1716.2 | The original "Supercar Classics" | UPROAR::WATSONR | Dunno man... just got here myself ! | Tue Mar 10 1992 09:11 | 11 |

It USED to be "Supercar Classics" but since they went down-market, started
printing on much lower quality paper and reviewing things like the TR4s,
and changed it's name to "Supercar & Classics", it joined the rest of the
car mags, lost it's identity and I suspect, it's readership, and has
apparently ceased publication. Shame... it was good.
Ross.
Ps. Nothing intrinsically wrong with TR4s but I just can't see the term
"Supercar" applied to one.

If you want current car reviews, Fast Lane is still pretty good.
Of the glossies my favourite is Thoroughbred & Classic Cars (usually
just called Classic Cars these days). It usually has lots of articles
with often obscure classic cars and the ads are often worth a drool
on their own.
Still my regular car magazine buying is restricted to Motoring News
these days!.

Fast Lane has gone down hill the past few years.
CAR has got a lot better, its probably the best now although some
pretty boring cars creep in from time to time.
Performance Car has some good articles and godd cars, its probably a
bit better than Fast Lane if only because Clarkson writes for them.

1716.5 | Autocar & Motor gone downhill... | SUBURB::DELANYS | | Tue Mar 10 1992 14:08 | 28 |
| Autocar used to be very good, till it incorporated (i.e. killed off)
good old Motor... Now, Autocar & Motor seems to be trying to be like
"Car" was a few years ago. The same old "exclusive" stories/pics keep
appearing week after week, about the same car (which they know full
well is only the glint in someone's eye, and unlikely ever to come into
production). At least the new format is an improvement. They also test
cars to limits that are completely unapproachable on public roads --
even with a "John Lyons Performance Course graduate" on a deserted moor
in Scotland. I know that a car's behaviour at these limits is an
indication of its overall dynamic performance, but... Also, they seem
to spend disproportionate amounts of valuable editorial space on cars
like the new Bugatti, the Yamaha, the F40, etc. that few of us will
ever SEE, let alone DRIVE.
"Car" has got better recently (it actually tests cars normal people can
afford/enjoy) -- that's if you can stand the self-indulgent writing of
the likes of Setright and Bishop...
Fast Lane seems OK and balanced, though I rarely get it.
Perfomance Car seems to be the tabloid press of car mags...
What Car? is best for the 'average motorist', and at least seems to
report on cars in the language and under the conditions most normal
mortals can understand or are familiar with (perhaps I'm getting old?)

1716.6 | | LEECHS::hilton | How's it going royal ugly dudes? | Tue Mar 10 1992 14:14 | 7 |
| Yeh I get What Car only when it has a review of somethings I'm
interested in. One other good thing about What Car is a complete list
of cars available in the Uk, and also a second hand price guide.
Greg
PS Steven, any chance of a look at that Volcan review in your What Car?

1716.7 | We get 'em here, too. | TLE::LEGERLOTZ | Alan Legerlotz: Repository Engineering | Tue Mar 10 1992 14:18 | 9 |
| In the US, the "Barnes and Noble Book Store" chain carries Thoroughbred & Classic
Cars and Your Classic, amoung various other US and UK car mags.
I like T&C Cars for stories about cars that I could never afford.
When I want to come back down to earth and see something that I COULD afford, I
like Your Classic.

1716.8 | Your Classic is ok, but not as good as it was. | NEWOA::SAXBY | Is that IT?!?! | Tue Mar 10 1992 14:28 | 8 |

Your Classic USED to be called Restoring Classic Cars and was a very
good magazine then. It's still pretty good, but somehow the title
killed it a little for me and there's only so many reviews of naff '70s
cars that I can stand. I'm just waiting for the 'Allegro:The Classic
You Can Afford' article! :^)

1716.9 | Classic and Sportscar | WARNUT::RICE | Dry-weather biker | Tue Mar 10 1992 17:08 | 12 |
| For "Classics" I prefer to buy "CLASSIC & SPORTSCAR", as I like the mix
of affordable and 'supercars'.
I like "CAR" but as I already get three monthly magazines I only buy it
if there's something I particularily want to read.
Cheers,
Stevie.
PS. My other two magazines are "CARS & CAR CONVERSIONS" and "BIKE".
I've been collecting "C&CC" for years but it is more competition
(Rallying/Hillclimbing/Circuit Racing) oriented than most monthlies.

1716.10 | Would you buy that car? | PLAYER::KENNEDY_C | The same old clich | Tue Mar 10 1992 17:43 | 7 |

Re.0
A few weeks later, the same Corvette was back on the market for
16,000. Seems the Publishing Group changed hands, sold the car
for 6,500, which then passed through a few hands, each making a quick
buck, until the public was offered the car again.

| Best UK mag is "CAR", without a doubt.
'Supercar & Classics' was also up there, shame it's not around now.
'CCC' also good, if you are interested in the lower forms of motorsport.

yeh - your right. Stories of bouncing drunk "Zombies" of the bonnet at
50mph, accelaration tests, and 1st to 4th fuel economy switch on the
auto should be enough to scare anyone off!!
still - from 40,000 pounds to 6,500 in 2 years and 50K! Even with all
the horror stories. You couln't buy the bent 8 on its own for that here
- never mind with plumbing, great alloys, and that sexy bodywork!!
signed - frustrated L58 owner!
