A chattering sound could well be the splash guards and they're very
easy to check. If anything in the brakes is loose you tend to get
clunks (heavier sound).

| Hello namesake,
I think it *must* be the "thin metal splash guard", this
is commonly known as an "anti-chatter shim" that's missing, the
mechanics probably forgot to replace it when you had your brakes done.

I would have thought the 'splash guard' referred to was actually
just that, for keeping dirt/stones/water off of the back of the disc.
The anti-squeal/anti-chatter shim is something else, which certainly
may have been missed out by the mechanics doing brake work.
On brakes that I have worked on, the splash/dirt guard is normally
not touched when changing brake pads, since it is at the 'back' of
the disc, held on behind the hub etc.
As for the noise, possibly related to the brake pad change, but
just as likely to be something else.
How about track rod ends, or any suspension joints/bushings ?
Simply bouncing the vehicle is not so likely to show these up.

The same thing happened on my Santana a bit back, I was panicking like
mad, but everyone I spoke to about it told me not to worry as it wasn't
that important (I dunno if this is right though!)...the rattle that is.

| Thanks for the advice so far.
Yes, I believe the splash-guards are as .3 pointed out, and are
attached to the front 'hub' assembly behind the disc brake-pad housing.
My initial feelings are that the sprung anti'chatter'plates may have
been put back incorrectly.
By the way, Mileage (genuine) is 47,000
Will let you know after the weekend.

| Yes, it's just as I thought....the bottom anti-chatter spring wasn't in
place! In fact, it wasn't anywhere!
Have got a replacement pressed metal (not bent wire, as VW don't supply
them any more!) bottom spring, and it's a lot better, though not
perfect. At least it doesn't make the noise it was doing.
Off to the scrappy to see if I can salvage a few wire type spares for the
future . Does anyone know if the Audi's are fitted with similar wire
springs?
