1969.1 | gunged up carb? | WELCLU::HEDLEY | Lock up your wildebeest, it's the RCC! | Thu Dec 17 1992 10:59 | 6 |
| I had a similar problem with a couple of Polos (mks I and II). This
was usually cured by cleaning the carb out. The problem appeared to
occur when the fuel had been allowed to get pretty low, so I assume
this caused the gunge in the fuel tank to clog the carb.

| All fliers know that carbs can ice under certain atmospheric conditions.
2 ways to overcome this:
1. pull the anti-ice lever (only on airplanes)
2. push throttle to flat-out
I think you have no other choice than no 2 ....

| yes ok... I fly too, but my Scirroco doesn't. My Alfa has a summer and winter
setting for the air-intake, as do some Peugeots I believe. Naturally my VW
is not so equipped - any other suggestions?

Many VWs have automatic (temperature controlled) switch over from summer to
winter air intakes. Our old (1983) and our new (1990) Polos both have this
feature. It might be worth checking

| RE .1 I have just bought an 85 scirocco GT and it suffers the same
problem only when cold. My dad has an 85 golf which also does the same
apparantly this is a trademark on VW's.
I will look for the Summer/Winter setting later.

1969.8 | Does this sound like Carb icing? | AYOV14::LLEVY | | Fri Jan 29 1993 11:47 | 21 |
| RE .1 I have an 1989 VW Golf Driver and it seems to run OK for about
20 miles at about 70mph and then starts to loose power and stutter. It
also seems to drink petrol. I had a lot of problems with dirt in my
fuel tank previously. The garage I took it to said that they thought the
problem was carb icing. The reason given was the connection between
the exhaust and carb was broken so the required heat was not being
transferred to the carb. The problem is still there.
My questions are:-
1) Does this sound like carb icing or something else?
2) Would this cause my fuel consumption to be dramatically worse? (ie 20MPG)
3) Why does it only occur after the car has been running for 10-15
minutes at speed?
Appreciate any guidance,
Lionel

1969.9 | Not a ridiculous diagnosis... | PEKING::SMITHRW | Err..... | Fri Jan 29 1993 14:07 | 24 |
| I had this problem ( or something quite like it ) on my BX. How I
eventually figured it out was, I had a gap in the gasket along the side
of the float chamber. As the air pressure through the system
downstream of the air filter is lower than atmospheric, air was leaking
into the float chamber through this gap. On the twin-choke Weber
fitted to the BX, there's a hole at the top of the float chamber for
pressure equalization. I believed that there was a flow through this
hole of air from the leak and also fuel it had scooped up. When I
changed the gasket, the problem disappeared. However, I smashed the
car up on the test drive, so this might not be conclusive....
However.....
If your hot-air hose is not delivering, carb icing is a real
possibility, and not necessarily just in below-zero temperatures. The
evaporation of fuel cools things down very nicely, thanks. Have you
fixed the hose?
The old air-cooled flat fours are notorious ice generators, so most
mechanics tend to say "carb ice" by reflex with VWs.

.8 1) Does this sound like carb icing or something else?
No. Carb icing appears when throttle is running idle or partially open.
When running wide open, the carb will not ice.
What you describe sounds more like some air leak that only appears when
the engine reaches operating temperature. Not an unusual case.
