| But maybe the new engine won;t have the cutting out
problem in the current 16v or the problem where water
can get inside the engine and bend it.
Is this still a 2.0 litre or are they fitting the 1.8 16v
on Calibras now? (The one that goes on the 1.8 Astra GSi.

| .0 than the old engine, no problem. Wrong, the new engine is 136 bhp vs
.0 the 150 Bhp of the old engine and probably uses more petrol even though
I'd think the new engine will need less petrol. My personal guess based
on current manufacturers hot developments ...

| I have just had a phone call explaining all.
The ECOTECH engine is 2L 16V and is supposed to be the most
technologically advanced 16v in the world! Ie it meets all EEC regs,
the rest I will leave to your own judgment.
BHP 0-60 30-50 TOP URBAN 56 75

OLD 150 7.5 7.5 137 27.2 48.7 39.2
16V
ECOTECH 136 8.5 7.5 131 26.9 47.1 38.7
NEW
This slight difference will probably make no difference whatsoever
to the driving or the petrol costs so I'll go for it.
But I ask myself is this progress????????

7.5 secs for a 16V Calibra??? Where did you get those figures
from then? A&M, What Car and Top Gear put the figure at 8.1
or 8.3 secs.

| It says 7.5 in the Vauxhall glossies, and I actually clocked my Cavalier
GSI at 7.2 secs to a genuine 60 mph.
Anyway the point is the published Vauxhall figure is 1 sec slower
for the new engine.

Cavaliers are quicker 0-60 than the Calibras. Calibras are much
heavier.
Re : The new 16v
An engine that produces less power and uses more fuel isn't progress.
The 16v 1.8 must be nearly that quick.

Re .6
I always hear how heavy Calibras are (certainly they FEEL more
substantial than Cavaliers), but here are some figures :
Calibra 8v - Kerb weight 23.5 hundredweight
Cavalier 2 litre Sri - Kerb weight 23.7 hundredweight
Obviously the Calibra is NOT 'much heavier' than a Cavalier, in
reality.
Mark
PS I always found my Calibra to feel quicker than the GSi Cavaliers
I drove.

| It's probably a marketing decision. They might be trying to space out
the 4 engine options a bit more evenly. At the moment the 8v outsells
the 150bhp 16v by quite a margin.

Also, take a look at the performance figures for the V6 Calibra. It's
actually SLOWER than the 150bhp 16v in some areas...

I don't understand this statement, (It does have four cylinders,
doesn't it ?).
There are any number of 16V engines out there with *half* the capacity
that could better 136bhp...

| The friendly man at Wadham Kenning told me that the 8 valve Cavalier SRI
has been discontinued.
The only SRI model will be a 2 litre 136hp 16 valve, available March 1994.
It will be interesting to see if this comes in at the same lease cost as
the 8 valve (any one got an order in the pipeline?) or whether the
level 8/9 allowance will be revised up to cover the extra cost?

Since the 8/9 allowance should have been based on the 16v version in
the first place, and the car changes were simply a way to reduce costs,
I don't think there is much chance of this.
(Cost of 16V is base + 1170...)

I have a 2.0 16v eng in my new cavalier Aug-95 and it has suffered from
the following problem, which the mechanic told me was "a normal"
problem with this version of the "crapalier"....
When driving, the correct way !, round roundabouts or right hand
corners of various radius a metallic rubbing/gratting noise can be
heard. Turns out to be the exaust box comming loose/dropping off
@!#@$#!. Know common problem on this engine size.
To test: drive round a roundabout and "load" up the rear end and
listen....
Anybody else suffered/suffering from this ????

It might actually work in the short term, but it will dry up quickly and leave
the squeak. Try some silicon spray or something similar that will stick around
longer.
