Well, I'm an optimist, so here it is the SPORTSCAR RACING 1993 Note.
Discuss such things as the proposed GT regulations, entries for Le
Mans, IMSA racing, the non-championship series of 1000 km races
proposed for Europe.
To get things going, MN reports (with quotes from TWR) that Jaguar/TWR
are to prepare a works XJ220 team for the Daytona 24 hour race. Cars
will be made available to customers (Chamberlain are rumoured to be
interested) at a cost of 390,000 Pounds (30K more than roadgoing
XJ220s).
There are rumours (so far unsubstantiated) of a series of 1000 Km races
at circuits in Europe (Including Silverstone (boo), Spa (Hooray!) and
the Nurburgring (so what?)). Whether these happen will probably depend
on whether other teams and manufacturers follow Jaguar's example and
build cars to the GT regs.
Le Mans should be full of all sorts of odds and sods, but expect the
3.5 litre cars from Peugeot to be the front runners unless some other
manufacturer comes forward with a series contender (IMSA category
Toyotas or Jaguars perhaps?).
1993 could be interesting, after all.

Rather than dig the perverbial rathole in the F1 note I thought a reply
here was better.
I fully support Marks view that sportscar racing's death was a year too
late !!!!!!!! This years championship was not worthy of the name and in
my opinion was a complete and utter farce. Peugoet or toyota were the
only real prospects of doing any good. The championship was doomed to
fail as far back as 1989 when the 3.5 litre class was pushed out. Just
look at the intrest that there was then, Spice, they already ran 3.5 in
C2. I suspect that the only reason that Jaguar, Mercedes etc even
thought about 3.5 was that at the time they wanted in, that was a
position forced on them if they wanted in. I don't know why anyone
bothered to listen to peugeot last year when they pulled the
championships out of the fire. When all the real big players pulled out
what was the point. It's all past history now, if anything this years
championship did more damage to sportscar racing than not running it
would have. I suspect that the only reason that anyone put in for the
championship was 1 race , Le Mans. Aston Martin's return was for that
alone.
I believe that sportscar racing will return and stronger than it has
been since 90. It has happended in the past , sportscar racing took a
dive then returned. Sportscar racing has been this route before and
each time a long distance endurance championship emerged. Thats what
the teams want and thats what the spectators want. If it means putting
together a series of races where the spirit is right it will all come
together. If nothing happens in 93, then sportscar racing is dead, it
will only be people running nothing races with no backing or support.
I do beleive that there is enough intrest with sponsors/makers and
private teams to put on a good show at Le Mans every year, provided
they keep it the way it was and Fisa don't try to screw around with
the spirit of the event.
Provided that any form of championship has Le Mans as it's Centre
piece, is not ridiculously expensive, not requiring a multi million
pound development budget, and attracts a good crowd making it worth
circuits wanting races, it will happen. Create the right atmosphere, the
right circumstances and get the right people intrested, the rest will
come. What is needed is someone to pull all that together , assuming it
is done for sport and not for money, it will happen.

I have seen 1100kg on a spec sheet. Have ACO or FISA published an
official rule for peak engine power ? They were talking about a 400 or
450 bhp upper limit.
I fully share Mark's views. This will be FUN !

Just a point , yeh it will be intresting. The reason why is because it
is not driven by money. It's people racing because they want to race.
It needs some money , a top team to give it a professional appearance.
Argue that point if you like , but I think the important thing is that
when the fun goes out and the big money comes in it's only time before
the real racers go . I think yer mercedes and Jaguar pulled out because
the money aspect was getting too silly. Mercedes were thought to have
poured more money into the c291 project than someone like Mclaren last
season, and for what ???

Nigel (T-BAR) Guest writing via the above mentioned.
Seems to have been a bit quiet in here recently...
Looking at the paper, i understand that a GT race involving 220's is
on at Silverstone this weekend (Sunday).
Not to sure what other types are involved (would be nice to see the
Lotus's).
Anyone else know more (or interested in going) ?
