1763.0. "Factory-fitted air-con on 'cheaper' cars?" by SUBURB::DELANYS () Mon May 11 1992 12:03

Does anyone know which small(er) and cheap(er) cars (let's say, 5-door
hatches or 4-door saloons under around a grand on the scheme) can be
    factory-fitted with air-conditioning?

I've currently got air-con in my ZX Volcane, and the original quote was
890 (incl. ABS, which was then an option). However, apart from the
    Peugeot 106XT and higher-spec. Rover 200s, I don't know of any other
    car that fits the bill.

    Any inputs?

    Cheers,

Toyota say in their brochure that air-conditioning is an option
    on all their cars.

Don't know wether that would be factory or dealer fitted.

You can have PAS +air condition for 1418, on the 12754, rover 200 GTI,
or the cabriolet has it as standard :^)

The Suzuki Swift (at least in Gti form) can have air conditioning
    installed.

Hi,

The Hyundia Lantra CDi (Escort type saloon)has
air-conditioning as standard and is priced around 12k

The Mitsubishi Galant 2000 GLSi can have air
conditioning fitted for around 1400 pounds bringing the
price up to about 13.5 K

In France at the moment, they are offering air-conditioning as an
option on Peugeot (certain models only) for less then UKl 200 !!!

Makes you wonder just how much an air-conditioning unit costs these
days ...

Doesn't the Honda beat come with Air conditioning, although this seems a
bit pointless in a cabriolet.

Huh? Ever driven a recent Cabrio without A/C?

Well, I would've thought that if you get hot, just peel off the roof and turn
up the stereo.

Try driving a soft top car, in the summer, with the top down, in a traffic
jam ...

Open top motoring is wonderful in the spring, autumn and (with the heater ON)
winter ...

In the hight of summer, keep the top up, and A/C on ... if you have it.
1763.10RUTILE::BISHOPWhat the HELL are you talking about man!Fri Jul 24 1992 16:006
yea, that's the trouble. For people with sensitive (even if only slightly) heads
cabrio's are fun, but they offer a false sense of cooling. Take it from one who
knows, it's real easy to get caught out and end up with a little sun-stroke!

Is it generally possible to fit A/C to a used car ? How much would that
    cost ?

Yes. Lots (1100 for the Range Rover).

I assume the "yes" applies if A/C was offered on the particular model
as an option.
For some cars, it must be almost impossible to find space, or a way to
drive the pump ...

I've heard the new ZX 1.9i Volcane offers air as a dealer fit option
and part of it consumes the glove box! A real tatty implementation.

1763.15Volcane air-con DOES go in the glovebox!CMBOOT::DELANYSMon Jul 27 1992 15:2415
    Re .14...

In the Volcane, not just PART of the glovebox: ALL of it!!

I've got air-con in my Volcane, and there is no glovebox at all! Mind
you, I've got ABS and an alarm on the thing, and one look under the
bonnet tells you there's no way you could get the air-con gubbins under
    there.

Also, the fact the air-con is in the glovebox goes a long way towards
explaining why the condensation it pulls out of the atmosphere runs all
    over the passenger footwell....

I have a 1000cc Daihatsu Charade with Air/Con as standard and all the
unit is contained in the engine comparment. Also standard was power
steering. All that and still 40mpg with unleaded.

Thats what I call fitting the most into a small car.

1763.17a/c on sensibly priced cars?CMBOOT::DELANYSYour pessimism is my realismWed Jan 20 1993 13:3418
Does anyone know whether the new revised Pug 405 TD comes with a/c as an
option now? They made it standard for a while on the outgoing 405GTD,
and an option on the GRDT.

Also, are VW offering a/c on their new Golf/Vento range?

I shall be replacing my car this year, and having had a/c on my current
one, I can't imagine not having it -- it makes a world of difference to
spring-to-autumn driving, even in the UK.

I want a car with respectable performance, with a/c and ABS, for not
much more than 1000 extra on the scheme (less if possible). What
suggestions are there to fulfil those criteria?

    Cheers,

As I recall, it *is* an option, but it's expensive, and causes a delay
in delivery. My memory is hazy on it, it certainly was an option on my
GLDT, but I wasn't either prepared to wait, or rich enough to pay for
    it.

I would look closely at the Hyundai's - both the Lantra CD and the
    bigger ?Solara? have air conditioning.
