1782.0. "Inquiry re. Monaco Grand Prix" by XELENT::BHOLA () Wed Jun 03 1992 21:19

Do any of you folks know whether there will be a broadcast of the
Monaco GP in the US? A number of us have been working on this issue
over here and have been quite unsuccessful. We surmise that since ABC
did not broadcast the race, ESPN may have obtained permission to
broadcast any coverage they may have obtained. Thanks ...

I think the closest we'll get is the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corp). From
what I've seen on usenet, the english stations will not re-broadcast it,
but the French stations will. Not sure what their schedule is though.

Anyone have an idea of what it costs to rent a "room with a view" from
the Loews hotel during the Grand Prix weekend, or does anyone have the
phone number for said hotel ? I realise you might have to book now for
1994/5 but a conversation at lunch indicated it wasn't that expensive.

Prove me wrong, PLEASE, but if it didn't cost a fortune, wouldn't the
place get block booked by companies decades in advance?

Errrrrr NO it isn't and apparently it isn't. !!!!!!!!!!!

Next year is not yet fully booked, price is 3800 FF per night including
breakfast and evening meal, NO guests are allowed in the rooms though.
plus you get a free early morning wake up call curtesy of P Belmondo et
    al.

Umm. Well I don't know about you, but I reckon 400 a night is a little
    dear! :^)

Not as bad as it could be though, what's (for comparison) the price of
    a stand seat?

No guests? Does that mean NO guests, or only a couple?

According to the young lady on the bookings desk NO guests are allowed,
pity as I had 23 people prepared to share a bed, that would have made
it a very reasonable 165 FF each. Children are allowed in for free.

Has anyone been to the Loewes Hotel ? , whats the view like and are you
"trapped" in the Hotel on race day or can you wander around (within
    limits) on race day.

Are the roads restricted at all times or can I drive to/from the Hotel
during certain periods ie during the evening.

As for the Cost, well last year at Hockenhiem we paid 200 Dm (70)
per person for tickets, and they were not the dearest by far.
So 380 quid for 3 people seems quite good, considering one of the 3
will be only 12 months old going to a normal circuit would be very
tough, going to Loewes would mean I could change nappies and still
    watch the race in comfort.

ps Thanks for the info of the phone number.

Yes, that's the gotcha. Most rooms have a sea view. Few rooms have the
hairpin view and these are probably the ones that are booked years in
    advance.

I've stayed (DEC business trips) many times at the Loews.

.7 "trapped" in the Hotel on race day or can you wander around (within
    .7 limits) on race day.

Well, wandering around will be very limited on race day. Add to this
that you will not be able to see the track when walking around (they
build big walls and grandstands). You'll have to buy a grandstands seat
and that is very expensive too.

.7 Are the roads restricted at all times or can I drive to/from the Hotel
.7 during certain periods ie during the evening.

Monaco streets are usually closed from 6am to 6pm during the GP
    week-end.

My recommendation is that you stay in a normal hotel somewhere around
Monaco (Menton, Nice, Antibes) and drive to Monaco early enough to find
a good seat. That's what I do every year. I only go to the thursday
qualifications day but you could do the same on the saturday.

Watching the race is disappointing because you won't see much. Remember
this is an in-town circuit. Wherever you sit you'll only see one or two
    corners.

Hmm, If I book a room and I dont get the hairpin view is it possible to
see it from some sort of patio/resturant balcony, or will i have to buy
a seat as well. As for seeing much of the race, well the idea appealed to
me more for the convience of being very close , having somewhere
for us to change the baby, no hassles with parking the car etc ... rather
than having to travel long distances to get to the seats, then finding
out the only portaloo is 300 metres away.

I can watch more of the race back home on the video, but you miss the
    atmosphere.

.10 I can watch more of the race back home on the video, but you miss the
    .10 atmosphere.

Yes. That's basically what I do: go on Thursday and watch the race on
TV. The advantage of going on thu is that you see them all including
the prequalifiers and you get a very good feel for the cars, the
    engines, the drivers etc ...

Back to the Loews: honestly you'll need to have a room above the main
entrance and lobby in order to see the hairpin. No free terrace or
garden restaurant. Every sq ft is sold.

I don't know if you have been to Monaco but it is a very compact area.
The land being very scarce, people have built high rise buildings every
where they could. Because of this it is almost impossible to sit
somewhere and have a perfect view. In addition the ACM build
grandstands and walls that prevent you from seing the track. Wandering
in the streets is very limited. You won't be able to walk along the
'track', that's reserved to marshalls and firemen.

One possibility I'm pursuing is to work there as a marshall. I've tried
but not been succesful yet (many others have the same idea ...)

This may sound very negative but it's just reality. Hope this helps
    anyway.

Ahhh Gi'day...

Pity, I'd love to go, but it sounds like a horrible GP to visit. Just
walking the track is as close as I'll get.

One thing that all missed that can faze you if you are unprepared, is
    the noise.

Now I love the sound of the motors but at Monaco it is something else.
As Patrick mentioned, there are a lot of high rise buildings and the
blast of noise echoing around and through them is painfull....so take
some small bits of foam rubber and stuff them in your ears.

If you forget they are on sale.

I paid 700FF for Saturday grandstand seats last year - Pits are beside the
seats and the pit lane is behind the seats, so if you get seat A1 you will
see the cars coming out of the tunnel and past the harbour, turn around
and you see them coming past the finish line and pits, and haring up
the hill. Plus you get all the activity in the pits.

Year before was 650FF and the year before that was the same.
