lap.

| >>The Magny-Cours coverage on Eurosport was particularly bad
That's what I meant, it was truly appalling and did look really slow. It
certainly did nothing for the promotion of the sport. The other thing is that
they now look too stable, unlike F1, probably because they just don't have the
power but still have too much downforce.

championship. The championship leader punted him off at the first bend.
