2014.0. "REAR VIEW MIRROR" by RDGENG::CLAYTON () Mon Feb 08 1993 12:53

Because of the new MOT laws I need to have two rear view mirrors My car being
an old VAUXHALL FIRENZA is only fitted with a standard rear view mirror inside
having spent the weekend trying to find a clip on mirror the sort that you
could fix to the guttering (old mini's had them years ago) guess what noone
 had one, instead they had plastic screw fit mirrors in bright colours
 and they looked about two quids worth.

 QUESTION Is there someone who could lend me a clip on mirror just for the MOT
            its worth a drink or two
            or failing that does any know where I can get one.

                            All input greatfully received.

                                      Regards Richard clayton

   PS I think with the new MOT laws a lot of older cars will go to the wall.

2014.1Is it worth 'fiddling' this ?ESBS01::RUTTERRut The NutMon Feb 08 1993 12:577
    Be honest, having a door- or wing-mounted mirror is worthwhile...

    If you are concerned about originality, I am pretty sure you could
    source the right sort of mirror that was fitted to Firenza's that
    did have them fitted. I'm sure some variants would have done.

2014.2Are 2 mirrors required for road use ?SUBURB::JASPERTMon Feb 08 1993 13:1212
    I also guess your concern is originality, as you will have the same
    problem in 12 months time of having just 1 mirror.
    So lets assume that you want an aesthetic mirror. Surely the junkyards
    must have a Vauxhall mirror of this vintage ?
    If you just HATE MIRRORS then why not buy a towing mirror which clips
    on the door or front wing. You can then fit it on an annual basis.
    Then you are free to remove it without
    leaving scars, I find the legality of this questionable though, should
    you wish to use the car on the road between MOT dates 8*)

I got a clip on mirror for an old Beetle a few years back from Halfords. As .1 said,
I'd recommend having a mirror fitted as a permanent fixture. They are useful!

	I find it strange that they should pass MOT rules retrospectively,
	are you sure that this applies to your car? I remember the clip on
	ones too, I had one on my mini, however, although I keep a lot of
	junk I don't have that. Sorry,

2014.5Watch Out! Old Vauxhall heap on the road!BRUMMY::RICHARDYour robot sounds like Pink FloydMon Feb 08 1993 14:505
Hey Clayton,

Don't tell me you are really going to put that thing on the road?

    Are you sure there isn't a registration date before which the new rules do
    not apply?

    My Dad's 1909 triumph only has 2 brakes and a bulb horn but it still
    pases it's MOT.

    Huw.
2014.7a little early, I thinkMARVIN::RUSLINGDave Rusling REO2 G/E9 830-4380Thu Feb 11 1993 10:406
	I have a friend with an MG-TC, it nearly failed once when the tester
	couldn't see an in-cockpit indicator light, however he did notice that
	the battery charge gauge flickered so that counted...
