This is probably a very simple question, so please bear with me. I have recently bought an old (80) BMW 732 (an automatic). So far everything seems to be fine, except for one incident. It was about one week after I got the car and had already driven it for about 100 miles. When I wanted to start the car, apparently only the electrical system was switched on. The engine didn't even try -- there's no noise whatsoever. The radio and lights all worked normally. I tried the brake. It's stiff. I couldn't move it by anything more than an inch or so. I switched off the car. The brake was still stiff. Having other urgent things to do, I locked the car and left. Two days later I returned and tried. It switched on like a charm. I switched it off and tried the brake. It moved swiftly. It's been more than two weeks now. Everything's fine. It couldn't be temperature because I'm in Hong Kong (25-30 degree C currently). It's probably not battery because the lights are normal. Is there any built-in feature or locking mechanism in the BMW 732 which I unknowingly initiated ? (Rather unlikely for a car of that age) Since I don't have the Owner's Manual I can't check. I would appreciate any suggestions. Regards, Eddie.

as it's an Automatic, it wasn't in 'Drive' was it ? if so then you shouldn't be able to start it.... Graham

I've experienced this strange behaviour several times with automatics. Sometimes I've been able to trace the problem when in a hurry I pushed the gear lever in P while the car was still moving a little bit. But as .0 mentionned, usually the engine started when I tried again 1 hour later. Something to do with a safety device ?

Re : .2 You could be right. I was in a great hurry when I parked the car so I might have pushed it into P while the car was still moving. Don't know whether I want to do an experiment to test the hypothesis though. |
