| Thanks, Doug. How, in your opinion, would the extremely low mileage
affect the values that you quote if the vehicle was used as a trade in?
The 10K miles is verifiably true as my father-in-law has kept all the
MoT certificates. I bought his last car (another Granada, this time a
Mk I) off him 8 years ago when it had only done 25K miles in five years
from new. For him, 5K/annum was **HIGH** mileage..... ;-). The Mk I has
still only done a total of 52K miles from new. Since I just got the
redundancy package, I was looking for a cheap but well-looked after and
reliable motor and father-in-law's timing is impeccable.
|
1772.38 | Would you buy a used car...? | CHEFS::ARNOLD | | Thu Jul 09 1992 11:49 | 15 |
| Glasses has mileage tables to adjust values but these only go back to
86C plates, and for 10K miles only go back to 89F plates. The
adjustment quoted at that level adds 725 to the value, and I guess
that's as much as you could expect because whilst the mileage may be
true and proveable, the trade will have a job convincing a prospective
buyer of the truth.
I have a similar problem, a B plate Astra 2nd car which had a new
engine at 35K miles so a well re-conned body with a new engine that
albeit 3 years old has only done 10K miles. I believe it worth more to
me to run it for a long time, than selling would achieve. So your
answer must be to buy it and run it as long as the body lasts through
MOT's.

Doug, what does glasse's say about the following 2:
Ferrari F40, reg 90 1000 miles, condition supposedly good
Porsche 959, reg 89 3000 miles, condition as above.
The reason I ask is that I was reading the times yesterday (Sunday's)
and both cars were offered by some garage in London for 229,000,
quite a drop from a few years ago.

| Just re-checked it, according to the book, the "old" fiesta ran from a
Y plate to a F plate and was the XR2 not the "i".
The "i" was introduced in Sept 89 on a G plate, the price quoted was
for a car with alloys, which became standard in Sept 91.
check this 89G 35K Retail 5775 Trade 4600
90G 28K 6325 5125
90H 23K 6825 5600

So the adjustment for mileage takes yours with 40K on it back (as

The Fiasco in question is a 90 model on an H plate therefore
no alloy wheels. I would guess that the trade price you gave
of 5800 could actually be the private sale price all things
considered. Perhaps then the trade price would be about 5000
or thereabouts.

| Doug,
Many thanks for your public service....Im sure you are helping a lot of
people. At present I have a July 92 Glasses guide for a limited peroid
of time, but am aware that values of cars change greatly when the new
plate letters are issued. can you indicate (approximately) what price
changes occur around the August Sept timeframe ???
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Quoting from August and September Glasses Editorials:
August
'general downward movement of values in the area of 100 for an average
1300cc car and around 250 for a 2000cc. Hot hatch models continue to
drift in the market and remain behind book owing to dealer 'play safe'
policy. It is difficult to forecast where these models will finally
settle in the used market'
September
'further falls in used values across the whole spectrum, small cars
easing by about 75. 1400cc by 150 and 2000cc by 300. Large cars
with a macho image (sic) continue to be a problem with falls of
400/500.'

In view of the fact that Glasses Guide is protected by copyright, I
think that it would be better if this topic were to be write-locked.
I think that the service can still be given on an individual basis but
not in such a way as to make the information as public as this forum
allows.
Therefore, if you want to know values, please ask me by mail (you won't
get thru by phone!!) and I will try to continue the service.
